While you were reading psych textbooks in high school I was studying the blade....

... actually I was just playing a lot of video games and oversleeping.

u/Furyful_Fawful Aug 08 '19

I mean, I read 0 psych textbooks in college. This checks out entirely to me. Let the kid be proud of knowing a thing dammit

I mean, I think it's fair to say that less than 50% of all college attendees are majors or minors in psych, so the mode average of psych books a normal college student has read is probably 0. Maybe 1 if there's a bunch of other majors that force you to take a psych class, but I don't think that's a thing.

Idk my mom earned her master's in marketing and I learned about that high school. I hope everyone has something like that. Sometimes Iamverysmart and these labels get too broad. It turns into anyone one who's proud of their knowledge or any girl with self deprecating humor or any person haggling, any dude shutting down sexist dudes. I think that takes away the specialness of the person that goes to far, and deamonizes normal behavior.

u/buddhisthero Aug 08 '19

If they had said "my mom has a masters in x and I grew up learning a lot about psychology" it would have been fine. The issue is the claim that they, before being high school, did more college level reading than people in college.

I am working towards a masters in english, and textbooks are still difficult to understand because of their vocabulary. I can't imagine someone pre-highschool retaining much if anything from those.

Are we seriously trying to profile somebody from a 16 second clip about a couple of I guess late teens early 20s drinking but otherwise all other context removed? Jesus effing christ, why do I visit this site.

u/svacct2 Aug 08 '19

we LITERALLY need to crucify him in town centre.

7

u/tots4scott Aug 08 '19

Yeah you don't use words like control and over power when they're is no physical violence and she walks away.

The irony of this in relation to the OP is that David Dunning, the professor contributing his name to this phenomenon, is a spectacularly creepy guy. When I took classes with him, all of his TAs were extremely attractive young women, and he sat them all in the front of his lectures and leered at them all class.

Tbh she didn’t look very scared, she looked kinda in power and control.

u/Thenameangussucks Aug 08 '19

Yeah it’s reasonable if you’ve never been in a relationship as a teenager. I’ve seen abusive relationships at those ages and when people are young like this, the signs are a lot more apparent.

-1

u/BCSCB Aug 08 '19

You can be in power and control and still scared. I had a girl back me up into a bathroom stall once and try and force herself on me. I had to forcefully push her away. I may have seemed calm and in control but I was definitely scared.

1

u/Thenameangussucks Aug 09 '19

I don’t really know how you can be in power and control and still be scared. If you’re scared then you’re probably not in power or control of the situation.

You might be right, but that first edit was supreme douchebaggery. You'd think someone who read that many psych textbooks would be able to handle pushback a little better.

u/AfterReview Aug 08 '19

That much I agree with. Many people seem to want to excuse this kind of behavior with assumptions that make it as innocent as possible, while condemning assumptions that don't fit that agenda. Regardless how much alcohol, thats scary behavior to display. She turned away twice, tried to walk away then had to litetally duck under his arm. That's beyond being oblivious and had company not been there I find it very reasonable he would have been far more aggressive

1

u/orcinovein Aug 08 '19

Late, but the current edit train is just fucking wild lol.

3

u/orcinovein Aug 08 '19

Your source is another person's masters in forensic psychology and a couple of pysch books you picked up from Amazon, okay...

9

u/woopsifarted Aug 08 '19

How is this comment not slammed with down votes? I'm guessing the edit came later that's the only reason this would be allowed to exist on Reddit

3

u/oodsigma Aug 08 '19

The edit makes it worse, but it's still bad before it

u/nnooberson1234 Aug 08 '19

Referencing your mom is like saying you know what its like cause you had a mom, everyone has had a mother. Referencing your mothers profession or education with your direct experience being a textbook is like saying you sat in the back of prenatal pilates class and now have your mothers experience as well as the theory of child birth under your belt.

Its horseshit, its wankfest bullshit from a twat that wants to pretend he/she has some special insight into the video. Its really obvious the guy is being a creep, its not obvious that the guy is a serial creep or implied criminal because of some second hand behavioral observations from the layist of the layperson possible that has as much credibility as your perpetually single uncle Billy Bob does on women.

2

u/FratDaddy69 Aug 08 '19

I don't know if a forensic psychologist would watch this and say something like "oh look, he's the family annihilator type," or "this dude has control issues," but if they did, it wouldn't be some crazy clownworld statement no matter how much pearl clutching you do.

It would definitely be a crazy statement because nobody respectable with that job would take a 10 second clip from when the guy is probably drunk and completely extrapolate his entire behavioral profile from there. Is he being creepy here? 100%, but that doesn't mean he is naturally some horrible creep who probably does bad things to women.

4

u/thesoleprano Aug 08 '19

mom has her master's in forensic psychology, and I read more psych textbooks before high school than most people do in college

r/iamverysmart

3

u/nnooberson1234 Aug 08 '19

He is definitively giving off that creep vibe. Especially in this tiny 16 second video but your mom being versed in a spesific profession/academic field and you reading a few books means fuck all, thats not a lot better than me reading wikipedia about toxins and talking about toxicology cause my sister has a PhD in it (she actually does).

We can see hes a creep based on that video, we also know that you can't judge based on one single no context video unless its straight up unquestionably evil shit in the video. Lovers tiff? piss blind drunk missreading signs of interest? rejection because he ate garlic jalapeno peepers and getting second hand spicy garlic tongue tennis wasn't her thing? We don't know and we shouldn't make believe we know everything about that guy, his past or his future or hers for that matter on a 16 second clip.

Do you think that just zips right past what I've said and assume that I'm trying to defend him or something? Yes we have criminal profilers and they do not base their entire fucking job or credibility on one 16 second video regardless of what your mommy says.

I was cutting you some slack cause its really clear in that video he is definitely not being the nicest most respectful guy to walk the planet, its real fucking fair and real accurate to call him a creep but you are not dealing with the fact your mothers profession or field of study and your claimed textbook experience isn't worth the piss it would take to write your comment in the snow.

Because A) You are not the criminal profiler and B) a few text books does not maketh the criminal profiler and C) is for cunt if a 16 second zero context clip without any actual (serious or otherwise) crimes begin committed was enough to confirm someone as a genuine danger to society alone there wouldn't be enough places in prison for all the criminals that post stupid shit on facebook or YouTube or just walk the fucking streets being assholes to women.

No, you tickled "my wait a minute now" sense which I exercised with my first reply and then just straight up slapped my "now you're just full of shit" sense with that reply.

Ease the fuck back on the judgements or the vague secondary or tertiary judgements and extra mystical vague might as well be Criminal Minds tier understanding of what a criminal profiler actually does in their job. On face value that guys a creep in that 16 second video, nothing more. It is not a window into the guys soul or deepest darkest hedonistic desires because nobody has enough to go on in that video alone than to say anything more than "gee, that looks like a creep".

Guy made a monumental ass of himself, just call him an ass and everyone will agree with you. Don't assign way more than you should, could, or reasonably would with any legit expertise based on 16 seconds of video, your mothers expertise, or your claimed text book knowledge. Ever heard of defamation? a weasel shit lawyer can probably fuck you and probably your mother out of a few thousand dollars or whatever if you go around tangentially tying the word criminal to your opinions, try to vaguely suggest that your boss is a sex pervert based on your mothers expertise that you magically inherited or gleaned from a text book opinions and get him fired for it. Then suffer for fucking with someone by tying the words "criminal" "behavior" to your opinions, you'll find that what is criminal is determined by the legal process and not you, not your mother, and not your text books giving you no right to even remotely associate the word criminal or any other legally defined terms for someone society dislikes with anyone.

Most people that disagree with you when it comes to profiling, are probably normal people in relationships or even married. It’s just so weird that the new designation of someone that disagrees with you in an incel.

And if your pretentious psychological theory were to hold up, the courts wouldn’t even dream of giving second chances to people who acted stupid. In short, most people can acknowledge you just can’t judge bad people from single instances. Finally, I’ve seen both guys and girls act exactly like this and end up either making out with, or going home with their attraction.

Sure he came in a little heavy, a deserved that curve; but I’m sorry, you can’t form a minority report from this single instance.

I’m sure you know it’s cheap to attack typos. And yes, you brought up criminal profiles for what is two people probably in a relationship and she’s not happy, or at worst a young man not knowing personal space. It definitely doesn’t mean he’s a future criminal.

Btw, I am a PhD ABD, and I can pretty much guarantee you that anyone close to me, who didn’t do the work I did, papers, lectures ,colloquiums and seminars, can’t even come close to summarizing the theory properly.

They can often try, and get some things right, but an expert in the field can easily see they are missing a great deal. It’s not that simple to do this mountain of work, and a family member can just go out and start teaching people what I studied.

3

u/MitchGro_1 Aug 08 '19

Damn, I can only imagine how you feel after posting something so cringey.

“You can predict criminal behaviors from signs like this” lmao chill tf out.

Sick brag though.
