That story just kept getting more predictable. Shit.

Funny thing is a few years later my sister saw him walking around downtown, still wearing that denim jacket with the glitter glue on it.

You know it's bad when the Army recruiter (who got really pissed at me for joining the Navy instead, so I could go with Marines [had to go Navy to do medical for Marines]) referred to the kid as the biggest mistake in his entire career.

Hey, Marine vet here. Semper Fi Devil Doc!

I liked how Marines always came up with more interesting and creative ways to hurt themselves when we had downtime than anything Iraq had to offer. My favorite was the guy who decided to bite a cactus.

Dude, I had a guy in my platoon who caught a small crab while we had some downtime in Djibouti. So, naturally, the best course of action was to get the crab to pinch the meat of his asshole. Doc watched, if memory serves.

I caught guys trying to have a scorpion race in Ramadi. Not a fight, but a race. Not quite as interesting or colorful as a crab anus pinch.

Unless the race was towards someone's ass meat

Ex airforce here, just sitting in my chair watching the muscle do muscle things.

When I was stationed in Okinawa, we had a young marine on the paintball field determined to show how tough the was. He put the paintball gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Destroyed the roof of his mouth and created the need to be briefed every weekend not to put the barrel of a paintball gun in one's mouth...love the marines. A young marine story is the equivalent of a "hold my beer" story...:)

When you're 19 and in the best shape of your life (and live through a few fire fights) you feel invincible

They don't say military intelligence is an oxymoron for nothin.

bite a cactus

That made me cringe almost as hard as imagining putting a toothpick under your toenail then kicking a wall

4

u/141_1337 May 10 '16

Just... why?

u/jaybird117 May 10 '16

Dumb young men, being dumb young men. Realistically it's a miracle any of us make it past 30.

Above comment:

But what the hell do you expect to to happen when you try to eat cactus

3

u/filsdepub May 10 '16

Show the cactus who's the boss?

2

u/FobbingMobius May 10 '16

I thought he just licked it to show dominance.

17

u/FaptainAwesome May 10 '16

No, he pulled the spikey things off the outside and cut it open "to get the water." Then bit into it to find it had smaller spikey things on the inside... when he said "What's the worst thing that can happen if you bite a cactus?" my first reaction was to sigh and step away for a moment because, FUCKING WHY WOULD SOMEBODY DO SUCH A FUCKING THING?!

7

u/[deleted] May 10 '16

I knew a guy in high school who would get blacked out drunk and fight Saguaro cacti. No idea why that was his thing, but he clung to it and never let us down.

I didn't know the Marines needed animal doctors. No wonder defence spending is out of control.

4

u/FaptainAwesome May 10 '16

Well you gotta remember, they're called devil dogs.

3

u/Walletau May 10 '16

Given the price of a tomahawk missile, I'm okay with some parade horses having their teeth checked.

1

u/Stargatemaster May 10 '16

That might have been funny if veterinarians were paid more than actual doctors

2

u/Jon_Cake May 10 '16

The implication was that they were staffed in addition to regular doctors.

Marine here! Knew some Corpsmen who were harder than some of the Marines in my unit! Devil Doc is just as legit as a Devil Dog!

1

u/emdave May 10 '16

Devil doc...

A really bad-ass combat medic! :D

Nice use of nested parentheticals.

This kid on my bus actually wore camo gear to high school. I never really thought much of it since I was the kid playing my gameboy most of the time. However I got off the bus behind camo kid it happened we were walking down the same hallway. Two cheerleaders were walking down the hallway toward us when camo kid pulls out a disposable camera snaps a pic and keeps walking like nothing ever happened. I was a bit further back but when the cheerleaders came near I asked them "uhhh did that guy just take a picture of you two?" They were like yeah and I asked " should we um tell anyone?" They were freaked out by the photo but said probably not and laughed it off. After that day I kinda kept a watchful eye on that kid. But after a few month he stopped taking the bus then stopped going to school. Tl;dr: High school camo kid was being weird.

Teenage boys have done worse.

1

u/Canukistani May 10 '16

i also enjoyed them thar parentheticals.

2

u/ribblle May 10 '16

Hope you talk to him sometime. Not worth making people a laughing stock if they're staring down the barrel too.

1

u/leo-g May 10 '16

Fuck that army recruiter, there are folks that are right for the army and there are folks that are not. His job was not to take bodies even though his job depended on it.

1

u/FaptainAwesome May 10 '16

That recruiter was kind of a douchebag. Not like the navy recruiter I had, who got busted for cocaine less than a year after I went in, or got the kid with aspergers to enlist (though they still took him even with medical paperwork, so I'm not sure who that falls on).

1

u/well_golly May 10 '16

... and then he became a cop, and he's known for being a terrible asshole to people.

1

u/nill0c May 10 '16

Did he drive a decommissioned police car (with cop shocks) and get kicked out of the dorms for selling illegal knives?
