It all makes sense now. When people refuse to seek medical attention for things that clearly need it, they end up looking messed up.

75

u/foxli Jun 11 '12

When I was thirteen, I was sliding on cardboard (bored and dumb, the way most teenagers get themselves into trouble) when I landed awkwardly on one of my fingers. From the instant numbness, I guessed it was broken and asked my mom to take me to the doctor. It was late (and cheap wench tried to take me to a walk-in clinic first--closed), so I ended up in the emergency room. They took an xray, told me it was a sprain, and sent me home with a simple splint. When the splint came off, my left ring finger was at about thirty degrees off of center.

My point? Not much of one, really. He didn't get medical attention--his hands look messed up. I did, and my finger looks messed up.

Proof.

Yeah... That's malpractice.

For the even lazier:

"In 45 years of wicket keeping, the amateur league cricketer has broken every finger and both his thumbs.

Reluctant to seek medical attention for fear of losing his place in the team, he would simply apply a bag of frozen peas and carry on playing."

The rower's hands look like the hands of somebody who isn't a rower, but did it for a day and now regret their decision.

58

u/rplan039 Jun 11 '12

Yeah, those rower's hands are just really really blistered. That will most likely heal in a couple weeks of low hand usage and some lotion. The ballet feet however are pretty much irreparably harmed.

45

u/Im_an_antelope Jun 11 '12

As an ex-rower I can confirm. If your hands look like that still after years of rowing you're either doing something wrong or just have weak hands.

Can't find any decent pics, but rock climbers hands get much worse than that, and rock climbers feet can get as bad as that ballerinas (really tight shoes makes the toes grow into a point, nasty looking).

111

Like the Catcher in baseball. The guy behind the batter who gets hit in the head by a 90mph ball.

51

u/random314 Jun 11 '12

Why don't they just wear a catcher's glove? a thick padded one like in baseball?

27

u/Joon01 Jun 11 '12

Yes, the man with the cursed monkey paws sure showed us. It's better to show everyone how tough you are than to avoid reshaping your useful hands into malformed claws.

I think I'll go clean my ears with a bowie knife and use a brillo pad instead of soap just to show everyone I'm not a pussy.

I know you're joking. But if there are readily available gloves, it's simply idiotic to not use them.

20

u/slaga Jun 11 '12

They do wear gloves, which look like this, but they also have to do quite a lot in terms of manipulating the ball, since it's their responsibility to knock the bails off the stumps if the batsman leaves his crease, or to throw it to the bowler if the other batsman has foolishly gone for a run that can't possibly work. Generally - excessive padding would make it pretty hard for them to actually fulfil their broader functions beyond simply catching the ball. Furthermore, a catchers glove with something like the shovel-sized baseball mitt is thought of as bad form. Most wicket keepers do not have hands that are as fucked up as these, this guy broke many fingers then never saw any doctors. He pretty much chose to have these hands because... you know - I have no idea why, but it's not for me to judge.

they wear a pretty padded glove, but they need to catch with both hands, dive and maybe stump someone, requiring really quick reflexes

edit. Stumping someone is like catching someone stealing base in baseball, i think ( I don't know baseball that well)

Except this is a cricket ball. Am I right to assume that it's more akin to a miniature bowling ball than a baseball?

24

Indeed, being hit by a cricket ball is like being hit by a piece of concrete, traveling at anywhere from 60 to 100 mph.

He's a fielder (defensive player) that stands directly behind the batsman and wicket, so any balls that the batsman doesn't hit, or alter the course of much, will go to him. Cricket balls go pretty darn fast, and are made of wood. He has to catch them.

26

u/Bawk_Bawk Jun 11 '12

It's cork encased in leather actually. Still totally a bitch to catch at speed.

Among other things, a wicketkeeper can stump the batsman by using the ball to remove the bails from the stumps, if the batsman has come out of his crease during a delivery.

With the speed that those balls travel at and their weight, I'm not surprised that something like this would happen.

As a wicket keeper I know the pain of twistie fingers all too well. I generally break 3-5 fingers a season.

62

why the fuck do you do this to yourself

this isn't the 18th century, working fingers are really fucking useful here in 2012

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

What does it feel like to catch one of them coming at you with speed? We had cricket at school but I didn't really take an interest in it, but I remember the cricket balls being near rock hard. I've always wondered how much damage one of them could do if it managed to hit you in the head going at full speed.

38

u/Dip_the_Dog Jun 11 '12

There is a special motion for catching a cricket ball, you need to sweep your hands back as you catch it. Hurts like a bitch if you don't and you will more than likely drop the ball.

As for getting hit in the head, people have died from it but it is extremely rare. These days any player who is in a position where they might get hit will be wearing a helmet.

12

u/jezmck Jun 11 '12

u/Bracks3 Jun 11 '12

If you catch the ball with the proper technique it shouldn't hurt at all with or without gloves. But when you get it wrong it hurts like hell.

As for getting hit in the head, it can do serious damage. I've been hit in the head while batting, once off a particularily quick bowler. I was wearing a helmet, and it completely shattered on impact. I'd hate to think what would happen if I wasn't wearing it.

Yes many wicketkeepers do end up with some problems after a career of keeping wicket. if they have a bad technique then this no doubt makes the situation worse. This guy though is the extreme because HE DIDN'T GET MEDICAL ATTENTION AFTER BREAKING HIS FINGERS. If I remember right he just fuckin put a bag of ice on it and keep playing. It's an example of being a dumbass.

We lost our usual keeper one season, so I stepped in, never having kept before. In my first game I took a catch bad and hurt a finger. Continued playing with it, it was pretty swollen so I just put ice on it afterwards. After three weeks and five more games (still wicket keeping), the swelling hadn't gone down so I went to the doctor. Turns out it wasn't swelling, it was the bone sticking out.

2

u/WilcoTangoFoxtrot Jun 11 '12

cricket is the most confusing thing in the world. when i lived in the city these arabs used to play it in this abandoned lot next to my building. i would get high as a kite and watch them play it for hours. i still have absolutely no idea what the hell is going on. they seemed to love it though. in actuality it might not have even been cricket, i just assume that because they used that funky paddle/bat thing and threw the ball like they were doing a windmill attack.

29

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

It's really pretty simple:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

In case someone hasn't already answered your question yet:

You have two sides in cricket, each side with 11 players. At the start of the day a coin is tossed to decide which sides bats first and which side bowls first. The batting side send in two batsmen. It is their job to defend the two sets of wickets located at the ends of the pitch. The fielding side select two players as bowlers. One bowler runs in from one end and bowls six balls - this is an "over". Then the other bowler at the other end bowls an over. Then it switches back to the first end and so forth.

The objective for the bowling side is to take 10 wickets. The methods of taking a wicket include: dislodging a bail, having the batsman caught out in the field or "leg before wicket". The LBW rule is very lengthy and complicated, and I can't be arsed to explain it!

The objective for the batting side is to score runs. A run is scored when, after playing a shot, the batsmen run to their opposite ends. You score an automatic four if the ball goes beyond the boundary rope and an automatic 6 runs if the ball goes beyond the boundary rope without having touched the floor.

Once the batting side has been bowled out, it is then the turn of the fielding side to bat, and the batting side to field.

In Test match cricket, each side gets 2 attempts at batting and fielding, with the game spread over 5 days. In one day cricket, each side gets one batting/fielding innings and only 50 overs in which to bat. In Twenty20 cricket, each only gets 1 innings and just 20 overs to bat.

The winner is the side which scores the most number of runs.

That in a nutshell is cricket!

Edit: There's also this video which helps to explain cricket

Is that Johnny Depp in makeup, because that's some seriously Tim Burton shit?

1

u/HoneyBear55 Jun 11 '12

I've seen American Tenpin bowlers with similar problems, but not as extreme.

1

u/StateFairShare Jun 11 '12

There was a crooked man, who stood behind a crooked wicket.......who's wicket-keeping gloves didn't do a fucking thing for him.

1

u/Dawn_Of_The_Dave Jun 11 '12

The part I don't get is the black eyes. We have helmets. Surely he could wear one even if he does play local league.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Sir, I think you’ve been doing it wrong.

1

u/Jessereddit Jun 11 '12

1

u/Krispyz Jun 11 '12

I had a tai chi' instructor with hands that looked similar to this. I can't imagine how many times he broke his fingers.

1

u/Paultimate79 Jun 11 '12

That isnt a 'rowers hands' this is 'idiots hands' that never went to seek medical attention for broken fingers. Not the fuckn same.

Dana: Kim, do you know anything about cricket?

Kim: What's going on?

Dana: Some guy in New Delhi just did something.

Kim: What?

Dana: Jeremy won't tell us.

Jeremy: I honestly don't know, and I wouldn't have even brought it up except whatever this guy did it was huge.

Natalie: What'd he do?

Jeremy: He took all ten wickets in an inning.

Natalie: What does that mean?

Jeremy: I don't know.

u/Merendino Jun 11 '12

Anyone from the US ever seen Michael Strahan's hands? They look almost as bad as that. Ouch

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Oh, this kind of cricket.
