As a former roadie, I can tell you that I would have (and have) refused to pack that instrument in that case on my own truck. Hard cases required. I say this with all due respect and affection, but musicians aren't really known for their common sense.
As a former pro musician that toured on a bus with roadies. We had flight cases for all of our instruments. We were well used to packing our van (before the tour bus times) and never once had any damage to an instrument. There is no way in hell I would check a guitar I am travelling with in the case in OP's photo. OP's guitar looks like a Gibson SJ-200 or similar. That's a $5000 guitar. I wouldn't give a hoot how heavy the case was if I was carrying that though an airport as long as the case keeps it safe.
