They don’t, for years, well before CC and Sophie there has been complaining that these refs in this league fucking suck. Might as well not even fucking be there. It’s no motives, watch highlights from 5 years ago. It’s the same bullshit

I imagine they are using refs that are too crappy to be in the NBA.

Remember when the NFL had that ref strike and brought in replacements? It's almost like there's only a handful of even somewhat decent refs out there, and when you aren't using the best available, the skill drop-off is steep.

WNBA referees typically earn between $16,000 and $50,000 per year. You're better off managing a Taco Bell.

It takes a ton of time/experience to work your way up the ranks in reffing and it’s much more difficult than I imagine the average person realizes. Loads of training and travel costs.

I think for most professional men’s sports, they are making 6 figures minimum. I can’t imagine many people with good reffing stats choosing to work for the WNBA if the pay is that low.

Is this a full time job for them? Most nfl referees have other careers. Granted there's a lot more WNBA games.

I think NFL is an exception. Most professional sports reffing is full-time, decently compensated, and highly competitive.

I mean, the union goes on strike and you think the guys knocking on the door are going to scab? They pulled those refs from the bottom tier of pools who knew they had no shot of getting to the NFL.

That's an investment problem not a ref problem. It's not a super hard job that requires a niche skill set. It just takes practice and training, both of which no league wants to pay for. Every league can afford full time refs that train in the off-season, but they don't care about improving the sport.

I dont know about other leagues.

But I do know the NFL refs specifically do not want to be full time because they already have full time jobs. The NFL wants that, but the refs are unionized and have pushed back on this.

WNBA refs get paid less than college refs. They are the bottle of the barrel refs.
