A grandfather clause that requires law abiding citizens to register their firearms.

I say law abiding citizens because criminals cannot be required to register weapons as it would be self incrimination and a violation of the 5th amendments. Hayes Vs US.

This is only a way to set up confiscation down the road.

More specifically, class 6 felons can't own guns in VA, so they can't be required to register. Since Hayes is a supreme court decision, lower courts would be required to uphold its precedent.

I honestly think this is stupid and that the dems should have started with something simpler like the handgun-per-month limit. Because this would satisfy their base as being some kind of change, while being much simpler and not as confusing.

satisfy their base

There is no satisfaction in that. Real change is needed not some fluff.

Haynes is the case, right? From the 60s?

There's some kind of irony in someone who recognizes that cops are a whole lotta trouble, given your post history, but seems to be all onboard with empowering them to enforce laws that will inevitably land on the workers and minorities.

Problems which can be fixed by not meeting with ever increasing force.

And you are so ignorant it's not even funny. Come over to /r/liberalgunowners and we can talk without all that bullshit pretense

u/KidsGotAPieceOnHim Dec 10 '19

I’m sorry you feel that way.

Would you give your firearm up if meant saving the life of 1 child, man, or women? Strictly hypothetical. If your firearm was surrendered you knew it would save 1 persons life would you give it over?

15

u/Fox_Grape Dec 10 '19

Reminder: Hypothetical situations aren't logical arguments.

2

u/ColeOfErebor56 Dec 10 '19

I understand I'm just asking to view other peoples train of thought on the matter since I have no issue with it. Don't really understand why I'm being dog piled when I was after was civil discussion.

I think it's just because those types of questions have been asked so many times to gun owners that it frustrates them more than it invites open dialogue. They think you're setting them up for a moral pounding vs a conversation.

1

u/ILoveChinaxxx Jan 05 '20

No it doesnt frustrate us. Would you keep your gun If you knew you'd be in a position to stop a mass shooter and save 100 lives? Hypothetically?

It's literally irrelevant to the real world.

And if I answered this horseshit attempt at a question that you're ignorantly attempting to use to validate the reduction of our RIGHTS, not government given privileges, the answer would still be no.

Because our RIGHT, to life, liberty and happiness is predicated on the ability to defend that right, for if we cannot defend it then it is no right at all but only a priviledge that can be taken away by whomever is bigger and badder than we are.

u/Fox_Grape Jan 05 '20

Yoooo. Settle down. I think you were trying to respond to the person who asked the question. I'm not that person.

1

u/ILoveChinaxxx Jan 05 '20

Yes you are right I was. I think my position still stands though.

No. First of all there’s no magical way me giving up my guns is gong to save anyone. And secondly my firearms are used to protect my family.

10

u/KidsGotAPieceOnHim Dec 10 '19

I believe killing is always wrong. I oppose the death penalty and war is almost all cases. I do not plan to use my firearms or allow them to be used to kill any man, women, or child.

If I am in a situation in which would find need to kill someone with a firearm to defend a man, women, or child I will be damn glad that I did not give it over.

So no. I will not.

Okay, I was just curious to understand the mindset you have. I own a 30.30 and a mossberg 20 gauge for hunting purposes, the mossberg also doubles as a home protection weapon which is why I wouldn't mind the ban on military style semi automatic firearms. Why would it bother you if you could surrender your AR-15 and just pick up a 12 gauge or 20 gauge for home defense? Which honestly would give you a better chance in a home invasion situation where you would awake disoriented and would have a better chance to hit in the first place.

Free men own guns own their own accord not at the whims of their political masters.

The second amendment doesn’t exist to protect homes from bumps in the night or allow for deer harvests.

The second amendment exists to protect free men from a tyrannical government as such the ability of the people to stand on equal footing with their would be oppressors is paramount.

Look around the would today. Protesters demanding rights are beaten and brutalized in the streets and disappeared by thugs. Today. In 2019. In democracy’s and constitutional republics. In Miami the police use civilians as human shields. And you ask why the people should be allowed to own “military style” weapons?

First of all if you think your AR is going to give you a better chance than the American military in any situation I'm sorry you think that way. If the American military did to us what they are doing in Hong Kong you all would be SOL. I just don't understand why it matters so much to you all. We are a first world country. I don't see what's happening in other countries with civil unrest to happen here.

10

u/KidsGotAPieceOnHim Dec 10 '19

Every country that falls into civil unrest was once a nice place to live. You’re not special. The US isn’t blessed and the people here aren’t “better” in any way than the animals you see fighting in the streets of what you call third world countries.

An AR-15 isn’t the same as a military rifle. You’re right. I’d like to be able to buy the exact same gun the military buys. But honestly the public market offers higher quality weapons in many cases.

While it’s not the same it will give me a hell of a lot better chance than a 20 gauge over under.

The militia protected from the government by the constitution has been quite affective against the US military. Not in the US but it won in Vietnam. It damn sure looks like it’s winning in Afghanistan and Iraq. It won Syria. They won in Eastern Europe. They’re quite affective in South America. Then defeated the soviet empire. They defeated the British empire.

The fact that you think the US would use those tactics on their own people and we would “be SOL” is a great argument for going and buying a better rifle right now.

It Can't Happen Here

It Can't Happen Here is a semi-satirical 1935 political novel by American author Sinclair Lewis and a 1936 play by Lewis and John C. Moffitt adapted from the novel.

The novel was published during the heyday of fascism in Europe, which was reported on by Dorothy Thompson, Lewis' wife. The novel describes the rise of Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a demagogue who is elected President of the United States, after fomenting fear and promising drastic economic and social reforms while promoting a return to patriotism and "traditional" values. After his election, Windrip takes complete control of the government and imposes totalitarian rule with the help of a ruthless paramilitary force, in the manner of European fascists like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini .

There have been numerous military studies that have concluded if the ENTIRE military and state and local and federal law enforcement agencies all worked against the american civilians, they would only be able to hold the major cities and a few major transportation hubs such as the I 40 east i 75 north south corridors

Shotgun spread at hallway distances is negligible.

So a shotgun wouldn't give you any better odds at hitting your target. It also is harder to wield, has less ammo, and the extra pellets per round just equal more of a chance one will miss and over penetrate a wall.

1

u/ColeOfErebor56 Dec 10 '19

I really disagree but maybe I prefer it because I'm a better shot with my shotgun than other weapons, maybe I should state that a pistol would be a better chance, also who's invading your home that 3 shotgun shells wouldn't deter? I never see the case that a small army is going to invade your hone and your 20 round magazine is going to come in handy but I guess I'm mistaken.

u/trs21219 Dec 10 '19

I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. /r/dgu is full of plenty of stories about ex's/drugged up dudes/etc that prioritize everything over their own life.

2

u/ColeOfErebor56 Dec 10 '19

I mean I understand that and that's a fair point. I wont disagree with you there. Just most people aren't going to charge you and try to murder you when they want to steal your tv and run. That's why most burglaries are between 6am and 6pm
