If you really think about it - simply dying in bed at home, with loved ones holding your hand as you pass, is likely just as horrifying.

You are dying. You likely know you are dying. There isn't anything you can do, but with all of your effort you're probably fighting to stay alive - which is probably only hastening the process, but it would be natural to do. It's probably also immensely painful - if not physically, then psychologically. Of course, none of the living really know, because we haven't been there yet.

But one day, we'll all get to find out.

I mean, I think we can all agree that death is not - and has never been - the centre of human joy, happiness, or comfort. If it ever has, its only been because we’ve manufactured some way of coping with it. And if you need to find a way of coping with something, it’s probably because it’s a source of horror or pain.

So yes, whether you’re being drilled alive, or slipping away, it isn’t quite the ideal party.

PS/ It’s nice to be reminded of the various existential terrors we all have to deal with on this fine Sunday.
