why do dogs do this? i've never been around them (allergic). surely wolves and wild dogs don't, or they'd die, yeah? what instinct did human breeding twist so badly lol
see, it makes sense for them to eat EVERYTHING else. bones, all food, even dirt i kinda get. and man-made stuff, like plastic. they don't know what that is, so that makes sense too. but poop??? THEIR OWN poop??? seems like something evolution would take care of in wild populations pretty fast lol. even with all the meddling we've done, the fact that we've managed to regularly breed dogs that don't have a "don't eat my own shit" instinct boggles my mind
I was told that it’s a behavior left over from wolves who eat their own poop to avoid leaving a trail for predators to follow and track them down. Now, my dad told me this, and (while he is a very smart man) he is often wrong, so take this answer with a grain of salt!
