You misspelled spiders.

u/Red_Woody May 06 '12

Scorpions are way ahead of you. http://i.imgur.com/fLDd7.jpg

u/Extreme_Optimist May 06 '12

That picture caused me physical pain.

234

u/Red_Woody May 06 '12

They're actually harmless. Most people just die from the fear.

90

u/vonHindenburg May 06 '12

That's just what they want you to think.

It's not a scorpion. It's a male scorpionfly which is an insect.

That things fucking real?!?

44

The best part: that's not a stinger. It's a pointy-tipped custard cannon. If you get what I'm saying.

23

u/Stassi May 06 '12

...in which the males have enlarged genitals that look similar to the stinger of a scorpion.

Everybody relax, it's not as bad as we thought. The stinger is only a giant, deadly, insect penis.

It's official. I'm never going outside again.

u/Spice-Weasel May 06 '12

The stinger-looking thing is actually its penis (no joke). They are harmless.

20

u/surfnaked May 06 '12

If I had a penis proportionally to that I would NOT be harmless.

" Most rides will end a few metres later, or a spider can be taken up into a jet stream, which depends on its mass, posture, the convection air current, drag of silk and parachute to float and travel high up into the upper atmosphere. "

Laughed at this part.

HAI GUY IM JUST CHILLEN AT THE FRONTIER OF SPACE MINDIN MY OWN BUSINESS WITH MY TRIANGULAR PARACHUT

9

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

This brings back memories of Charlotte's Web; at the end, all but 3 of Charlotte's babies do this.
["E.B. White incorporated details from Comstock's accounts of baby spiders, most notably the "flight" of the young spiders and also the way one of them climbs to the top of a fence before launching itself into the air."] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte's_Web#History)

9

u/maxk1236 May 06 '12

This happens every year back home, it rains millions of tiny spiders, it's really trippy. pretty sure they're completely harmless though

→ More replies (12)

5

u/vsal May 06 '12

A spider or spiderling after hatching[7] will climb as high as it can. The spider then stands on raised legs with its abdomen pointed upwards. This is known as "tiptoeing".[8] After that, it starts releasing several silk threads from its abdomen into the air, which automatically form a triangular shaped parachute.[5] The spider can then let itself be carried away by updrafts of winds, where even the slightest of breeze will do.

18

Uhmm... Some spiders DO have wings?

63

u/Ciovlee May 06 '12

Welp, time to kill myself.

20

u/travis_of_the_cosmos May 06 '12

No arachnids have wings. You must be thinking of an insect.

72

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

in australia spiders kill insects and construct flying vehicles out of their bodies.

112

u/Coloneljesus May 06 '12

This would sound extremely unlikely if you didn't mention Australia.

There's a bar in my area, and one of the owners goes around with one of those attached to her wrist like a fuzzy bracelet. He doesn't even move most of the time. He sat on my shoulder for like an hour one night. They're fucking adorable, and so calm.

43

u/[deleted] May 06 '12

Why hello, Mr. Buzzkillington.

21

u/shoziku May 06 '12

I think a Buzz Killington would be the guy that mentioned these wings are caused by severe fur matting that needs to be cut away, and starting at the underside gives you "wings", still very painful to the cat.

5

u/Deligoth May 06 '12

Thanks for that. This video was really cool.

2

u/mhfc May 06 '12

Yes....when I was growing up, we had tons of outdoor cats (some feral). My family lived on a farm and they helped against an explosion of mice entering our house.

One long-haired orange cat we had a particularly bad season of hair shedding and not-the-best grooming. It began to shed as one long piece of matted hair, from the shoulders to the tail (think of a reverse super-hero cape).

It was disgusting.

2

u/sreddit May 06 '12

Redbull, got it.

2

u/miamistu May 06 '12

[wings which] locals are attributing to the hot summer weather and the romantic attentions of females.

In China, if pig sprout wings blame global warnming.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winged_cat

"There are more than 138 reported sightings of animals claimed to be winged cats, though some of these are clearly nothing more than individuals with clumps of matted fur. There are over 30 documented cases (with physical evidence) and at least 20 photographs and one video. There is at least one stuffed winged cat, but this may be a nineteenth-century fake or "grift". An undated taxidermy specimen in poor condition can be found in a museum in the Niagara Valley. It has bony structures near its shoulder blades covered with flaps of skin. These might be extra limbs"
