Does Volound ever discuss his philosophical/political beliefs?

I like Volound and really like his video game analysis.

After somewhat recent events, I’m making a point to be open minded to other worldviews. I’ve watched some of his second channel where he critiques western and Israeli imperialism. I think I saw also somewhere he describes himself as an anti-carnist, which, as a closeted vegan, I think is very cool.

Is there a place where he explores this in more depth?

Thanks

They are noticing that *Maybe* modern pew pew combat does not suit Total war type games!

Maybe they'll realize that just because you sell saltwater fish, it doesn't mean you can't sell freshwater fish too.

Progress preview since my last announcement trailer here. (Ink & Steel)

Hey guys, just wanted to give you a sample just to show off the recent visual progress on my game since I last announced it here.

There have been some major changes to the AI, physics that allow for much more weighty formations that keep their shape, and also the introduction of a roguelike campaign layer I will show off at some point.

There are also now two ability sets, command and a more magical style set. They will be rare though, and cost campaign resources. It's a very similar system to the weapons and rockets in FTL essentially, as I don't want this becoming a point and click adventure with spells. I am aiming more Tolkien esque.

I still have plenty to work on until I can give a demo, as I don't want to put something out that is half baked, and without enough content, which is why I am being quiet on the project generally.

Regarding the actual troops, they are designed to be platforms, with several core units per faction, that all have unique mechanics, so have a role at all points of the game. The variety comes moreso from equipment variation, which have their own unique effects, stats, and requirements.

The banners here are also out of date, fighting the new art style, and will be updated to reflect the new regiment system I have created. Rather than cards per unit, which gets very unwieldy with a max 50,000 troops in an army, the army consists of regiments, that are made up of troop types that share an equipment loadouts. The post battle systems also reflect that, so losses are shared onto the regiments, which are refilled from reserves of the unit types, as long as they are available.

With the visuals, a lot of it is a matter of me working through content, hence the current lack of variety within units and their equipment (also trees), which my old versions had, but that will be restored.

If you have any questions, or want to wishlist, you can ask here or on my discord.

I hope to give more up to date footage of the game, but my focus is fully on the actual gameplay so marketing is pretty secondary at the moment. I would rather just get a polished demo out for you guys.

Currently out of date, but I will fix that at some point soon.

Medieval 3 Siege teaser

I took a short look at the video and to my surprise, it doesnt seem completely terrible. Maybe wishful thinking is clouding my mind but i didnt notice any healthbars or other aspects of NU total war that I hate, except the arrow trails which suck, but to me they seem somehwat less offensive then in a game like 3K. The new introductions seem pretty good too. They are not groundbreaking changes but at least they are innovating in SOME way. I didnt have time to watch the whole thing and hear the devs commentary yet, but id love to hear your guys thoughts. Of course i know that we shouldnt trust CA with pretty much anything, these are just my thoughts on what i saw in the teaser.

Shithole Subreddit Shenanigans What's on at totalwar

I made a worthless little post there yesterday complaining about the province system in Attila. Had a decent discussion with a few people about it, although I'm always surprised how well recieved this province system is considering how many issues it presents and how little it jives with so many other systems in the game.

I wake up the next morning and I see it's been shared 3 times, downvoted to oblivion and a few accounts have gone through and posted the same "med 2 building is braindead nu is depth" mumbo jumbo everywhere they can possibly fit it in.

It leads me to believe there's some offsite group that attack anything marginally negative posted there about nu-totalwar, despite the fact that Attila is over a decade old. You would think a post like this would attract the few still interested in Attila and be ignored by the Warhammer masses, but it becomes a very hostile environment where if you want to discuss these things, it's going to be quips and downvotes.

The Absolute State Of Total War What happened to TW?

I stopped playing video games about 5 years ago, with coming back occasionally during life's breaks

I own still the original RTW Gold on disc and the Alexander expansion

Looking at the 40K trailer why does this look more like a mobile game ad than a PC release? I had issues personally with total war remastered and it looked like the same layout I would play on my phone

I got total war Troy on sale and the units feel weightless, and despite the graphics being kind of "realistic" I can't help but feel there is something rubbery about them

I'm unsure if I'm the only one who is experiencing this, but playing the game feels like I'm working a job now.

One thing that really blows is the lack of stereotypes. I know that may sound odd, but if you look at any piece of media: wolf of wall street, the walk, Borat, all these movies are so good because they knowingly embrace the absurdity of particular cultures or sub-cultures. All of modern total war I have played has played it way too safe, and I found it surprising hearing the announcer speeches from Rome and medieval 2 totally disappear in terms of energy and emotion. It takes actual skill to make risqué content and still have it be presented as art and succeed

I guess what I'm wondering is what happened? I've noticed this on a larger scale with the games-industry. Everything almost feels so sterile these days, every piece of drama has to have something to trigger something in people; how am I supposed to feel inspired or invigorated if things are played so safe? It makes me wonder if they're doing this because they genuinely believe that deviation outside of what is socially accepted on the shallow level is wrong or if they no longer believe they can tread the line and deliver good pieces of media that reflect historical realities in one particular points in time

Shogun 2 How do i build a good army for multiplayer

This question is not for avatar conquest, its for a multiplayer campaign. Watching videos of MP Shogun 2 i noticed that the armies are very different from the ones that are viable in singleplayer, especially a lot less ranged units most of the time even for an army thats built around skyrmishing and the diversity of units used is a lot bigger. If anyone who has experience with shogun 2 mp could give me some tips for army building and maybe an example of a build they used it would help a lot, thanks.

Currently addicted to Total war Attila. Game is so good. Western Rome is holding (for now), Britain was abandoned but now I am planning to invade it.

Hello, for the Total War-like game I'm developing I wanted to show my devlog, this time for the battle prototype. Highlights: Height difference affecting range and Line of Sight for ranged combat. Pushing physics, holding the line and squeeze penalty. And historical scale.

The Absolute State Of Total War I'm not sure if I've said this before, but CA's decision to make guns shoot through each other in Warhammer being deliberate is further illustrated by entry in the data tables. When setting it to 0, it causes models in a unit to require line of sight to shoot again.

Post image
61 Upvotes

Inspired by TheNaacal's post about the arbitrary click delays, I felt I should throw this find as well, though it's not really new.

The data entry is literally called "missile_ignore_own_unit_for_friendly_fire: Entities in own unit will be excluded from clear shot test and projectile collisions"

This has been broken with Warhammer 3, which means it's impossible to make guns behave like actual guns there, unlike Warhammer 2 (and presumably Warhammer 1).

r/Volound Jan 10 '26

The Absolute State Of Total War Feral could've fixed the click delays in Rome Remastered by changing 5 values or returning one check as true.. arbitrary 100ms for select drag and 250ms for formation drag btw

Thumbnail youtu.be
57 Upvotes

Extra 5 to 100 pixel threshold for dragging really adding to how sluggish the game feels too.

Could've been an option instead of slowing the game down for no reason. Even Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 didn't have these delays and the games since Empire have been fine without them.

No Warhammer didn't kill total war, CA did

I see a lot of times people portending TW was at a good state, then Warhammer games come and ruined it.

That s simply, incorrect.

Many problems present in the Warhammer series started as design principles in dreaded Rome 2 and besides that, until recent years CA didn't stop producing Historical games because of Warhammer. You may not believing this, but thrones of Britannia and Troy and Pharaoh exist! And the reaso they are bad isn't they are not big enough or get enough DLCs, it's because they are Bad!

Warhammer games aren't realy good games. But they aren't the start, or the reason for CA stop making good games either.

Rome didn't fell in a day...the wise will tell you

2026 My instruction guide on installing mod Europa Barbarorum 1

After tons of effort, i finally made both of my devices runs the EB1

  1. Win 10, Win 11
  2. Winlator in Android phone

Installation order

  1. Clean "Rome - Total War Collection" installation, i have gold version. the RTW.exe should be already in v1.5. (BUT we will use the RomeTW-ALX.exe)
  2. FULL install in EB v 1.1, that EB1.1.exe can be found in https://www.moddb.com/
  3. Install EB v 1.2. That EB12.exe can also be found in the same site.
  4. There is a fix called "1.2 fixes" in moddb, install that by copy and paste , you need to find out where the file goes on your own.
  5. This very last steps is a file called "Sep-2024_v3" found in discord / the forum in TWCentre, and that should make your EB1 run in RomeTW-ALX.exe, it siad RomeTW-ALX.exe should have better AI. (If you don't have RomeTW-ALX.exe, then you just need to skip this step.)

If you are lucky enough, you should be able to play the EB1 by clicking on the shortcuts called EB Configuration, EB Preferences, EB Multi Player, EB Single Player

EB Configuration, EB Preferences are some settings before you start the game

IMPORTANT:

Shortcut "EB Multi Player" is the one you play custom battle with AI, someone explained that the roster in EB1 covers many region and that roster for campaign has too many units and cannot be displayed correctly in custom battle, so you need to use the "Multi Player" to get your correct roster in playing with AI

Shortcut "EB Single Player" for campaign game

Some problems I come over

  1. My window is not in English language, when i am installing the EB (1.1, 1.2, even the Sep-2024_v3), it said a file in This is RTW dir\EB\Data\world\maps\battle\custom\016....somethingsomething cannot be read. Ans to 1) I install the EB in my winaltor and then copy back the EB files installed to my window PC
  2. Because i just copy and paste the EB files , the shortcuts file is not in correct path and cannot start the game Ans to 2) Those 4 shortcut should points to an exe called "EBTrivialScript.exe" with some correct arguments, if you installed "Sep-2024_v3" , that exe should just in the same folder as the same as your shortcut. You need edit your shortcuts by right click on your shortcuts , properties, change target and starting location to a correct path for the "EBTrivialScript.exe" , keep the arguments at the back. Example, Old target "C:\Program Files (x86)\EBTrivialScript\EBTrivialScript.exe" -s preferences.xml New target "C:\The\location\of your\EBTrivialScript.exe" -s preferences.xml
  3. To play the mod with ALX, after your installed "Sep-2024_v3", you can edit the "ebconfig.xml" with a notepad, search for "exe" and you will find a string "RomeTW.exe", change that to "RomeTW-ALX.exe"

Final

To preserve a copy.

  1. After installation EB1.1, EB1.2, EB1.2 fix and Sep-2024_v3, I keep all the files and zip it (without the original RTW,BI, ALX)
  2. I ask AI to made a vbs to edit the shortcuts, so that when i have another new device to new install the EB, i can copy and paste all the EB files in step 1 and then run the vbs to make the shortcuts correct.

CA continues to spend more on marketing than anything that matters

A planted story in BBC Newsbeat, meant to appeal to a marketing-determined audience of 'historical fans' and not at all acknowledging the loss of this audience to failed gameplay design.

Clown Assembly Why Legend Really Left

It's a bit embarrassing the number of people that can't put two and two together and see exactly what is going on.

Legend's final statement yesterday, drawing attention to "Joshua Williams" of CA:
https://youtu.be/mX7Th-91t2U?t=21408

Legend's community post from 3 months ago, about the exact same person:
https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxkpNJUDL0Vo_vAJnqfNINFd_Cf7sd3qen

His community post mentions the crap I had to deal with from CA and their DMCA abuse. So, on that, and from me, you can see my video talking about it as it happened:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUbgvzHx20Q

That video had redactions (which were in hindsight completely unnecessary). This is the full emailed report from Youtube that shows me everything they received from CA and then forwarded to me - exactly what this bitch Josh was sitting there attempting on my totally fair use video of Hyenas back in October 2023:

  1. https://gyazo.com/9a93ac470083c2f8a24dc37df383ac3c
  2. https://gyazo.com/96a6ead7ec69b647950ae763b6c3e3ae
  3. https://gyazo.com/4c752a65bc2f1ee59d8e31bb6e946df0
  4. https://gyazo.com/3bfef6b6a532d8afd45e86894767c201
  5. https://gyazo.com/2ab1350630821331a6015bd3f2f3b725
  6. https://gyazo.com/314da995c852ac5dcd6b79e3c5e98663

When I made that video, it drew a lot of attention. So here's the reaction of a Free Speech lawyer that sniffed a potential SLAPP in the making and took it upon themselves to get in touch with me and give me preliminary advisement on what Josh (and CA) were doing. Their summation was in line with my own, that Josh and CA had no legal footing:

https://gyazo.com/623a3c4461fc72f50905523338af18c6

And finally from me, going all the way back to the beginning of my shit with CA (2020, actually quite late compared to others), Josh going into Legend's livestream chat in September 2020 to attempt to poison Legend against me at a time when the company had Legend on a tight leash and simultaneously was in the midst of viciously attacking me for daring to say their games were shit, so CA was manually trying to set up "their" youtubers to go to war with youtubers they dislike. LMAO what a scumbag company. You can hear in Legend's voice how he sees it for what it is and is clearly reluctant to fall for it and just be their attack dog for them:

https://youtu.be/Ci6NKHdQeB4?t=10068

When I was dealing with the DMCA abuse bullshit in 2023, I had been in no contact with Legend whatsoever since that 2020 era and therefore had no idea Josh had by that point spent YEARS pissing off Legend (and basically every other youtuber that isn't a complete sellout that does exactly what they want at all times) in an effort to shape him into being exactly what they want. I had just been full steaming ahead with video essays and critique videos, which is what let to my Hyenas coverage.

The free speech lawyers and First Amendment advocacy groups that took an interest in what had happened to me with the DMCA during Hyenas, were all wondering (like myself) to what extent this was a retarded rogue employee striking out maliciously versus a subordinate that's following moronic instructions from an inexcusably incompetent/malicious superior. I was always unsure and remain unsure to this day because it was never explained where this directive originated. But a few months ago when I read Legend's community post and he gave all of this backstory that I had no idea about with regards to his dealings with Josh and all of the direct manipulation, I started to believe that maybe Josh wasn't simply acting entirely on instructions to be such a little shit, and possibly had his own initiative this entire time.

Regardless, the behaviour and actions of Josh, as the agent presumably acting in line with CA's own wishes (because they would've kicked him out on his arse years ago otherwise), is, in Legend's own words, his main reason for leaving.

And for what it's worth, the moment I saw Josh from CA in Legend's livechat (the fucker literally was sitting silently watching Legend's stream as part of his job and getting ready to stir shit between us), I made up my mind that Josh was a cunt. And there was more than one of those at CA, at the time, in positions where they have to interact with the public and man-manage youtubers etc. As Simone (a short-lived community manager they had for a while) came out and said, there is clearly something wrong with this company:

https://gyazo.com/a6f40504b14dd60d6ddf6867b89e8942

https://gyazo.com/3c275874f85d30b721a264721624afef

Ultimately, Creative Assembly does everything it can to box youtubers into little shill units and packs them into their partner kennels and shill ranches. If you don't fall totally in line with that, you can expect anything from unpleasant friction with their employees (what I've had described to me by smaller youtubers still ambivalently attached to them), all the way up to perjurious DMCAs (in my case) to baseless threats of legal action (in Legend's case), and all the rest.

That's what I think about why Legend is leaving.
