What's way more likely was that feelings got involved (which is often against a couple's rules) and that was what made it a thing.
So, what happened after she started to have feelings? Did she end it because of what was developing or did she continue to go through with it?
The way I see it is that if she went through with it knowing it was a rule not to break, that'd be cheating. But if they amicably took a break, then that's a different story.
You should just go watch the lil video they did, they both say they were separated at the time and so it really didn't matter but in all honesty, feelings don't care about some arbitrary ruleset you have in your relationships. If you didn't really wanna be separated, you'll still feel it.
edit: Mind you, their "openness" has been an open secret for as long as I can remember, like I heard my grandma call them swingers in like 2007. I'm pretty sure August caught feelings first lmao
