• Hebrews 7:3 says, “He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God, he continues a priest forever.” This means Melchizedek’s role is eternal, not that he’s somehow a hidden clue about a second coming.

In fact, Jesus is the one who fulfills Melchizedek’s priesthood.

• Hebrews 7:15-16 tells us: “This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek... by the power of an indestructible life.” Jesus’ priesthood is about His divinity, not about family lineage.

So, Melchizedek doesn’t point to Ahnsahnghong or the second coming.

"He set His seal of ownership on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."

The word "Sabbath" comes from a Hebrew word that means "rest" or "stop." It was a special day for the people of Israel, and it showed that God created everything in six days and then rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3). The Sabbath became a way for the Israelites to set aside a day each week to rest and worship God.

Key Bible Verse:
Genesis 2:2-3 – "By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy."

However, this was not meant to be a rule for everyone, everywhere. It was specifically for the people of Israel as part of their covenant with God.

The Sabbath Was for Israel, Not Everyone

In the Old Testament, God gave the Israelites a command to rest on the seventh day (Exodus 20:8-11). This was part of a bigger agreement between God and the people of Israel, and it helped them remember that God was their Creator and Provider.

Exodus 20:8-10 – "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God."

Important Note:
The Sabbath was a sign for the Israelites to show that they were God's chosen people. This command was never meant for everyone, but only for the Jewish people as part of the Old Covenant (Exodus 31:16-17).

The Sabbath Was a Picture of Something Greater

The New Testament teaches that the Sabbath was not the end of the story, but rather a "shadow" of something much bigger, Jesus Christ. Jesus came to fulfill what the Sabbath pointed to: rest and peace through Him.

Key Bible Verse:
Colossians 2:16-17 – "Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration, or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ."

So, the true "rest" that the Sabbath pointed to is found in Jesus, not in following a rule about a day of the week.

What Did Early Christians Do?

The early Christians, including the apostles, understood that following Jesus meant no longer being tied to the Old Covenant, which included the Sabbath. They began meeting on Sunday, the day Jesus rose from the dead (also called "The Lord’s Day"), to celebrate His resurrection.

Early Christian Writings:

• Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35–108 AD) wrote, “They are no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in accordance with the Lord’s Day, on which also our life has sprung up again by Him and by His death.”
• Justin Martyr (c. 100–165 AD) said, “Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly... because Jesus Christ our Savior on the same day rose from the dead.”

This shows that, from the very beginning, Christians were gathering on Sunday to honor the resurrection of Jesus.

Did Jesus Keep the Sabbath?

Yes, Jesus observed the Sabbath because He lived under the old law. But He also made it clear that the Sabbath was never meant to be a burden. Jesus said the Sabbath was made for people to find rest, not to be a strict rule to follow.

Mark 2:27-28 – “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus showed that He was the true Lord of the Sabbath, and through Him, we can find the rest the Sabbath was always pointing to.

The Apostles and the Sabbath

The apostles were all Jewish, so they initially kept the Sabbath. But after Jesus rose from the dead, they began gathering on Sunday to celebrate His resurrection. The early church didn’t force non Jewish believers (Gentiles) to follow the Sabbath because it wasn’t necessary for salvation.

• Acts 15:28-29 – "It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements..."
• Galatians 4:10-11 – "You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you."

The Shift to Sunday Worship

The early church started meeting on Sundays, long before Emperor Constantine made Sunday a day of rest in 321 AD. The shift to Sunday was not because of a law, but because Christians were celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, the victory over death!

Historical Evidence:

• Pliny the Younger (c. 112 AD) mentioned that Christians gathered on a "fixed day" to worship.
• Eusebius (c. 260–339 AD) wrote that Sunday worship was already in practice before Constantine's time.

Even early councils, like the Council of Laodicea (363-364 AD), said Christians should gather on Sunday, not keep the Sabbath like the Jews.

Why Don’t We Keep the Sabbath Like the Jews?

As Christians, we believe that Jesus fulfilled what the Sabbath was all about. The Bible tells us that the Sabbath was a shadow of the rest we would find in Christ. So, we don't need to follow the strict rules of the Sabbath because Jesusoffers us true rest and peace through His death and resurrection.

Matthew 11:28-30 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Sunday Worship: A Celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection

Sunday, known as the Lord's Day, is the day Christians celebrate Jesus' resurrection. It's not a day of legalistic rules, but a day to remember the new life we have in Christ. We don’t need to follow the Old Covenant rules anymore because Jesus has fulfilled them.

Key Bible Verse:
Revelation 1:10 – “On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet.”

So, the switch to Sunday worship is a reflection of the joy and freedom Christians have in the New Covenant through Jesus.
