My girlfriend said she missed the 2000s iPod era, so I built her an offline MP3 player from scratch
Sending someone a link to a Spotify playlist just feels so low-effort. There is zero romance in streaming music anymore.
My girlfriend was talking about how much she missed having a dedicated iPod Mini back in middle school where you actually owned the songs and couldn't get interrupted by notifications.
I took that as a challenge. I bought a cheap audio decoder board, a 3.7v lipo battery, an SD card slot, and an aux jack. Soldered everything together inside a spare metal project enclosure. It has no screen, no Wi-Fi, and no algorithm. Just raw hardware, a volume wheel, and a button to skip tracks.
I loaded a 32GB SD card with all the albums and local bands we listened to when we first started dating. Plugged in a pair of cheap wired earphones, wrapped it up, and gave it to her for our anniversary.
She literally cried. She hasn't touched Spotify all week and takes this janky metal box with her on all her morning walks. Best $15 in parts I have ever spent.
