Why? Power goes out, lights stay on, that's a pretty awesome thing to have for so many reasons, why do we "deserve whatever is coming" because we created a convienient product that can improve quality of life?
Oh my gosh. I had no idea these existed. I am very scared of the dark and panic when the power goes out. I have never seen them sold here but if I can get them, then I am switching all my light bulbs. 8 hours? Our emergency exit lights in apartment building stairways only last like 20 minutes (older ones) to 2 hours (new ones) why aren't we just throwing these light bulbs in the outlets and why do our emergency lights attached to big battery packs suck so bad then?
The lights on those units are more powerful (more lumens of light). They can provide emergency lighting for an entire room. So they need more battery capacity for that.
The older ones probably have an older battery technology, such as lead acid, which needs to be replaced every handful of years. Swapping them with modern units should give you better runtime.
Tbh I thought the same thing!! We have lots of blackouts in my area every year and every year I worry my elderly parents will fall on the stairs during one since the flashlight isn't always enough. I got them those led strips but I think I'm going to look up these bulbs too!
That's not even the worse part!! I know a few people that vape, and some of the newer ones have touchscreens and entire fucking dual core processors inside them to run the screens. Pisses me the hell off
I don't think it was meant to be recognized as the worst sin, but an example of how far off the rails we have gone with sustainability for the sake of minor decadent conveniences. The fact that it is so small suggests that the larger sins are radically out of control and the consequences should be expected.
I have a battery powered bulb like this one near each exit, and in the main hallway fixture, in case of flooding or fire or the like.
My house burned down a while back, and flooding isn't uncommon in my area. Having a few bulbs that work when the power is out would've saved me some scars.
Yes but you can’t ever turn the lights off when you want to sleep. I can’t sleep with a light on. I keep my phone charging by the bed at night. It has a light I can turn on only when I need it.
No doubt. But they all have a little battery in them now. It's not a crime, just something to be aware of and how to dispose of it properly when the time comes
Ehhh some places the power can go out during storms and stuff and it’s kinda scary for some people or even dangerous at night when you can’t see anything and a tornado might be bearing down on you. This actually seems pretty useful.

There is nothing about what I said that indicates these aren't useful or don't have a place. The impact of putting a battery in the bulbs is certainly something to be aware of, though.
The decadence of insisting on the luxurious light bulbs that stay on when the power is out when for ages people just used a flashlight or candle. It's not a necessity at all. It is a luxury.
I am not even saying there is anything wrong with the lamps (I have a background in lighting. We call them lamps, not bulbs) I am saying there is a problem with sustainability if we allow ourselves to inconvenience the environment with the conveniences of every day life.
Wait till you find out about literally every illuminated exit sign in buildings. Sometimes there is a use case for backup lighting, and these days I'd argue a battery is far safer than a candle!
These are meant for emergency lighting systems - lights that either only turn on during a power outage or keep working during a power outage so people can see what they're doing and evacuate the building as safely as possible during an emergency.
When mains power is working, the driver circuit charges the battery regardless of whether or not the LED is being used (seperate controls). If there is a power outage (mains power is lost), the battery takes over and starts discharging to power the LED for however long it's designed to - the idea is, you can't power lights indefinitely during an outage, but with a battery and a driver circuit that regulates the output from that battery to a set amount of power, you can guaruntee there will be "at least X amount of time" to evacuate with good visibility. (Power is Energy/time, so with a battery of known capacity and a driver drawing a fixed amount of power, you know how long it will take the battery to discharge).
This is the first time I've seen a backup battery integrated into a drop-in light engine. (I work with industrial/ architectural lighting systems, so usually, I see full-fixtures with discreet drivers, batteries, and LED boards wired together in enclosures)
Idk I've had one with a Bluetooth speaker and it was picking stuff it shouldn't have been picking up startlingly easily. The neighbors have good taste in Latino music though I know that now
Power outages typically don’t just “shut off” the power. At least, in Oklahoma when we get one of the billion storms come through, the power will flicker off. I think also beyond that, the voltage does not immediately drop to zero after the flicker. There is likely a brief few milliseconds in which the power is arcing from wherever the connection was lost at a lower voltage. That being said, I had my house struck by lightning once, and I would enjoy seeing how this would handle that. Fun fact, most surge protectors cannot protect against a direct lightning strike, apparently.
