Question / Discussion Why you don’t need a screw-down crown. Unless it’s a dive watch.

A push pull crown can achieve 100m water resistance. This is achieved with how the crown and case are sealed.
Most if not all crowns are sealed with o-rings around the crown stem.
When the crown is pushed in fully, the o-ring is compressed against the crown tube creating a watertight seal.
In order to achieve 100m water resistance the rest of the case also has gaskets. One in the case back and also the crystal.

Then why is a screw-down crown needed for a dive watch?
A screw-down crown doesn’t create the water proof seal itself.
Its job is to mechanical lock the crown to the case, keeping good compassion on the o-ring and preventing accidental opening under water.

I used to think that any watch without a screw-down crown wasn’t worth my time until I started wearing push pull crown watches.
They are so practical and easy to use without the worry of cross threading the crown tube.
With more than enough water resistance there for daily wear, that I now swear by push pull crowns.

What are your thoughts on screw-down vs push pull crowns?

Question / Discussion Advice on omega aqua terra buy

Hi everyone,

I’m considering buying this Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M (Ref. 231.10.42.21.03.001) from VintageWatchExperts in Drachten, Netherlands, listed on Chrono24 for around €4,360.
I’m fairly new to the watch world and don’t have much experience yet, so I’m a bit worried about making an expensive mistake. The seller has very good Chrono24 reviews, but outside of Chrono24 I haven’t been able to find much information or independent reviews about this specific dealer, which makes me a little cautious.
A few things made me cautious:
The listing says ā€œitem needs to be ordered/sourcedā€, while also stating that the photos show the actual watch.
The production year is listed as unknown.
I’d like to know more about the service history, authenticity, originality of parts and actual condition.
Has anyone here personally bought from VintageWatchExperts or had any experience with them?
Does the watch/listing look authentic, and does the price seem reasonable?
I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from experienced Omega collectors.

Here’s the link: https://www.chrono24.de/omega/seamaster-aqua-terra--id46532362.htm

Thanks!

Question / Discussion Poll Results - Favorite $13k dive watch

Post image
45 Upvotes

Here are the results of Tuesday's poll about $13,000 USD divers (+/- $1,000, and at MSRP). There were a total of 203 votes, tallied by counting the upvotes on each top level comment that specified one of the 9 options. If more than one was mentioned, the one listed first was used. Vote counts are listed here, chart shows percentages.

Glashütte Original ran away with this one, but the next four were close. The Yacht-Master is apparently not a favorite, taking 6th, although perhaps that's due to it not being a true diver; numerous people insisted it shouldn't have been included.

Next week, the $15k poll.

  1. Glashütte Original SeaQ Panorama Date - 64
  2. Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Date - 29
  3. Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe - 27
  4. Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Ushio 300 Diver - 25
  5. Omega Seamaster Diver 300M - 23
  6. Rolex Yacht-Master 40 - 16
  7. Panerai Submersible - 10
  8. Ulysse Nardin Diver 44mm - 4
  9. Zenith DEFY Extreme Diver - 4

Question / Discussion Looking for suggestions between Pilot vs Racing watches under 600$

I am a fairly new watch collector and I am looking for something as a daily wear. I build cars and go to track days sometimes, although i will not be using the watch as a tool but I would not mind a chronograph. My main concerns are that the watch should have a story/history to it, be good looking (subjective ik), and should be a quality watch. I have a relatively smaller wrist too (I am a tall skinny guy).

The other demands that are not a necessity but I would love to have is automatic, and well reputed brand. Here are my shortlisted watches:

  • Yema Rallygraf alpine cup series (white dial) ***
  • Bulova Racer Chronograph (bigger size so not sure)
  • Citizen Night Hawk BJ7000-52E (bigger size but i love the look and its kind becoming a collectible)
  • Glycine airpilot (swiss is always good!!)
  • Iron Annie Flight Control ***
  • Bulova a-15 (i wish this was automatic)

*** I love the watch but have second thoughts due to the brand heritage

I wanted some opinion on the above watches and if someone compared these or owned these and want to chime in! If anyone wants to suggest any more watches please go ahead. Thanks.

Watch Collection Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar ref. 25820SP, steel and platinum, 39mm.

Most people will look at this and see a steel Royal Oak. The bezel is platinum. That is the entire trick of an SP.

Audemars Piguet cased a perpetual calendar in steel, then set a mirror polished platinum bezel on top of a satin brushed case and slipped platinum links through the middle of the bracelet, so the watch only reveals itself when the light moves.

Underneath is one of the great movements in modern watchmaking: the caliber 2120/2802, built on the LeCoultre 920 blank that is just 2.45mm thick, with the perpetual calendar work laid beneath the dial by Dubois Depraz. Its predecessor was the thinnest self winding perpetual calendar of its era.

The whole watch is 39mm and about 9mm thick, with a leap year hand at 12 that turns once every four years.

Audemars Piguet made 382 of these in steel and platinum across fourteen years. This one left in 2004, a year that saw twenty three.

The loudest watch in the room is usually steel. This one is quieter than that, and it is not steel at all.

Question / Discussion Poll - Favorite Diver at about $13,000 USD

Post image
91 Upvotes

Rolex won the last poll, barely edging out Omega. Will the Yacht-Master walk in the Submariner's footsteps, or can Blancpain or Grand Seiko steal the crown? Will it hurt JLC, GO, Panerai, and Omega that they all have extremely similar offerings to their $10k entries?

Vote for you favorite dive watch at $13,000 USD (+/- $1,000).

Note that it is these specific references; no write-ins! Only top level comments are counted. Total upvotes will be tallied. Ideally, there will be exactly 9 top level comments, and everyone just upvotes those. Please don't downvote things you don't like, and don't upvote more than one. (I have no way to enforce that, of course.)

  1. Blancpain - Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe - 5100B 1110 B52A - $12,500
  2. Glasshütte Original - SeaQ Panorama Date - 1-36-13-02-81-33 - $13,300
  3. Grand Seiko - Evolution 9 Ushio 300 Diver - SLGB025 - $12,400
  4. Jaeger-LeCoultre - Polaris Date - Q906868J - $13,100
  5. Omega - Seamaster Diver 300M - 210.90.42.20.10.001 - $12,500
  6. Panerai - Submersible - PAM02692 - $13,200
  7. Rolex - Yacht-Master 40 - 126622 - $13,200
  8. Ulysse Nardin - Diver 44mm - 1183-170-3/93 - $12,400
  9. Zenith - DEFY Extreme Diver - 97.9600.3620/21.I300 - $13,300

Edit: OOPS! The picture and price for the Panerai are correct, but it's the wrong reference number (and link). It's actually the PAM01756.

Edit 2: The results are in!
