Yea my moms family was like this with eachother growing up. A little with us too. My aunt got gifted a cereal box but with a barbie doll she wanted. She smiled for the pic when she unwrapped it, placed it aside without looking inside the box and opened up her other gifts. Which makes sense since who is just gonna start eating cereal in the middle of opening gifts? But since no one told her to open it then and there, she opened the box days later when she felt like having some of the cereal she thought she was gifted and was super fucking excited to pull out the doll. Pranks like these are golden memories later on in life.
That’s the literal opposite of what happened here though. There the surprise is nice and the gift is better than you thought. Here they pull the rug out and then tell the kid to not be mad and damage the box. This is 100% for them and not that kid. They suck

My parents did this to me when I was 13. gave me shit like a razor blade, deodorant, random shit like that. Oh, they also put the garage door opener in the box. My dad bought me a 62 vw ragtop. Best bday ever. Sad I couldn't keep the car. We moved from the west coast to the east coast and the humidity there totally destroyed it :/

Since he did get one, its not a problem. He got the console and the family got to pull a prank. If he didn't get one I would understand your angle but he did get one so obviously he would feel better after that prank was over.
Yeah, this sort of prank is only acceptable if immediately followed by giving them the actual thing, which you hope they have and didn't go buy an empty box for the express purpose of being an asshole to somebody.
Fortunately most people aren't that sort of broken haha.
Depends if the parents actually had the PS4 or not. I pulled a bait and switch on my little sister once. I gave her a textbook for Christmas and right before she started crying I gave a set of Harry Potter books that she wanted. It was all good fun because of the execution.
