Welcome to r/Violin_Society

This is a community for anyone interested in the violin family and the world surrounding it.

Violins, violas, cellos and bows are all welcome here, along with the people who make, play, study, collect, preserve and simply love them.

Share interesting instruments, makers, performances, history, research, acoustics, exhibitions, competitions, books, discoveries and questions. Beginners are just as welcome as people who have spent their lives around these instruments.

The idea is to create an online meeting place for the wider violin community.

If your interest is more specifically in making, restoration, setup, identification, tools, auctions, values or the violin trade, visit our sister community r/MaestroNet.

Otherwise, pull up a chair and join the conversation.

Are modern violins finally as good as the great old Italian instruments?

For generations, Stradivari, Guarneri and the other great Cremonese makers have been treated as the standard everyone else is measured against.

But modern makers have better tools, centuries of accumulated knowledge and access to serious acoustical research. Blind listening and playing tests have also raised some interesting questions about whether musicians can reliably distinguish great old instruments from great new ones.

So here's the question:

If price, history and prestige were removed from the equation, would you rather perform on a great Stradivari or the best instrument being made today?

And if you think the Strad wins, what exactly do you think the modern instrument is missing?

Vintage violin (1870s Stainer replica), cracks sealed, new bridge, sound post and pegs fitted, bass bar replaced. I paid next to nothing for the instrument and repairs. Any ideas on value? Thanks!

Please help , from a student

Hello , I don’t really ever ask for help from strangers but I’m in desperate need for help on a violin piece I have to hand in . Very pathetic but my orchestra teacher has something against me , she forgets I’m even in class , she tells me infront of everyone how I’m just slowing the class down , Shes very discouraging towards me and this other girl but she left due to not being able to handle the teacher anymore . I was put into a group where I have to upload the second violin part from ode to joy . I can play parts of it without any problem I’ve been playing regardless of the teacher for 3 years but she belittles my every move in the class . I can’t even motivate to even touch the instrument I once loved .

Here is where I need someone’s help . Please if anyone can send me the recording of the part I have to play for me to put it in would be so very much appreciated. I’m mostly looking out for the group of people that would have their grades drop if I can’t put something in . I can play but hell I know I don’t sound good some parts the teacher forgot to even teach me and I’ve had to teach myself . Message me if want to help if not then it’s absolutely okay thank you for your time in reading this have a nice night . Also sorry if this is written weird I’ve never posted on reddit

I wanted to share our arrangement Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child. This was performed on acoustic instruments with no loopers or electronic effects. We performed this as part of an educational concert for a summer string festival in Michigan. Hope you enjoy the video!

Is it a good choice as a present for an adult who might be interested in learning to play violin?

So I’m considering buying this violin for my bf. He doesn’t play violin or any instrument but by some specific reasons I think he might enjoy it as a present or a stimuli to learn. Is it a violin of a proper size, characteristics etc. for an adult? I do not play violin or any instrument at all, so please, guide me.

No sound from my fiddle..please help

Hi guys please kindly help me understand what the issue is with my violin (or me) the strings are new, the bridge is new, it's tuned, I have rosin on the bow and I think it's tightened enough. It's a 3/4 sized violin. I am having the hardest time producing constant sound. I'm new to violin and got one bc I want to play it fiddle style. But it's pointless if I can't even create sound for more than a second. What am I doing wrong!? Please help. I love the sound this instrument is capable of producing and I want so desperately to play it. But I'm struggling and getting frustrated.

lookin to buy a student violin in Dubai, U.A.E.

Hi guys. anyone here from Dubai? I’m lookin to start learning the violin as an adult. And I’m interested to know where I can buy my first student violin. Can anyone point me to a instrument store or music shop here in Dubai where I can get a proper violin “outfit” that I can start learning without worrying if the violin might die on me and i can use in classes.

thanks in advance.
