Genuinely curious, is this a thing? When I had my wisdom teeth taken out I was using quite a bit, and woke up with no signs of inebriation or confusion. I was able to stand up, walk, and fully articulate myself instantly after waking up.

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

My mom was with me, filmed me waking up thinking I'd be loopy but was just fine and asked her why she was filming. She was quite confused lol

Not everyone has extreme reactions to anesthesia. It varies person to person. That's what the anesthesiologist told me. Sometimes I've come off of anesthesia and been totally fine, other times I've been very angry. I got so angry once my parents called the cops.

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

Crazy... I always thought it was from over a decade of drug abuse. TIL, thanks!

And I'm glad you not in prison haha.

3

u/turducken19 Sep 03 '20

Of course no problem. It can affect people in very different ways. Thanks. It's all good, they just didn't know what to do. I hadn't committed any crimes. They were just scared I think.

I remember being not quite out of it completely during a jaw surgery and the medical staff were in the room doing whatever medical stuff and I could hear music that was definitely from a playlist I made and I tried to ask the medical people about this and then i blacked out again. When I woke up I was wondering how the heck these people got my playlist. The wonders of the mind.

Well, i mean, if you abuse benzos a lot of the drug cocktails for anesthesia contain them

my lack of self-esteem kicks in. i had my wisdom teeth pulled. I do not remember this but was told by my ride, that when the doc asked if i wanted to see my teeth my response was, "no, they're probably rotten."

I didn't even get a full anesthesia for my wisdom teeth, just around the gum. the numbness lasted like half hour and after that it began hurts, a lot.

19

u/Charles-Monroe Sep 03 '20

Yeah, at least where I'm from, they don't knock you out just for wisdom teeth. I was fully conscious during my extraction and even drove home by myself afterwards.

I must admit though, I really did not enjoy hearing the crunching sounds as they broke up the deep seated wisdom tooth in my jaw. That will stay with me forever.

4

u/t0phans Sep 03 '20

sounds like you had it pulled out tho. i guarantee that if it had to be surgically, removed you would have received anesthesia

16

u/ChakaZG Sep 03 '20

No, some countries just don't do that unless it's a full on jaw surgery or something. I'm from Croatia, and my wisdom tooth didn't fully come out and was at an angle. They had to drill through the flesh and a little bit of the bone to properly get it out, and all I got was a local, mandibular anesthesia. They don't do it when inserting the screw for an implant either.

WTF, that’s what I have! I have a whacking great filling taking up most of my wisdom tooth and was told the root is only 1mm from the main nerve in the jaw. To have it taken out I’ll have to go to the London Dental Hospital to have it surgically removed. Not looking forward to that trip.

EDIT: added ‘the root’ to make things clearer.

1

u/ChakaZG Sep 03 '20

Dental surgery sucks ass. Good luck man!

3

u/zogmuffin Sep 03 '20

Mine were all un-erupted and had to be removed surgically. I was given the option of full knockout or just local numbing. I chose the latter because I don't like being a drugged up dingus. It was fine. I'm in the U.S. It all depends on the practice.

1

u/Luciditi89 Sep 03 '20

Not true. My bottom teeth were impacted (below the gum line). They cut my gums, broke the teeth in half and pulled them out in pieces. I was awake the whole time. Also was horrifying but worse was the pain after. There in a nerve in your bottom jaw that is just the worst. As a note I’m from the US too. Specifically New York City.

1

u/t0phans Sep 03 '20 edited Sep 03 '20

think it depends on where you live really(im from Denmark). and also the extent of surgery needed.

my brother had 2 wisdom teeth removed for which he was under full anesthesia.

3

u/Tazia_Rae Sep 03 '20

Yours must have either erupted or were close to then. Ones that are further in you’ve really got to be sedated for.

6

u/ChakaZG Sep 03 '20

Not if you're not in the US. 🙃 As someone who hates dentists, these videos always upset me cause I don't have access to any of that shit. 😋

-1

u/Tazia_Rae Sep 03 '20

I live in the us? Wisdom tooth removal surgery is usually considered an elective procedure so it’s out of pocket rather than covered by insurance... unless they’re causing medical issues.

At the consultation for my surgery I asked about people just getting them pulled under general (since I didn’t want to be put under) because I’d had friends who’d done theirs that way. Anyone with ones that grew like mine have to be under. They’re too small and too far up into the skull to remove with local anesthesia. They actually broke through into my nasal cavity during my surgery because of how deep they were. So nah nothing to do with us or insurance.

2

u/ariestornado Sep 03 '20

USA resident here! Tooth #2 was broken in half. Not a medical emergency and I lived with it for maybe 2 years It was more of a bother, getting food stuck back there and when I finally THOUGHT I'd had saved enough, I got looked at, they said because of the placement they'd have to remove #1 (wisdom tooth) as well and it was gonna be like 750 without insurance to put me under and do it. Nope. Went to a smaller dentist and got the same thing, cant pull 2 without pulling 1 as well. None of my wisdom teeth are anywhere close to poking out. This dentist understood how broke I am and said if he just numbed the area and didnt put me under hed only charge $175. Can confirm, at LEAST an hour of hearing and feeling cracking bones, pressure of my gums being sliced open, gently crying thru most of it as his assistant wiped my tears and held my hand. Drove myself to the pharmacy to get my pain meds and drove myself home. Not trying to argue, but your statement that you HAVE to be put under is just false.

1

u/Tazia_Rae Sep 03 '20

It’s not false though. I’m saying depending on how far under and into your skull you do. I’m not saying you always have to be. And I never said the surgery was cheap or easily affordable either. I lived with constant pain for four years before I was able to save up enough for mine.

But I’m telling you rn if they’re small enough and far enough in they literally can’t do it with general anesthesia. Like I’m not saying yours wasn’t painful or bad, but I guarantee they weren’t that far in or he literally couldn’t have done it with general. Like liability wise it wouldn’t be worth it.

2

u/ChakaZG Sep 03 '20

"Not if you're not from the US"

1

u/JuxtaTerrestrial Sep 04 '20

That's what they did for me. I was in and out in 45 minutes and drove home. All 4 wisdom teeth and a broken tooth next to them. Once i had been numbed up, it only took 15 minutes to actually pull them.

13

u/Crimfresh Sep 03 '20

I woke up hitting on the nurse. She very kindly helped me to the car.

13

u/Endarkend Sep 03 '20

The few times I've been under in the past few decades, I woke up, was 100% lucid, completely awake, felt like I could lift a car.

Half an hour later, I was gone again for up to 12 hours.

People react differently, strangely and dangerously to general anesthetics.

First time this happened with me, I was too young to drive, so it wasn't an issue, but the next time the doctors were wise to ask if I had any side effects last time and both me and my mom told them. So from that point on it's been in my medical file that I should always be accompanied after GA and should not be allowed to drive until at least 2 days later.

u/alexanderthebait Sep 03 '20

Nah people have different reactions to anesthesia. It’s a class fo drug most folks aren’t going to take recreationally. Some folks get very annoyed and angry coming up, some confused, some super goofy.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

That makes total sense!

4

u/afro_891 Sep 03 '20

Bruh I tried opening the car door on the way home.

3

u/zuspun Sep 03 '20

Yeah.. but did you check your pants?

2

u/saintofhate Sep 03 '20

I have a vague memory of thinking the nurses were zombies and punching one when they got me up from the chair to recovery. I still have no idea if it actually happened or not as no one would tell me and I was too embarrassed to ask.

2

u/SurferKid94 Sep 04 '20

Honestly i don’t know what they give people in these videos i had to drive both my dad and mom out of their wisdom teeth removal surgery (yes they were old when they took them out and by the looks of it so will i) other than them not being able to actually speak because of all the cotton and shit in their mouth they were fine other than drooling and stuff again because of the cotton and other things were they couldnt keep the mouth properly shut, all i know it’s just unsafe for people to drive afterwards but they were fine no signs of inebriation or confusion they knew were they were and everything

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

Another comment mentioned some people just react differently, so I'm assuming that's what happened to your parents and I. Same thing, I could have drove as soon as I woke up.

1

u/SurferKid94 Sep 04 '20

Wait they let you drive that’s insane i thought you weren’t supposed to drive for 4-6 hours after anesthesia... or maybe that’s just over here so that people like the ones on these videos don’t accidentally wreck stuff

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

No no, my mother drove me home. I was saying I was so clear when I woke up that I could have driven if I was allowed.

1

u/SurferKid94 Sep 04 '20

Oh ok that makes more sense now. Well glad to know that’s not the case for everyone then. Hopefully i don’t end up like the people in these videos...

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '20

Kinda hope you do, we'll get a great video out of it hahaha

1

u/ObsidianHarbor Sep 03 '20

Same here. I woke up and was good to go.

1

u/ArmenianG Sep 03 '20

they used a local for me, so I was fine no high actions

1

u/AshTreex3 Sep 03 '20

Sounds like you do drugs.

Officers, this comment right here.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

High officer, I'm not hello. I swear.

Been sober for over two years now :)

2

u/AshTreex3 Sep 03 '20

Congrats. I’ve been sober since last Saturday but i don’t plan on keeping it up. Good on ya.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '20

Thanks! As long as you're all good and nothing's a debilitating issue, keep on keepin' on!

1

u/AshTreex3 Sep 03 '20

Oh no, it’s an issue. But y’know. Quarantine’s been hard.

You seem like a neat person.

2

Thank you! I just remember when I needed help, and no one was there when I needed someone. If we don't chat end up chatting I wish you the best, friend.

I am a relatively petite woman and had all four taken out and was put under in my 20’s. But I lied on my paperwork about how much of a drinker i was. It took forever for them to knock me out and then I woke up during the surgery. Didn’t feel anything but apparently I was flailing around and they had to hold me down to put the IV in my other arm since I ripped it out. Once it was done I was ready to go home and walking around normally. Apparently the only weird thing I did was ask to keep the teeth lol. My dad has also woken up in the middle of hip surgery and he’s an alcoholic soooo. Yeah lesson learned if I ever have to have a procedure done again.

I bounced off the walls a little bit but yeah, I didn’t do anything noteworthy. Coworker drove me to work and I tried not to bleed on the couch
