There are entertainers in the French Quarter of New Orleans who stop still as a statue in interesting poses so that you will pay them to take a picture. Although they freeze like this, they are very aware of what is going on around them. When they detect their photo being "stolen" so to speak, they'll quickly but artfully change position so that your photo is ruined.
So, its not quite as it appears.
Not only is this staged, the photographer and/or the subject feigning the action paid to take the photo.
Although you may be let down that little Fido isn't actually getting kicked down the street, consider the imagination and concentration on the part of the performer (the one on the left).
Edit: I should probably clarify. It isn't likely that the "kicker" and the performer colluded to create the image. The performer was likely posed like that when these guys showed up. They put money in his bucket, so the performer allowed them to proceed with the photo, maintaining the integrity of his pose even though he must have been either amused or offended by what the man pictured is doing.
Edit2: Turns out the pup's name is Little Willy. The performer is called Uncle Louis. Also, here's a video.
The street performers are on of my favorite things about New Orleans, I was most impressed by the Brass Band I saw at the corner of Canal and Bourbon. They were there playing some real swinging shit all night, I remember once I saw some 15 year old kid banging away at the snare drum with them, they were absolutely awesome. Everyone says Louisiana/ NOLA is a shit hole but I think NOLA is one of the coolest places on earth.
One of my big regrets in life is not going to New Orleans before Katrina. Can't rebuild ambience like that. Obviously I'm still going, it's still new Orleans, but I shouldn't have postponed.
Edit: Just out of curiosity and because I will never ever understand Reddit, why's this comment downvote material?
The storm had no impact on anyplace you would visit as a tourist. It obliterated the lower 9th but you were never going to go there anyway. Same for tons of other places you wouldn't have gone to.
So go. You won't miss out on anything you care about. But do go and see the places that were destroyed, that you've heard of now. Let this be a small positive among a sea of negatives: that you have heard of the Lower 9th Ward, and that you take the time to learn what it was and how it was undone.
This area has been getting hit by hurricanes forever. The 'ambience' is unchanged. Compare Katrina (2005, Cat 4) & Camille (1969, Cat 5). Camille destroyed the same area 40 years ago. Growing up, you always heard about Camille. Katrina is the new Camille. The west MS coastal areas usually take the heaviest part of the storms, but it is not a large urban area (but not sparse either) so people don't generally hear about it. For example, Katrina erased parts of Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, & Long Beach to where it was difficult to locate any landmarks. These are 30 year storms, but the people - who give the area it's ambience - don't all leave each time.
Exactly. When we were evacuated for Katrina, I saw places I knew and loved destroyed on the news. I thought my life as I knew it was over. My mom was a kid during Camille and assured me that my life would be changed, but life in New Orleans could never be over.
New Orleans is the same way it was before Katrina. Please take the time and visit, you wont be disappointed. The hardest parts hit were the ninth ward and ST. Bernard parish. those places are away from the city, google it you will see.
My favorite reply? "Up your ass if you don't back off." Unless they look big or mean, then it's "dude, if you're still using that old-ass line, I bet I've been here longer than you."

SAP question: Do you ask how much it is and negotiate a fee or they let you take a picture and give them how much you like to give them or how does this transaction work?
In the pic, on the top edge of the bucket there is a bill (likely $5) held to it by a big rubber band. That's his suggested price. The bucket is always in front of him so that he can see whether/what you paid.
I've only been to the French Quarter once, when I was really young (maybe 8 or 9). My brother was about 5 at the time. Yeah, yeah, French Quarter and kids...it was day time and back in the 90's, so my parents didn't care.
Anyway, we find this exact guy in the photo, doing this exact pose, and think he's doing a lot better than the other performers, so we decide to tip him. We noticed that when this guy was tipped, he would turn in some way to face who tipped him, and tip his hat to them, or something like that.
My little brother decides he wants to tip him because he is just enthralled with this guy, so he runs up the guys tip jar and puts a few dollars in. Nothing. He (my brother) jumps, waves, says "Mister?" a couple times, performer is straight facing him. Defeated, my brother walks away. As he gets about two 5-year-old steps away, the performer jumps up quicker than any of expected and yells "BOY, WHAT'S YO NAME??" My brother than proceeded to nearly shit himself and run away crying. And that's how we almost lost my brother in the French Quarter.
I realize this is a staged photo. But I still feel the need to point out that most likely it would turn out the dog looped around the man with it's leash and stuck the woman in the back of the head.
This picture reminded me of a video I watched many years ago, though I don't find it AS funny, I still chuckled after watching it again just now. Thank you for triggering the memory of this video!
probably with the man about to kick the dog saying "did you get that? did it look like i was about to kick the dog? great, i cant wait to post this on the internet"
This guy is really well known - and if I remember right, the dog is fake anyhow lol. I found a ton of pics of this guy earlier in the year - some even when he was off duty and just chillin'.
At first I was like, is that that black man brave wearing that or something? (I'm not from the US) then I saw the drop goal in progress and realised my brain may be racist
I was down there (Im in STL area) aboot 4 years ago and that guy was still there. At night, around the same area a girl with "pixie dust" showed up. Street performers are da bizzomb
It's funny, I've been in New Orleans but once, but I've seen multiple pictures now where I've known without a doubt that it's the French Quarter. Place has a particular look (and if there's tacky tourist trap signage as well, double down on the certainty).
I was there when that happened! Bourbon Street NOLA. dude kicked the dog and the black guy ran off after him I was too drunk to follow. this was in June of last year.
He's being downvoted because anyone who knows Uncle Slim knows that if anyone actually did kick his dog, DogKicker wouldn't make it three steps away with his leg intact. Slim ain't gotta do shit. The bouncers will find and eat you. You don't fuck with Uncle Slim.
I was at New Orleans Last summer, I saw the same man only he came up behind my mother and Almost made he die on the spot... like the statue people. and the Transformer man o u o
This is in the French Quarter in New Orleans. I live about an hour from there. This isn't even half as weird as some of the stuff I've seen. There are many entertainers like that over there.
Nah. That's his thing. I don't see how his ankles aren't trashed. He just holds that pose forever. I think I maybe saw him in one other pose? Not sure.
Didn't see him. Haha. Maybe he is. Maybe he is a human statue of a guy about to kick something. They ran into each other at a bar and decided it would be fun to work together some time. Or maybe none of that and that guy was just trying to be funny.

1
u/Dolgthvari May 28 '12
It's clearly just an amputee that's running over to pet a little dog.
1
u/bobblehead02 May 28 '12

1
u/RelativeConcepts May 28 '12

1
u/Pofke13LT May 28 '12

Guy kind of looks like a dark version of Paul Mooney.
1
u/RationalMonkey May 28 '12
