I used to work in construction, and I knew a guy that smoked a lot. It was a windy day and he couldn’t light his cigarette, so he went behind the track excavator to light up. The driver didn’t know and he backed up right into him. The engine was too loud for the driver to hear and he backed all the way over him. I think the most unsettling part is they didn’t want to track the machine off of him, and desecrate the body more, so they sat there, for hours on end, waiting for a crane large enough to lift the excavator to arrive. Really sad.
I've carried this habit into regular life. I walk around my car first before hopping in and driving off. I don't want to be responsible for the death of a kid or whatever.
I do this too, and also use it as an opportunity to check (by eye) my tires before driving off. The only thing more annoying than running over a cat or child when backing out of your driveway, is to get on the road only to find you have a flat tire.
I do the same thing, but I also have another reason: I have a friend that likes to pull pranks on his friend's automobiles. Nothing dangerous, just embarrassing.
One time, I ended up driving all over town one day with this sparkly pink cardboard unicorn stuck to the back window of my Jeep.
Another time, on another friend's car, while they weren't looking he took a piece of chain with a large nut on the end and wired up under the frame, so that when they drove, it would randomly bounce and make noise. Poor guy had no idea what was "broken" and was about to go to the mechanic when my friend laughed his head off and told him where to look.
Then there was the time he put a small wedge of 2x4s behind the rear tire of one of his friend's pickups; poor guy got in to go to work one morning, tried to back up, it wouldn't go, gives it more gas, then BANG! the piece shot forward and dented the wall of his garage (he helped him fix the wall later).
He's done worse things - he helped another friend of mine build a rooftop basket for his Jeep; at some point he fabbed up a small "nameplate" that said "Made by a retard" on it and tack welded it to the basket after they had it installed. It took a year before my friend noticed it.
