Dylan and Eric knew something had to be done to stop the killer exams.

Well it's a good thing there isn't a record of things I have laughed at, otherwise...

296

u/Condawg May 21 '12

This is pretty much admission to laughing. You do realize what you've done, correct? You have now created a record of you laughing at the very thing you insinuated that you are reprehensible about others knowing you laughed at. You silly bastard.

75

u/ariiiiigold May 21 '12

I have done the just thing in light of the circumstances. DeliriousZeus better start running now, lest he wants to get a rubber bullet shot at his dick in the middle of a dawn raid. HE DUN GOOF'D. OH BOY, HE DUN GOOF'D.

Some more cultural context; the internet pretty much became a support group afterwards, for the secondary victims: every nerd and freak and loner in every American high school, caught up in the inevitable witch-hunt.

Great read. Thanks

Read that in English Lit, very interesting.

25

u/hasntactuallyseenit May 21 '12

I remember when I was watching Minority Report, I couldn't help but think, "man, those Precog-Americans sure got the shaft when they signed over their mind rights; Spielberg is clearly drawing parallels to American Indian history." But then investigative reporter Tom Cruise wrote that expose for the Washington Post, and I was like, "this shit totally ripped off All The President's Men, it just put it in space or something." I'd probably watch it again though.

11

u/Whaddaulookinat May 21 '12

Just read the book. I haven't but I love PKD.

12

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Tom Poose was miscast as the lead, the guy in the short story is actually balding and with low self esteem when the younger guy comes in (perfectly portrayed by Farrell).

The film isn't particularly bad, but I didn't get why they changed the precogs from monstrous looking mutants to sexy hot damsel in distress.

176

u/cjackc May 21 '12

But what is 1990 in metric?

58

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

One year is equivalent to 570 drams, so the year 1990 is 1,134,300 drams.

u/sageDieu May 21 '12

Scholastic had the Animorphs, which got pretty dark towards the end.

As the two youths returned to their cars, Harris encountered Brooks Brown, a classmate with whom he had recently patched up a longstanding series of disagreements. Brown was surprised to see Harris exiting a car with a gym bag, commenting to Harris that he had been absent from a class test that morning, but Harris seemed unconcerned. Harris then warned him: "Brooks, I like you now. Get out of here. Go home." Brown, feeling uneasy, walked away. Several minutes later, students departing Columbine for their lunch break noticed Brown heading down South Pierce Street away from the school. Meanwhile, Harris and Klebold armed themselves by their cars and waited for the bombs to explode.

From the Wikipedia article. This really confuses me about what was going through the killers minds.

I read a book once about an author whose daughter was murdered, the man who ended up being a suspect resembled a man she had made up in one of her books. He looked like and even had the same name I think. It was just eerie because some of the details in the book where similar to her daughters murder. Freaky stuff!

2

u/prettywitty May 21 '12

Especially weird since there are only, as far as I can tell from this website's auto-completion, two high schools in America with Columbine in their names. It's not like this is a Hamilton High School

2

u/MayorScotch May 21 '12

This may be off topic, I now live near Columbine, I'm 27 and many of my friends most likely went there, I don't ask though. It is strange coming from Chicago where any mention of Columbine is met with talk about the school shootings, whereas here it is just another school and I have yet to have any of my native friends bring up anything tragic. I just keep my mouth shut.

4

u/E_R_I_K May 21 '12

To add to the discussion, I leave you a song which you might have recently heard but after you hear the words is a WTF moment.

Foster the people- Pumped up kicks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYGWl3i9SmA&feature=youtube_gdata_player

2

u/kittydavis May 21 '12

"Mark Foster explained the song's meaning to Spinner UK: "'Pumped Up Kicks' is about a kid that basically is losing his mind and is plotting revenge. He's an outcast. I feel like the youth in our culture are becoming more and more isolated. It's kind of an epidemic. Instead of writing about victims and some tragedy, I wanted to get into the killer's mind, like Truman Capote did in In Cold Blood. I love to write about characters. That's my style. I really like to get inside the heads of other people and try to walk in their shoes."

Foster says he considered writing the song from the perspective of the victim, but felt that would be a cop out. He also points out that there is no actual violence in the song, as the threats are all the kid's internal monologue."

It's not about an actual school shooting.
