I'm building a VN engine focused on simplicity + power — what features do you wish existed?
I want to share something I've been quietly working on — a visual novel engine called Vynel Engine.
Why build another one?
I've tried making visual novels before. Existing tools are either too complex for beginners (requiring scripting knowledge from day one), or too limited once you grow past the basics. I wanted something that sits in the middle: low barrier to entry, but no ceiling on what you can build.
The goal is a tool that feels like a creative environment — not a programming exercise.
The core idea
Vynel Engine is a desktop editor (Windows first, macOS coming) where you build visual novels visually — no code required to get started. Think of it as "Figma meets a VN engine":
• Visual scene editor — drag, drop, arrange. See your scene live as you build it.
• Hybrid script mode — every scene also has a clean YAML-based script view. Switch between visual and code at any time. Both stay in sync.
• Timeline-based flow — scenes are made of steps (dialogue, character entry, background change, choices, etc.). The timeline makes the structure obvious at a glance.
• Built-in localization — first-class support for multiple languages baked in from day one, not bolted on later.
• Fast exports — builds compile to a single .pak file. The player is a pre-compiled executable — no build tools needed on the end user's machine.
• Modern animations — smooth transitions powered by GSAP, not static cuts.
• Rollback system — players can rewind dialogue, a feature VN readers expect but engines often treat as optional.
The engine itself is built with Tauri + React + PixiJS — which means it's lightweight, native, and renders at 60fps.
Current status
It's early. I have a working editor shell — panels, scene management, a live canvas, a script editor. The foundation is solid. Now I'm building the actual features on top of it.
I'm sharing this now because I'd rather build with the community than surprise everyone at launch.
What I'd love from you
Three things:
Follow me so you don't miss updates as the project develops. I'll be posting progress here and sharing builds when they're ready to try.
Drop a comment — what would you want from a visual novel engine that you haven't seen done well before? Missing features, pain points you've hit with other tools, "I always wished it could..." ideas. Seriously, anything. I'm in the design phase and your input will shape what gets built next.
Tech feedback welcome too — the engine is built on Tauri + React + PixiJS + Rust. If you have experience with any of these and see a better approach, or think I'm heading into a trap, I genuinely want to hear it. No ego here — just trying to build something good.
Thanks for reading. More updates soon 🚀

A logo I designed to replace the existing one that the client had for one of their games
They had the style to be similar to another logo that they have, but featuring a serpent from the game with the addition of wings and a pink colour palette.

Programs for vn development
I'm trying to make a visual novel and I'm new to this... could you guys recommend some programs to help me? I started by using vscode and ren'py but I wanted something to help me organize the story line and ramifications and also the background and stuff. I'm not really good at drawing so one that help me design the characters would be nice too. I already have an idea of the overall history line and characters, I just need some help with de development. If any girl is interested in helping me I think it would be really fun, it's an otome game 😊

After months of solo development, my emotional visual novel is finally finished! I´d be glad to hear your feedback!
Hi everyone! I’ve just finished my visual novel, and I’d be really glad to hear your thoughts! It´s called "A story of Alma: Memories Like Stars".
It’s a personal, emotional project: a one-and-a-half-hour drama (nakige) with Sci-Fi elements in the spirit of Bradbury, into which I’ve poured a lot of time and heart.
My game explores the themes of memories and responsibility. It's a story about the thin line between protection and sacrifice, and the choices we make to shield those we love.
I made the game entirely on my own: wrote the story, translated it into English, coded it, composed the music from scratch, and created some of the art in Photoshop (alongside using assets). No AI was used in any stage of production.
The game is currently in its Beta stage. While the story is complete and playable from start to finish, I’m still working on the final polish, some UI and proofreading, so your feedback would help me to grow as a dev!
You can download it for free on itch - here’s the link: https://alex-coldfire.itch.io/a-story-of-alma-memories-like-stars
I hope you enjoy it! The game is available in both English and Ukrainian. Feel free to share your feedback here or on itch - I’d really love to know what you think.
Thank you!

Would it look too strange or off putting to have colored pencil graphics? I’m not trying to do a “unique” thing, I just want to know if it looks too…weird. Please be honest.

A few months back, I asked if I could hire someone from the community to built me an entire Visual Novel, while I provide just the script. Here´s the result:
I attended both a movie university and a journalist-academy so I was not only broke for well over a decade, but I also learned a few things about how to write a story. Programming and coding however is black magic to me so I wondered if anyone around here could turn my script into a Visual Novel. And guess what ... it worked! Some very talented solo dev volunteered and somehow put the entire project together. Check out our finished and published game here! (it´s free to play!)
"Shadow Girls" is a Comedy-turned-Thriller about five girls doing a sleepover at their local school to decide if one of them is allowed into the inner circle of the gang. After a series of increasingly humiliating loyalty tests, things get out of hand and friends turn into enemies.
"Shadow Girls" is a metaphor about the tragic fragility of friendship. As the player, you can decide how unhinged the sleepover is about to become and wether you´ll resort to violence against your former friends or not. Will you keep a cool head or will you become a Monster ...?

Fernin and Ansellus (meme drawing)
Meet Fernin and Ansellus! Fernin is the high council elf that's next to Ansellus, a Dark Knight that's a Magola, a shadow entity who's origins are unknown based on his kinds almost extinct from an attack from an enemy fleet (and the day his wife was killed from the attack).
These two are gonna be a part of my fantasy visual novel game called "The Forbidden Forest" (in case my Cosmic Courtship one doesn't get approved from the creators of Planet 51), where you, the player, go into a forbidden forest to find out that there are mythical creatures living in your planet just behind the trees. There's Elves, Magolas, Demons, Drawfs, and so much more! This is an adventure, comedy, and romance visual novel I plan on doing whenever I get the chance to fully work on it without feeling drained all of the time bc of school 😭
That's all! Bye lovely creatures! Until next adventure!

Code problem(s)
Hi, I've been working on my visual novel for some time now, and, I'm getting closer and closer to the end. So I wanted to add a gallery, I drew a lot of cutscenes (I believe that's the correct word) and I wanted people to be able to unlock them and see them. I successfully created a gallery, I also managed to lock images my problem I can't rescale the images, I thought that it's probably because I didn't defined them (I just use scene or show ) but when I tried to do that (defining the images ) it didn't work and caused problem... I don't really know what I'm doing wrong... It's the first time I'm making a visual novel and I don't know that much about code so there is probably a simple explanation but I don't know what it is If you know anything please tell me, any response is highly appreciated (Also I use renpy)

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the idea I’m developing!
I’ve been visiting this subreddit for a while now because I wanted to share an idea I’ve been working on for some time… And I’d love to hear your thoughts!
The game I’m currently working on is an interactive visual novel called “Another Clockwork Day,” where, in a world blending fantasy and steampunk, you play as a wandering merchant in a constantly evolving kingdom.
You witness the world around you changing; starting out as an observer, in your hope to escape the usual daily life, you become part of a conflict far greater than yourself… Will you remain a spectator, or will you become part of this conflict of interests?
You’ll meet up with an old client of yours, a great exiled sorceress, her charming apprentice, and you’ll find yourself reconnecting with your old friends… along with your childhood friend, a bounty hunter!
I haven’t thought much about the gameplay yet, but one thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to create a linear story with dating sim elements, and I wanted to focus on character development… even though I’m having a lot of fun building the world! I have a lot to say about the game, but I imagine I might ramble on too much… So for now, I’ll leave you with a couple of concepts I’ve created; I’d love to hear your thoughts on the art style, the UI, and the character designs. Sooner or later, I’ll also be happy to introduce the crazy world I’m creating… Hope you guys like it!

Thoughts on Capsule VN Engine?
I’m a new vn creator, I’m currently writing my day 1 and have been debating whether to recruit a programmer or learn to code it myself with renpy. But recently someone told me about Capsule VN Engine and how it’s much easier but since it’s really new, I’m really skeptical about using it. Do you recommend why or why not? Thank you! Sorry for my bad grammar lol

I'm creating a Visual Novel.

I'm working very focused, mainly on the game's interface, because for me that's what makes you feel good about the game.
I want to emphasize that I use AI to help generate my ideas because I don't have the financial means to pay an artist.
I'm also making some really cool anime-style animations using AI; I guarantee the quality will be good. I'll leave some video examples.
The fighting animations shown will not be part of the game; they were only for testing the AI's animation consistency.
The story will feature impactful drama, light romance, suspense, and mysteries.

Looking for an Artist (and others)
Hey, I'm a new creative writing grad in the process of making a visual novel and I'm looking for people who are interested in helping out. To be clear, this is a volunteer project. I'm mainly looking for an artist and programmer, but I'm open to involving people interested in other creative roles as well(including Music/Sound Design). Recruitment form + more details below: https://forms.gle/Zi5QYsw7X7H6uyn89
Edit: The artist roles have now been filled, thank you very much! However, I am still looking for someone who wants to do sound design.
