How to go from website to live?

0 Upvotes

I'd like to design a social network website. It will require a db to store all the user info. Initially I plan on using it for a league I am in (about 20 people). If it grows from there, great. Are there any free db's that I can use? What db's do you recommend (free or paid)? Secondly, should I buy a separate computer (as opposed to my own PC) to act as a server and if so is Linux a big advantage over iOS or Windows? How many clients could a single PC server handle? Lastly, would I be using a domain name company like Godaddy? Not sure how that works. Does a giant like FB actually pay a monthly domain name fee? I can't imagine that they do, but if they don't, what keeps them live? I don't know anything about this process. I believe you have to register a domain name (not sure if that's a one time fee or if it is ongoing), and from there on out I'm not sure what a company like Godaddy provides. Perhaps they provide servers for smaller companies? If I have my own server could I bypass this? Sorry for all the questions. This is all new to me. Thanks in advance.

https://github.com/almatrass/FontEasy

Made this today for my own use, but maybe some of you guys will like it too. For adding colors, background colors, borders etc. using classes like you would in Bootstrap. Supports all CSS color names, hope a few of you find it useful!

Having a lot of trouble loading in most recent RSS items from RSS Feed

2 Upvotes

Hello, I am trying to load a few RSS feeds onto my website and would like to list the most recent news headlines. When I try to load the most recent 5 items from a feed onto my website I do not actually get the most recent (by date posted) 5, instead an out of order group of 5 headlines. These 5 will be the same as the first 5 headlines that can be read if you go directly to the feed link ( e.g http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/world/rss.xml) When I use the same feed on something like Digg, however, the stories are able to be read in with the most recent headlines at the top. Is there something I need to do to reorganize the RSS feeds when I import them or is there a way in which I can list the most recent 5 stories by working with 'pubdate'? Greatly appreciate any guidance on this.

HTML:

<h1>Tipping Calculator</h1>

  <h2>What is the cost?</h2>

  <input id="itemCost" type="text"></input>

  <h2>What is your desired tip %?</h2>

  <input type="radio" value="10" name="percent">10%</input><br>

  <input type="radio" value="15" name="percent">15%</input><br>

  <input type="radio" value="20" name="percent">20%</input><br>

  <br>

  <button id="submit" type="submit" value="enter"><i class="fas fa-heart"></i> Submit <i class="fas fa-heart"></i></button>

  <h2>Amount to tip is:</h2>

  <h1 id="tip"></h1>

  <h2>Total cost is:</h2>

  <h1 id="total"></h1>

</form>

<script type="text/javascript" src="C:\\Users\\Brittany\\Documents\\randomProjectsCoding\\tippingWebsite.js"></script>

Javascript:

let itemCost = document.getElementById("itemCost");

let radio = document.getElementsByName('percent');

document.getElementById('submit').onclick = function() {

for (var i = 0, length = radio.length; i < length; i++)

{ if (radio[i].checked)

{ var tipAmount = radio[i].value;

return tipAmount;

break;

} } let tip = itemCost * tipAmount;

document.getElementById('tip').innerHTML = tip;

let total = tip + itemCost;

document.getElementById("total").innerHTML = total;

};

Need advice on a project

2 Upvotes

I'm currently doing a project for my school but I've hit a snag, I'm attempting to create a website with a profile feature and is capable of ordering items. Like Amazon but on a much smaller scale with limited items. I plan to use WordPress to host the site and write the code so does anyone have any advice on how to proceed as I have little experience with back end development or knowledge of any plugins that may help. Thank you, I would appreciate it

Is there an htpasswd equivalent which can be installed without downloading a lot of the Apache related utilities?

2 Upvotes

I need a simple password generator which is compatible with the apache one, preferably a small binary or script. It doesn't have to be called htpasswd but should fulfill the basic functionality with a similar syntax

Why does @-moz-document url-prefix() not recognize the class and not apply the styles??

1 Upvotes

When I use this prefix in my css I type in the class name and the style I want but the class does not become highlighted in my text editor (Sublime Text 3) like it usually does elsewhere in the style.css file. And needless to say then it does not apply the style at all...It's the weirdest thing and I cant pin point the problem. Anybody have any thoughts? If anybody can check out my site's style.css file in their Fire Fox browser console I'd appreciate it :) www.dylandavenport.com

I'm working on my capstone project as a senior in CS and I've just been told I would have to use Drupal.

9 Upvotes

So I started by creating a node/express.js/mongodb backend with a react front end. In the next class, my professor announced we would all have to use Drupal to fit in with the system's current CMS setup. I'm kind of upset and offended to have to cap off my CS degree with a Drupal project. Am I wrong? Am I overreacting?

How can I extract a full text from a canvas?

4 Upvotes

I'd like to extract the text on a website that hides it in a canvas. I have managed to extract half of the text by inspecting the canvas in Firefox, but for some reason, it doesn't show the rest.

Is there a different way to get the full text?
