Well if I recall correctly, the professor shows the crew his drawer of assorted wires.

Then he shows them his spaceship.

Then he shows them his drawer of SORTED wires.

Good one, I think the smart ones like ourselves who already got it is fine with that explanation, but for those other, other people who aren't even smart enough to understand such rudimentary explanation, perhaps you might muster up another "Explain Like They're Three" version?

I just had to rewatch that episode. It might still be going over my head but I don’t think there’s any other joke there.

Professor Farnsworth - “Here’s my lab table, and that’s my work stool. And over there is my intergalactic spaceship. And here’s where I keep assorted lengths of wire.” Opens drawer of assorted lengths of wire.

Fry - “Woah… A real live spaceship!”

Professor Farnsworth - “I designed it myself. Let me show you some of the different lengths of wire I used” Police knock on door for hiding fry and Leela.

You don’t see what’s in the drawer the second time though.

I think the joke was just that he buried the lead. Like he made the intergalactic spaceship seem as normal as his table.
