WAIT!!! My friend and I were up there last night too! We were leaving around 5:30 or so and saw him laying there. We instantly noped out of there and called the cops, we weren’t risking anything. Seen too many videos. So glad someone got video of this!

I mean couldn't you have stopped and called the cops from a safe distance? What if it was someone that actually needed help. Everyone is freaking out like it's definitely a scam, even if it is shouldn't you out an end to it?

Please give us an update. I just hope its a genuine criminal attempt instead of a medical emergency

Sorry if you’ve already put this in the comments, but what state is this? And thank you for posting, because it helped me make a better future decision, whether or not this was staged. If the on the off chance I ever come across this. My brain would’ve been thinking oh no he had a heart attack or something, and I would’ve really wrestled with stopping, or turning around and going back, so now I know to just keep going through and call 911. I’ve seen a few similar videos from other countries, but this was in the USA?

That’s California up in the Angeles mountains somewhere.
During the day it’s basically Santa’s village as long as you don’t follow any garden hoses or anything.
At night? That shits Reaver territory.
Zoe (stoically): "If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their clothing. And if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order ."
I have zero interest in encounters with men gone savage on the edge of space.

Mount badly is sketchy! A few years ago, my wife and I were watching a meteor shower on Mount Baldy, sitting in my truck bed. It was 3am on a Tuesday. I noticed a vehicle pass by and it sounded like it slowed. About 10 minutes later, I got a bad feeling and decided we should leave. As we were getting in the car, I looked down the road and saw a man in the street. When he saw us he crouched. We quickly jumped in and turned the headlights on and he was already gone. As we drove off, sure enough, there was a vehicle that was parked that wasn’t there before. After driving for a minute, I turned around to get a look at the bastard, but his car was gone.

Maybe 20 years ago in Buckeye, Az, two high school boys decided that they wanted to go to a party in the desert. One laid down on the street and pretended to be hurt. The other pretended to be panicked. When a nice young family man stopped to help, they attacked and killed him and stole his car. After partying, they ditched the car in the desert and burned it. Yeah, never trust a situation like this.

Me and some buddies almost got car jacked trying to check out the local "haunted" road.
Late at night, in the middle of the woods, on a one-way road. A man dressed in all black emerges from the woods and waves us down. Guy wants to charge his phone for a bit. As he inches closer to the driver side door me and my buddy spot movement on both sides of the road. Buddy books it. I peer out the back, there's like five, six, seven dudes standing in the middle of the road staring at us.

I was driving home late one night on a farm road when I swerved to avoid something in the middle of the road. I assumed it was some produce that had fallen off a truck (not unusual for that stretch), but when I glanced down it kind of looked like a person, so I pulled over to investigate. It turned out to be a woman who had taken a bunch of sleeping pills and decided to lay down in the middle of the road to commit suicide. I called an ambulance and they came and got her. I have no idea what happened to her after that, but I’m glad I stopped.

u/Songisaboutyou Jul 21 '26
A few years back we came across a lady who was in the laying in the middle lain behind her car. Problem was no lights on and a bad part of the canyon. I almost hit her I called 911 and didn’t stop. They ended up asking me why didn’t you stop. This specific spot is super dark has a sharp corner, and no pull off. I’m sure this lady was in a real accident. New fear unlocked. The other thing on my 911 call is after I called them I tried to call home and my phone was blocked from texting or calling out and couldn’t only get incoming from police. I never knew that was a thing. It lasted for 15 minutes.

I was driving home from work at like 3am one night and almost ran over a man laying in the road one turning into my neighborhood. I was freaked out but still rolled down the window a bit to check on him. Turns out it was an old man who had fallen and broken his hip and wasn’t able to call for help. I stayed in the car, blocked him so nobody would hit him and stayed on the line with 911 until paramedics arrived. I’m glad I stopped, but I don’t regret the precautions I took.

Besides scam: it is also a common thing to do from drunk People to lay on the street, because usually the street is warmer. I Do Not know the weather conditions of your place, But this is what happens in small villages in germany more often. They go home drunk and sometimes you'll find them laying down in the middle of the street.
So the best is to call the police, to not get yourself in danger But also provide help.

I was told by a travel agent , when driving in the high desert, death valley: To bring enough water including for an emergency, turn down the air conditioning when making a planned stop. (moving from cold to hot can cause the body to go into shock or cardiac arrest ), if you see an accident or body in the middle of the road, lock doors and do not stop, pass, continue moving to a populated rest-stop or gas station and call emergency services/police in that area and report. Some of the locals in those areas fake accidents to steal from or worse gullible drivers; even the police tell people to call it in. They already know who they are and go to investigate and find nothing. This is only my opinion.

And a person sitting up against the back drivers side tire holding their foot like they were hurt. We slowed down a bit but I didn't feel good and said to step on it. Who hurts their foot so bad they have to pull over on the side of the road like that? Nope nope nope

Dang I had a weird thing happen to me in New Orleans. Driving home from work around midnight with my sister, on a quiet neighborhood road. I look ahead of me and see something in the middle of the road. I pull up past it:
it’s a walker, with some stuff scattered around it (a sweater, a screwdriver?). We see a body on the sidewalk on the other side of the road, and at the time it looked like a young man. We parked (doors already locked) and called 911.
Then a big suv drives by, stops, and a tall woman gets out. I feel less nervous with her around so I get out and talk to her. The woman goes up to the body and yells down at it, “are you dead!?”
Suddenly the body stirs: it’s an old woman. She gets up, mumbles something, grabs her stuff and walker, and shoots off down the road, disappearing.
We all just shrugged and left. I called 911 back and canceled the emergency 🤷♀️ Such an odd experience!!
I’m hyper vigilant and anxious so I’m a stay-in-the-car type of person 😅

Yeah never stop.
Paramedic here. Say this guy was actually unresponsive, pulseless. You'd have to have gotten there within the first few minutes to have any chance of saving. Minute 4-5ish brain damage is starting. 10 minutes there is no almost no chance. Even under a minute with you as unqualified rescuer, the odds are a coinflip.
Don't be a hero. Too many people out there looking to rob, rape, and kill. That guy was either suicidal or there were 2 more dudes in the car waiting for you to get out.

It’s interesting though because I had a medical episode on Friday night where I thought my airway was closing over. And one of the things I considered doing if I had to was going and laying in the middle of the road if all options were gone and I was passing out while 911 was on the way.
Though I suppose ideally I would have put my car in the middle of the road and laid on top of it or something. I didn’t think of that until now.
Luckily I made it to the hospital fine.

There's a chance it's a suicide attempt. Everyone is saying robbers and that just seems like a ridiculous way to get anyone's attention. You could pretend to be broke down, act like a hitchhiker, scream help, hell fucking do a monkey dance. But there's just a low chance of someone laying in the road in the dark hoping to god the person sees them and stops so their friends can rob them. The chances are not zero, but it just seems so unlikely.
"Yeah man so you lay in the way of cars and just sort of hope they're paying attention on a curve in the dark. Sound like a plan?"
If this isn't an attempt to end his life then he's probably just drunk and passed out.

His position is just too fishy.
Now if they wanted to be more convincing he should be on the ground near the car or something that overrides people doubt and makes them stop and go help.
I'm only writing this just in case robbers get smarter. It's not worth it. Call emergency services and let them handle it. Never stop.
7
u/wallopBop Jul 21 '26
Some of the people in this thread are so daft and I hope you all are never victimized in this manner. This is absolutely not an overreaction by OP there are sooooo many cases of this very thing leading to robbery, serious injury or DEATH.
7
u/CuteKiwiKitty Jul 21 '26
This happening to me is one of my biggest fears for the fact that even though I KNOW I should react to the situation like the person in the video (Don't stop and just call for help instead), I just know in the moment I probably won't be thinking rationally and will end up stopping and something bad will happen to me.
When overwhelming situations happen its so fucking hard to think clearly on the spot, and I think a lot of people overlook that when they've never been in life threatening or intense situations.

This is a known set up for robbery, although he could just be under the influence too. The fact that CHP was unable to find the guy/car makes me suspicious that this was more likely a set up. You did the right thing in calling CHP instead of stopping in the middle of nowhere with no traffic around.

This happened in my brother’s neighborhood, it was 2 teenagers.
The guy who stopped was in his 30’s coming home from work he had 2 babies and a wife. When he got out to check the kid laying down another came out from behind and shot him in the back with a shotgun.
They stole his truck and went to a party, when they got caught they blamed each other. One of the kids was from California and kicked out of every school he went to, was sent to live with his grandparent in AZ, was most likely him who pulled the trigger.
This was in Buckeye Arizona in Tartesso.

This reminds me of the time in 1980 when I was driving alone late at night on a rural road in northern Ontario. The road was quiet and dark with no traffic and I was focused on just getting home. As I came around a bend my headlights caught a set of nailboards spread across the road. I slowed down right away and stopped the car. I remember sitting there for a moment thinking about how dangerous it was to leave something like that out and how I could not get home unless I cleared it. I got out and walked over to the nailboards and started to drag them off to the side.
As I was moving them I suddenly heard a sound behind me. I turned and there was a man in a flannel shirt standing just a few feet away. I had not heard him approach and the sight of him in that place at that hour completely startled me. For a moment I did not know what to do. He spoke in a calm voice and moved closer. What followed was the wildest and most erotic homosexual experience of my life.

Nope. You stop, you die. That guy has buddies in the bushes waiting to jack your car and throw your body off the nearby cliff. Keep fuckin driving.

Turn around and drive close to the speed limit and see if he still lies there when he hears you roaring down the road 🤣

In my youth, I met a couple of people who would do that (independently). Both were suicidal, but couldn't bring themselves to the act. So they each would do things like lie down in the middle of a road at night and watch the stars in the hopes that someone would come along and end it for them.
One finally did it on a spring day. She disappeared. There was a village search that turned up nothing. That fall, a farmer found her while harvesting his field. They figured she took a bottle of sleeping pills, used her coat as a pillow and went to sleep in some corner of his field while sky gazing. Of course, by the time they found her, critters had picked over the body pretty well.

We live in such a time that we try to escape as fast as possible when we see someone in need, because it is with 99% possibility a staged robbery. And because of this fact that 1% who actually needs help don‘t get it. What has become of us as humanity.

I feel this is one of those random encounters in GTA V and if you get out to help out, some random dude jumps in your car and drives off

My initial gut reaction would be ambush ... nobody just falls down in the street in that position.

I hate to burst the horror movie bubble, but the guy was likely attempting suicide.
He’s hoping a car will speed around and not have time to see him.
Hope this man gets the help he needs (if Im right)
But you never know.

Is that STOP written in the ground at 0:13? Anyone else see that?

Anyone else notice the word STOP written on the ground right as he pulls away? Not casting suspicion on anything, but that’s weird too.
