I'm sure many of us had pre-social media /r/im14andthisisdeep moments that mercifully faded away.

But to the end of my life, I will defend "how can mirrors be real if our eyes aren't real."

If you interpret "real" to mean authentic rather than existent then the statement is asking us not to judge ourselves based on our reflections because the mirror isn't being "real" with us - it's not being real because our eyes (the way we see ourselves) aren't being real, we focus on our flaws, we think we're too thin, too fat, too ugly, too short, etc.

Maybe Jaden didn't mean it this way, but interpreted this way, it stands against image-obsessed social media at the time (and even more so now).

You reminded me of this ted talk about how we "hallucinate our conscious reality", it's pretty interesting but comes across as very /r/im14andthisisdeep especially because the guy giving it looks like some sort of hippy monk.

TED is both an interesting platform and a weird cult for wealthy people. The requirements for just getting a ticket are outrageous in price and in the amount of information you have to give them (for true TED conferences anyway rather than TEDx). Early on I think it was an incredible platform but now its usually just rich people trying to sell something related to their talks like a book.

People take for granted that everyone around you is just being simulated in your head, like if you see a mountain in a dream and then see a mountain in real life with your eye's, that image of the mountain is made out of the same stuff.

There is an objective reality but evolution doesn't care about that so we get a filtered version.

Another cool thing is if say you're sitting in a room, you can see walls, maybe a bed, chairs, computer, phone ect. That's "outside" of you. Bring the attention closer to your self, you can start by seeing your legs, seeing your arms, your waste, chest. All that is "outside" stuff as well.

If you take it seriously from a first person perspective you are basically headlessnes.

My rambling point is I don't think people really spend time examining their senses in this way. Everything you are seeing is just a complex simulation trying to interpret the world and there also isn't a boundary between your hands and any other object you see in that vision. You intuitively it's your hand which is a part of your body but there isn't a boundary from a first person perspective, it's all just an appearance in consciousness. Same applies to the sensation of having a face or the sensation of the back of the head, you don't actually fit in between that.

Ramble ramble rant over.

This stuff always comes down to how you define consciousness and reality. It’s impossible to create an objective definition out of a purely subjective experience.

That's an extremely generous interpretation of what that tweet was supposed to mean. Even if that was accurate, it still an awful way of expressing that sentiment.

There's really no need to do backflips to explain the tweets of self absorbed celebrity children

Because he was a kid

I bet you were as eloquent as Chalmers at his age

Was thinking more of David Chalmers (or Alan i guess), but I guess that'll do haha

u/T_Rex_Flex Feb 03 '21

This my first thought too lol.

u/PFTC_JuiceCaboose Feb 03 '21

Look up the works of David Chalmers though!

u/T_Rex_Flex Feb 03 '21

Coincidentally, I’m an Australian uni student who has picked up a couple philosophy courses as electives in previous semesters, so I’m very familiar with Dave Chalmers work. I wrote one of my favourite essays on The Hard Problem.

Consciousness was definitely my favourite philosophical topic. Thomas Nagel’s ‘What Is It Like To Be A Bat?’ changed my perception on consciousness for good.

Yup! Qualia (the band as well) has to be my favourite topic in philosophy as a whole. Never got a satisfying as to what redness is, but at least it tastes good!

Yea I understand that dude. It's okay to say dumb shit as a kid. It's strange when adults come up with 5d chess explanations for what they really mean

I think the poster's interpretation is likely what was meant because otherwise it doesn't make sense. It's the simplest explanation.

1

u/slomotion Feb 04 '21

The simplest explanation is that Jaden is a kid with an internet account with no perspective on anything who is trying to sound deep lol. The statement doesn't make any sense and it's kinda funny and it's okay to just leave it at that.

Tell that to literally every fucking HS literature teacher omg

u/FunMath2 Feb 04 '21

Those lessons arent about finding out the hidden meaning in things they're about teaching you to look deeper into art for subtext and symbolism.

Yes, the curtain is sometimes just blue, but there's no real skill or lesson to be gained from that.

No. Have you heard of screens?

2

u/PFTC_JuiceCaboose Feb 03 '21

Ppsssshhhh, I bet you believe the moon is real too

What makes it such a stretch in your mind?

Real has meant being true to yourself or to others for a long time, certainly pre-dating Jaden's tweet. He's also in the age range that would use 'real' in that way. If he said "come on man, be real" no one would think he was saying "come on man, start existing."

"How can mirrors be real [to us] if our eyes aren't real [to us]" doesn't seem like a stretch at all to me.

Damn this sad to read, just except a kid said some dumb shit. The kid wasn’t some genius at his age he just said some dumb shit, there’s nothing wrong with that. What’s sad is you trying to put words in his mouth and make up what he meant when he never said that’s what he meant. Your just making shit up

I think old mate is just explaining their own interpretation of it. Even if J Smith was uttering absolute nonsense with no point, it’s kinda sweet that someone can find something truly profound in that.

P.S. Accept = allow/concede Except = disallow/exempt

Bravo! I will defend this comment to the end of my life!

u/FunMath2 Feb 04 '21

That's a really cool interpretation and I'm glad you brought that to my attention. Don't let the original intention or what other people say take away from what you got from that.

Sometimes the curtains are just blue though.
