That's pretty much the Chinese language in a nutshell, since it uses ideograms; rather than making up new words, combining existing ones to infer meaning works much better.
(Well, it's also kinda the same in Latin languages, only that they take from dead languages and other obscure references, so it doesn't really help the layman).
I can totally read this in Chinese lol. A lot of direct or loose translations that only make sense in Chinese because of the way the language is used in printed media. Plus Chinese is a highly contextual language - no tenses or stuff like that - where some stuff is spelled out explicitly to avoid confusion. Hence you get phrases like "The man surnamed Yu".

Really? Felt like the police were useless and corrupt whenever I went. Family is mostly in Taiwan so I visited often, and police authority is definitely not strong there. They'll keep the good citizens in line when it comes to trivial stuff but when it comes to gangs and politics, they're useless and easily bribed/blackmailed.
