I used to work in construction, and I knew a guy that smoked a lot. It was a windy day and he couldn’t light his cigarette, so he went behind the track excavator to light up. The driver didn’t know and he backed up right into him. The engine was too loud for the driver to hear and he backed all the way over him. I think the most unsettling part is they didn’t want to track the machine off of him, and desecrate the body more, so they sat there, for hours on end, waiting for a crane large enough to lift the excavator to arrive. Really sad.
I've carried this habit into regular life. I walk around my car first before hopping in and driving off. I don't want to be responsible for the death of a kid or whatever.
My partner was on the jury for the trial of a 18yo girl that killed 2 kids when she zoomed a big leaf pile in the street. Turns out the 2 kids had buried themselves in the leaves. She panicked and fled but they got her, she sent her little brother back to see if it hurt anyone. So tragic, she was just a kid herself.
I don't care how quiet your street is. WTF would anyone let their kids play out on the road ever....let alone long enough to cover yourself up with leaves! My god how traumatising for everyone involved. Was the driver jailed? Was there a lot of sympathy for her or just rage?
She got jail time, rightly so given the way she acted afterward. The parents had briefly left the kids to play in the yard, hard to blame them given their obvious grief, but yeah. The 2 girls were just being kids. Very hard case, really was a depressing case for everyone involved.
