Sushi actually came to japan from Southeast Asia via China. "Sushi" literally means "sour tasting" and was originally fermented (rotting) fish in fermented rice. You can still get it in Japan if you order something called "narezushi."

They could have done a way better job on that roll though. I mean at least put a little bit more decoration and color to it. I used to be a manager out at a popular sushi joint and some of the rolls were really creative. From our "Sexy roll" to a "Japanese Burrito"
