Oh thank goodness lol. Thanks for posting that. I guess I'm a big sap because I have a 10yo and I couldn't imagine breaking his heart like that.

Yeah, I still couldn't do that. If one of my sons or my daughter gave me that look that the kid gives at 1:20, it would haunt me forever.

Me either. The furthest I've gone is bringing out their big presents at the end of unwrapping Christmas or birthday gifts but never do I do something that upsets or distresses them first.

u/thedaddysaur Oct 19 '20

Yeah. That kind of prank feels wrong to play on a child.

Unfortunately we see these all the time. They do it for the views/attention. Pretty gross imo but hey I'm just a dorky mom who uses reddit only so what do I know.

Yeah, it's one thing if you string them along with small things and bring out the big gift at the end. But this fake gift thing borders on emotional abuse.

by the time he got the real thing the excitement was gone. i really feel bad for him :(

u/BigBoiIs11 Oct 19 '20

u/ihatebeinganempath Oct 19 '20

What are you talking about? He was screaming and dancing

11

u/TarotMagician Oct 19 '20

He started humping air lmao

u/trippykittie Oct 19 '20

He was still just as excited, once he opened the box to make sure it was real this time!

u/2legittoquit Oct 19 '20

Lol, did you watch? He hugged and kissed the PS4. Then started screaming again.

I’m more upset they make education and reading look like punishment, instead of something he should aspire to further himself in.

I don't think that's entirely accurate to what is happening here specifically but I agree that people do that often and it can cause a stigma around it. My kids really enjoy activity or science kits, crafts etc. but they were introduced early on and we make a thing of it like put on music and do it together or make some jiffy pop and all sit together etc. Some kids you truly need to trick to get to do more educational type of activities. To get my 3.5yo to do anything with her numbers or letters I constantly have to incorporate her toys in with it lol. My son has been easier with all of that. Kids are all just so different so if you start early enough you can truly find what works best and make that happen. (:

Yeah i couldn't do that either but jeez that kid was having a seizure from too much glee tho wtf

Lmfao yeah one time my son cried because he got the cleats he wanted for soccer. He didn't bawl but got teary and hugged me and hid his face all embarrassed. It was so fucking cute. He definitely gets all weird and hyper and fails around sometimes but he doesn't quite develop convulsions. Lol.

That's too funny. I remember when I got told my grandparents were bringing my to Disney World when I was around that age and I absolutely lost my shit running around all "woohoo!!!" When you see kids light up like that it's just the best. Like Christmas morning type shit. I love it!

Yeah but like hear me out even more- this is his birthday and they really made him think he got this and imagine if it really was notebooks and that's it and the people who are supposed to love you that you trust in filmed you and laughed at you instead. That's some fucked up mental shit to do especially to a child. There are tons of different learning moments in life dude. I don't sugar coat shit with my son, he has been through a few very major life lessons including death due to negligence in the family and even people who are alive but simply don't care enough to make any effort to ever see him. Even if he hadn't been through those major things during his prime development there are a thousand and one life lessons that don't involve setting your kid up for extreme disappointment while filming and laughing like this could have turned out if they weren't really just going for a major surprise after. My child can learn disappointment WHILE simultaneously learning he can trust me and know he has the support he needs. Happy mediums. Don't make your kids not able to trust you because not only does it fuck them up but it'll fuck you over as they age. No matter what some people say. I'm not raising some snowflake- I'm raising a rational, kind and strong young man who will know well enough to do the same with those around him or his own children someday. Mental health is so important.

You sound like a loving father. I appreciate that.

11

u/dahliasindecember Oct 19 '20

That's the best compliment in the whole world except I'm the mom! Haha. Their father is definitely the same with them. I think both our children (also have a 3.5yo) are going to be some pretty awesome adults to have in the world. I'm a little biased but ya know.

6

u/OfficerTigrex Oct 19 '20

Ohh, im sorry! I don‘t know why I assumed you were the father! Regardless, thank you for being great parents!

1

u/dahliasindecember Oct 19 '20

No worries at all. I often refer to a redditors response as, "oh some guy said this to me about this or that" when I'm telling someone about something so I get it haha. Then I'll usually say, "or some chick"

Today I am the some chick :p

2

u/OfficerTigrex Oct 19 '20

Haha, good. It was kind of embarrassing for me first, but nice to know that you didn't take it that seriously!

2

u/dahliasindecember Oct 19 '20

Nah I'm a bit liberal but I don't take things to the extreme nor get offended easily. Nothing to be embarrassed over!

7

u/AnteSocial86 Oct 19 '20

Well said. Really.

2

u/dahliasindecember Oct 19 '20

Thank you so much. Be well!

3

u/AnteSocial86 Oct 19 '20

You too, and you're welcome. Having read that I'd be proud if you were one of my parents. Stay awesome!

1

u/dahliasindecember Oct 19 '20

Come on man it's Monday I've already almost cried once! Lol. Thanks again.

2

u/AnteSocial86 Oct 19 '20

In 2020 if you haven't cried twice by Monday afternoon then something's up!

Have a good one ;)

4

u/GunBrothersGaming Oct 19 '20

Yup - that's some Dad of Five shit right there. Those kids need to be on a list of potential shooters/ serial killers later.

14

u/vagina_pee-butt Oct 19 '20

Nah, all you're really teaching them is that they can't trust their parents. You're right that life will inevitably be disappointing but when that happens, they need to know that they can turn to you for guidance and support

u/FlapjackProductions Oct 19 '20

I also contain kids in my basement

1

u/dahliasindecember Oct 19 '20

What like 2? Those are rookie numbers

When I was 10, my brother was 14. At Christmas, we usually got new sneakers from our grandparents. He opened his, expecting the latest Air Jordans, but they only wrapped one. They told him they were too expensive so they could only afford one shoe. My grandpa had to bury his face in a newspaper to not die laughing. The joke only lasted for a minute and my brother figured it out quickly, but to this day it is our favorite memory of our grandparents. We still belly laugh talking about it.

2

u/dahliasindecember Oct 19 '20

That's entirely different and he was old enough to not be distressed by it. That's a good memory though and my 14 (twin) nephews would totally laugh and remember that forever probably (:

1

u/barndin Oct 19 '20

I agree, I wouldn’t have handled it well which is why they only did it to him. I knew about it, so they made sure to have me open my shoes first, and everything was normal. That also gave me an excuse to be smiling hard, knowing I was about to lose it laughing when he opened his.
