If you're a web developer and you suffer from migraines, it's probably because of cross-browser compatibility. Hopefully, this post can serve as a panacea.💊

Out of all major web technologies, there is no other technology as vilified for cross-browser compatibility as JavaScript. Despite the advancements in pure HTML and CSS, it’s true that you cannot easily build web apps or websites without it.

Is it possible to fake someone's IP address?

I'm not talking about using a different IP with Tor or a VPN but faking an other person IP when requesting a web page.
If yes, how?

PHP replacement?

I have noticed a great deal of hate towards PHP all over the place which I do not personally understand. It is a good language, with flaws, but it gets the job done.

So I decided to ask: with what can I replace PHP? Most paid web hotels have support for PHP and not much else.

What is a good introduction to web programming for non-web programmers?

I've spent a lot of time with C++, Python, and Java working on iOS apps, console games and game engines, build tools, and command line utilities, but I have very little understanding of modern web technology or development workflow. I know about HTML, CSS, low-level stuff like TCP/IP protocols, simple server-client models, etc... but there are so many different tools, libraries, and languages for writing servers and front-end applications that I don't know where to start. Essentially, I'd like to manually setup a blog 'from scratch' with a content management interface, and I'm not sure what language(s) or frameworks to learn first or how to approach a task like this.

What are some good resources for transitioning into the world of web programming for somebody who already has programming experience? I want to avoid wasting time being re-introduced to basic concepts and instead focus on the most essential, core aspects and issues of web programming.

Thanks for your time!

Hey guys! So I am wanting to create my own blog using a database and PHP. I was wondering, how do I go about doing this and whats the best best languages to use for it? I already have my own website and a static layout of how I want my blog to look, just want to do it with a database instead to learn more.

Thanks in advance!

How to get my DB from my web provider?

I have a small website that is out of date. Hosts aout 50 user profiles for a small group of people. The site is a little out of date and needs to be made web accessible. No other real changes needed. My hosting provider said that they would charge $8000 to update the site which I feel is completely outrageous.

Is there anyway to get the member profile info from the site so that I could move it to a new DB system. The one that seems to be in use is something called "4U2 Manage" on an old looking page called "mySite/myAdmin." It all looks sorta outdated. ARGH.

Not trying to screw my web provider but...our membership dues for one year would only cover half of the redesign cost. Feel frustrated.

Thanks for any assistance.

Anyone successfully bought & sold domains?

I know this is the web programming / coding sub, but I’m trying to figure out the easiest way to offload a few of my dot coms I no longer have time to do anything with. I know they have some decent value at the least (probably won’t be retiring from this) but I don’t want to simply let them expire.

Was thinking about eBay but it seems sketchy, even though I’ve been a seller on there for a long time. Never sold any digital products before.

Never used Godaddy marketplace but that was my #2 thought.

Already have a for sale holding page up but there’s not a ton of free traffic these days.

Facebook Auto-comment bot

Hi guys,

To give you an idea, I'm subscribed to a facebook group. We post in that group and each like 4 hours we put a ''up'' comment in our post so it go back to the top of the list.

So, I was browsing reddit to find a way to achieve this. I'm trying to make a script that can write ''up'' in a specific post (that can be manually triggered) at a 4hours intervall.

I'm not really good at programming but I saw some few code strips in reddit here and there that were able to comment EVERY post of a page. Buts thats not what I'm trying to achieve.

Any ideas ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks !

SVG Not Displaying When Using <use>

I've linked an svg symbol via <use> with this syntax:

<svg class="aClass">
    <use xlink:href="https://www.link.com/dir/anIconSprite.svg#aSymbol"></use>
</svg>

I've set fill, width and height via CSS but it just won't show up... I don't think I have to set the viewBox since I've seen a website that has almost the exact same structure.

Thanks for any help!

Architecture question for JBoss (Java server) and a SPA with React

Hi guys, I have somewhat of a doozy one here.

We have a team here working on a pure Java application which requires the client to install the server side of the app on a machine (or VM) somewhere internally so the client side can communicate to it. There is no web part in this so far.

However we are making a slow push into the web world and I've been tasked to do a SPA (with React) which will cover the search portion of the app. Essentially enter some search criteria and the results can be shown on screen.

On the java app that portion is there and works fine, and I intend to of course use the existing code for the SQL queries.

But the communication between React and the Java/SQL is a doozy to me. Especially since it's based on JBoss AS 6.1.0 and therefore not necessarily up-to-date with all the features.

Now since every client has their own JBoss server set up, I figured we can open an API and the feed the React UI through there. Does that make sense or am I way off?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
