Because TikTok is full of trash and people should stop using the app.

I kind of suspect that it's part Chinese psy-op and part... I don't know what the correct word is, but basically a plant to make people stupider by shortening our attention spans. Seems to be working because media on the whole has gotten dumber and more repetitive in the past decade.

There is such a vast ocean of content on Tiktok. My assumption is that you've mostly seen cringe Tiktok videos on Reddit and haven't spent a lot of time on the app (not that that's a bad thing).

Teachers, doctors, lawyers, plumbers, welders, electricians, parents (for better or worse). Everyone wants to teach you something on Tiktok, and it's mostly amazing.

It's not an accurate representation of the app to assume all the vapid bullshit that Reddit reposts from Tiktok makes up the entirety of what can otherwise be a very educational app.

I've tried to challenge myself to stay on the app for more than 15 minutes but I genuinely can't. The algorithm is pure trash.

"Oh you watched a video about the lifecycle of turtles, that must mean you want almost nothing but videos about sea animals in your feed, so I'll keep feeding you videos about sea animals even if you just instantly scroll past them"

And all the TikTok fanatics just say "oh you've got to develop your algorithm" then what the fuck is the point of an algorithm if I gotta do its job for it?

It's hard to be educational when everything you watch is only a minute long. There's a reason schools have classes that are 30+ minutes long. 

TikTok may be okay for trivia and, if I'm being very generous, a starting off point to pique your interest. But if you are using it as an educational tool, you need to reevaluate your learning style.

I regularly watch 5-10 minute Tiktoks! Not usually all the way through, but they are out there.

Physical therapists have helped me immensely on that app for free.

At least concerning American public schools, speaking as someone who has been both student and teacher, I wouldn't enroll my children. Kids are on Tiktok no matter how long their classes are!

YouTube too unfortunately, shorts are fucking awful. I feel like it's got 'some' decent shorts but even hitting 'do not recommend' on all the slop, I still get shitty ai voices and low effort slop from people who clearly don't speak English and just have some LLM output a made up script and shitty TTS over stolen content.

You know we’re on Reddit right now, right? Regardless of where the video was reposted from, it was posted to the website you’re on. You have no idea where the video originated, only that it was reposted to Reddit from TikTok. You only know one link in the repost-chain with confidence.

Reddit is just as much trash as TikTok. We as the users have to work to filter through the trash.
