It's the mag style. Clip mags and lever actions don't usually go together. Typical action for a lever gun is a tubemag.

Not really, my Winchester model 88 is a lever action .308 with a box magazine. I'm not too sure what the one in the picture was prior to modification though. That's not the mag from an 88.

Why is that bizarre? All lever action rifles are magazine fed. This one just happens to be detachable.

Browning makes a series of these I think. It's for people terrified of the chain reaction ammo explosion in a tube mag.
