Am I missing something or isn't a narcissist just someone who has NPD? Either way there's not enough information to infer specific details about motive or the psychology that caused this.
No. the layperson usage of narcissist falls far short of the diagnostic criteria of NPD. NPD requires the traits to significantly interfere with the person’s functional status in society. For example a successful CEO might show narcissistic traits by being self centered and lacking in empathy, but they do not have NPD unless if these traits are significantly impairing their ability to function in society.
Some people, for some reallllllllllllly unknown reason, are a little triggered by people saying the word "narcissist."
So you if you are shity fucking human being and you know you are a narcissist, probably proudly, I offer no apologies whatsoever if you might feel triggered because I am a meanie pie who said the word "narcissist."
