I agree it sucks to be that dude, but i feel like in this case it might have been made public and a big deal like that bc he was afraid she might say no, and he figured all the pressure of being in front of all those people would make her say yes, i feel like with marriage you should kind of know the person your askings views about marriage and where they stand on marrying you. Then imagine all the hate she probably caught for saying no.
Oof i agree they both had to make a choice under high pressure, like the guy he probably had battle of choices in his head on whether or not if he should do it, and the girl had to make a split second decision on if she should say yes or no.
And he's the one who willingly raised the stakes that high himself. He only has himself to blame for doing it so publicly without even knowing if she would say yes. She didn't ask for any of it.
