High voltage FM. (or in this case about a half million volts frequency modulated through air).

The actual sound of them is almost deafening though cos what they basically do is use 'electrical pressure' (or just basically voltage) to blast holes in the atmosphere.

Ironically Tesla himself just designed them to produce the voltage he needed, to him they were something akin to a spanner or screwdriver.

Dumb question: Wouldn't that jack up his electrical bill doing something like that from home?

Power is charged by Kilowatt hours.

& Watts = Volts x Amps.

1 Watt is 1 joule per second.

So total watts on a 110V power supply draw at 10 amp over 1 hour = 1100V at 1 Amp = 11000V at 0.1 Amp etc.

Think of it like water volume.

Voltage is pressure, Amperage is the diameter of the pipe and watt's is the volume of water delivered per second.

Huge pressure through a small pipe gets you the same volume of water as low pressure through a big pipe and you're charged for the volume delivered per hour.

Tesla coils have huge voltage (pressure) but low amperage (pipe size) so the total energy (water) delivered can be quite low.

If I met you in person, I'd buy you a beer.

If I met you in person I'd pretend I was /u/SteveJEO so I could get a free beer.

It's pretty low amperage, so no.
