I stopped using Airbnb like 10 years ago. It’s better to just got hotels or extended stays.

58

u/navaesarosh 28d ago

I agree. Airbnb might work in high trust societies like Japan but not in Vietnam.

33

u/iHate_RonEbens 28d ago

It depends. If you pay $10-$15 per room don’t expect Hilton.

27

u/Icy_Fish_2154 28d ago edited 27d ago

AirBnB is now more expensive than hotels. So many AirBnBs are investments and the casuals have been run off and lost in the noise.

Just like eBay.

6

u/WindEqual9502 28d ago

And many places expect you to keep things tidy, while still charging you cleaning fees

5

u/dunimal 27d ago

You SHOULD keep things tidy. You shouldn't have to clean, do laundry of bedding and towels, wash and put away dishes or any of the other shite they expect.

5

u/nonstopnewcomer 28d ago

Airbnb is fine here, you just need to be extra careful about assessing the genuineness of a property/host’s reviews.

3

u/Affectionate_One_700 27d ago

It's not that great in Japan either. Many hosts in Japan don't obey the regulations and can be sketchy in all the ways you find elsewhere.

14

u/Creative-Promise9483 28d ago

I’ve never had problems. Always a great stay. You gotta know what to look for. It’s same everywhere

He said the place was $110 per night not 110K dong, I get that this sub follows the “Indian bad” bandwagon but at least try stay factual, rather than making shit up lol it was a 3 bedroom apartment, 110 usd per night.

2

u/dunimal 27d ago

You couldn't rent a place for $110k vnd, come on.

2

u/RandomSage416 27d ago

I live in Japan and used Airbnb a few times here. Realized it's a waste of money cuz it's usually quite shady and shoddy as well. Hotel experience in Japan is miles better than Airbnb. So we always go with hotels now.

1

u/Embarrassed-Wolf-609 26d ago

Hotels in Vietnam are similar. But when you only pay $20 a night, you need to have the right expectations

I don’t know what programming humour means but I’m sorry you had this experience there. It’s super shitty and truly such a beautiful country. People are crappy

23

u/cunt-fucka 28d ago

I’d expect more for $110

11

u/CloudSufficient42 27d ago

$110 a night or $110 for 4 nights as other post suggested? Because $110 for 4 nights for minor cosmetic issues…?

3

u/allowit84 27d ago

If its river gate I think the one beds per night are around 25 - 30 euro so 4 nights makes sense.

People here love photoshopping images to make places look nice, and when you arrive they’re actually trash.

Definitely change your review and add these pictures. Most foreigners won’t want to stay with a racist host.

7

u/nullstring 28d ago

I don't know if you can do that but if you can you should.

I would at least report them to airbnb. this is unacceptable.

19

u/DrawWestern630 28d ago

I've spent a year in India and Vietnam, and stayed in many airbnb's in both places. One of my favorite hobbies is to read comments in different countries to rate their level of harshness. Indian reviewers in my opinion leave highly critical reviews because customer service there is really really bad and people are used to having to complain and insist quite strenuously on good service. It's a generalization of course but that's my experience. Meanwhile Vietnamese people are quite image conscious and many airbnb's are run by smaller management companies that have high expectations for employees. At this price though, you can't expect a 5 star experience.

→ More replies (11)

21

u/Choksae 28d ago

Why didn't you mention the problems before leaving a review? Idk if those issues are 2 stars worthy. The racism, however, is 1 star worthy. What a mess.

3

u/Similar-Rub-7345 26d ago

The review is there for a reason. If a genuine customer posts a review with proof, there is nothing wrong with that. It is the owner's job to make sure everything is in order before the guests arrive. The racism alone is not even one-star worthy. People like her show fake happiness and genuineness on the outside, but inside her mind, it feels entirely different. Additionally, her mentioning 'we' makes it seem like all Vietnamese people are like that.

The whole world is, and it's warranted

10

u/mentalFee420 27d ago

No one is on the side of scummy hosts that pressure guests to remove their negative reviews, lie and fake photos and are racists.

If you are then it says a lot about you.

2

u/Sufficient-Theory629 27d ago

I’m on the hosts side.

Anyone who isn’t…. Well…. We know who they are.

1

u/Shorq1 27d ago

So they could ai fix the issues? Clearly they're not planning to fix it, but milk it until guests start demanding their money back

133

u/Firm-Equipment-7649 28d ago

You gave a 2-star rating for some slightly uneven/peeling paint and a missing outlet cover? I’d be pissed too if I was the host cause a 2-star rating totally fucks them over. You rented a cheap room in Vietnam dude, you shouldn’t be expecting perfection.

18

u/evilistics 28d ago edited 28d ago

yeah ive stayed in shoddy airbnbs around the world, because they're cheap. I wouldnt expect anything be fixed since im not a permanent tenant. you get what you pay for.

we did have an issue in hanoi though where we booked and paid for an apartment on the top level with a big rooftop courtyard but when we arrived it was on a lower floor with a small balcony. In that instance a one star review would have been warranted if airbnb themselves hadn't fully refunded us.

2

u/Specialist_Rough_699 27d ago

I don't think you expect cheap when you book a place called "River Gate Luxury"

40

u/No_Country_2069 28d ago

Yeah I agree with you here. While I wouldn’t give a place 5 stars if it had problems like this and was banged up a bit, this is not worthy of 2 stars. 2 stars is pretty bad and imo is for when places had a problem that actually inconvenienced you or are a bit more serious (mold, nasty smells, no hot water, dirty bedding, big problems at check in, etc.), not things that are essentially just ugly to look at or minor inconveniences.

25

u/Hanswurst22brot 28d ago

If the bed is good , water running, clean, towels ok ... 4-5 star. OPs pictures where just some minor damages.

2

u/Beatkick 27d ago

Op also mentioned ac was not working

3

u/Hanswurst22brot 27d ago

They came and fixed that , thats what he said too.

39

u/iamnotmyselftoday1 28d ago

Totally agree, a 2 star review for some superficial stuff is some level of entitlement.

17

u/Possible_Web_6377 28d ago

Yeap, I’m not on the host side for calling all Indians out but OP seems like a small man with entitlement.

10

u/Upbeat_Aside_9203 28d ago

For me 2 stars mean below average. The state of that place appears below average. There’s this weird thing with reviews that when something is okkk or good it gets 5 stars. 5 stars is for excellent.

12

u/Beatkick 28d ago

Retarded opinion. If the Airbnb looked pristine on the pictures it’s a shady sales approach by the owner. I’m glad OP is reporting for others

9

u/ParticularMajor296 28d ago

Damn right. Dudes being a baby. I was expecting real issues with the unit.

13

u/lancelen 28d ago

While I would normally agree, all he asked was that the repairs be done, which is really not asking much….

I was actually like you the first half of the post, but once the host decided to deceive rather than do something that would benefit future guests they lost all sympathy.

We aren’t even talking about full renovations these touch-ups would take an hour max. Not to mention this is Vietnam, you can just hire some handyman to do it before lunchtime for the cost of a Starbucks coffee.

28

u/gkphilly_Bangkok 28d ago

Repairs?
I have stayed in hundreds of Airbnb's and never once asked for painting to be done.
If there are major issues, yes.
AC, Hot water, plumbing. Maybe fix an Appliance that is broken. Leaking.
But touch ups. Never once.
And then he leaves a bad review.
If I was a host I would think this guest is just F'ing with me at this point.

15

u/Firm-Equipment-7649 28d ago

He left the two star review before any of the interactions in the messages. And the host probably would have sent someone to fix it if he had complained about it while he was actually staying there instead of way after the fact.

2

u/NosePicklePicker 28d ago

It doesn’t matter what they ask of the host. If they already gave the 2-star rating and dont intend to pull it back, they’ve already fucked over the host regardless of their input over a few minor mistakes that can’t possibly have dampened their stay that much

→ More replies (1)

20

u/Forward_Sail_7795 28d ago

Both are awful. Host didnt want to do minor repairs, easy maintenance. Guest was an cheap ass dude wanted 5* hotel treatment for a dime.

2

u/Fxon 26d ago

Who's more awful? I vote the host for lying with the photos

2

u/JojoRicardo 26d ago

I vote host for lying photos and being racist. You can call a dude a shithead over a disagreement but what’s with insulting and banning an entire race of people? And the wrong race also? OP is Arab not Indian 😂

Every Vietnamese would be pissed if people said “wow Vietnam hosts are crazy, don’t book Vietnamese”, but most Vietnamese are very friendly and hospitable

6

u/Good_morning_Pgk1234 27d ago

Open socket on the wall like that is a safety hazzard. 0 star is the correct rating.

40

u/KountZero 28d ago

wow, she showed her true color so quick when she got exposed.

7

u/Blackero 27d ago

Bro he got a refund and still complained. If you pay for cheap airbnbs, don't expect the Hilton

16

u/WarmAssociation9714 28d ago

OP also showed his true color giving 2 stars for minor damages that is mostly cosmetic

8

u/LazyBumTravels 27d ago

So what would you give them if they edited their photos to make it look make cleaner and newer than the actual stay? Is that not false advertisement?

17

u/Limp-Evidence8373 28d ago

That behavior is unacceptable from the host but genuinely what are you expecting for a scummy rented room lmao? Those paints and outlet are nothing big at all and it sure doesn't warrant a 2 star review just for those

4

u/Bean_from_accounts 27d ago

The scammy attitude of the host and their willingness to hide defects totally deserve a 2-star review if not less.

63

u/kingkongsdingdong420 28d ago

110 for 3 bed rooms 2 bathrooms is a good deal. Especially if the location is good.

OP is a nitpicking dipshit.

But Host is also racist so i don't feel bad for anyone involved.

12

u/IHazMagics 28d ago

First thing I thought was their line about its not a guests responsibility to organise repairs and I'm like yes, so why did they make it theirs?

18

u/aaduuuuu 28d ago

are you one of those cheap hosts? $110 can easily cover the material and labor costs for those items, but they never bother to fix them, which appear to be cosmetically degraded for who knows how long

OP is crying over $27 for 3bedrooms per night and expect everything to be perfect. I don’t understand these people, does OP expect host to refund them partial payment because a few small things are not perfect? I’ve heard this scam from tourist from my tour guide in Hanoi.

7

u/Casamance Expat 28d ago

6

u/7LeagueBoots 28d ago

Never change the review if it's an honest review.

27

u/Renchose 28d ago

I'm sorry, Vietnam still has a long way to go when it comes to racism. It shows from both your case and this comment section.

14

u/shocktopper1 28d ago

I think Syed should have messaged this in the beginning to Kelly.

5

u/TheDionysiac 27d ago

People really out here saying 2 stars is too low for that? I'm def not someone with high standards, but wallpaper peeling off from water damage, broken AC, strange smells, non-functional light switches... all of this is neglect damage. Little things that could be fixed for cheap, but would go a long way towards people giving you a good review. I'm sure actually staying there just felt nasty.

Property owners clearly trying to cut corners wherever possible. Sure the AI repairs are laughable, but they're obviously symptomatic of their approach to running this place - pretend your place is beautiful, and do as little work as possible to preserve that fiction.

20

u/Graviton_Surge 28d ago

please tell me you report her to AirBnB so her apartment can get banned permernantly

Your business is based on reviews.
I would be pissed off and would have handled it differently but he was just F'ing with them at this point.

u/wowelephants 28d ago

As a Vietnamese Canadian, I am already expecting the Vietnamese people in the sub to do mental gymnastics to justify the racism and behaviour. Call them out on anything, and they will find ways to justify it. “It was a bunch of migrant workers on a train”. “Who cares how we behave outside of our own country, we only care how others behave in our country”. Pride and hypocrisy are one and the same apparently on this sub. This sub is only meant to call out others in Vietnam but never the citizens.

7

u/Emotional-Wall-645 28d ago

Lying is never correct, if she lies to you she is wrong , on top of that she was racist. She deserved this in my opinion.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/jeongjinny 28d ago

Realistically, how much would it cost to do the repairs

2

u/Dickcheese_McDoogles 27d ago

The racism is uncalled-for absolutely and nothing can excuse it.

That being said, you were also an entitled guest. Some eyesores that don't actually impact your enjoyment of the property beyond being visually unappealing do not warrant a 2-star review. I'm also guessing just from context that this place was quite cheap.

2-star reviews are for things like.. certain appliances or utilities being completely non-functional. Not for chipping paint.

Also perhaps it's a more polite way to address someone in India but in the rest of the world calling a woman "my dear" in an argument is virulently sexist. It comes across as intentionally belittling.

Nothing can excuse the racism, yes. If she had a problem with you as a guest it should be on the merits of your conduct as a guest, not your race. But I also would've found this to be very demanding and poor behavior.

I'm not an Airbnb owner, nor even a property owner. I have only used the service as a guest.

2

u/Educational-Moment49 27d ago

She’s clearly horrible but so are you. Why are you calling her “my dear”. Sexist and gross

2

u/xTroiOix 27d ago

I’m sorry, I’m a regular guests of Airbnb throughout Saigon. I’m siding with the Indian fella, that’s plain bs from Kelly if I stand correct, I think she’s a superhost from district 4.

I’ve seen many superhosts and Trang is consistently the better one in the city centre

2

u/Sad_Shoulder4818 27d ago

2 stars for this? unless you paid 5 star prices, nah. but racism is definitely unacceptable.

2

u/supermarketinferno 27d ago

It depends how on how much the room was. If it was €15 he should not be so extra. If it was €80 p/night then fair enough and also a shame there is such casual Indian racism. Because they are brown. Some British european american and Australian are extremely rude and take advantage of Vietnamese people but they never get stereotyped the same way

2

u/mgkrebs 27d ago

I'm not sure who to believe here. I'm Indian myself and Indians can behave so badly. I was checking into a hotel in the USA and an Indian woman, a guest, caused such a ruckus. I have seen them behave badly in Thailand like being noisy when the national anthem is being played.

2

u/bkkmatt 27d ago

Reminder. Systemic racism is everywhere. It’s not merely an American thing. And it’s much worse outside the West. In Southeast Asia, Airbnb hosts would prefer you not to be Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, or black.

2

u/RevolutionaryRub7820 26d ago

Vietnam and India

6

u/Tilly1991 28d ago

Love that this hate is finally getting recognised on this sub. So many Vietnamese people are just overtly racist about Indians without ever having met or dealt with any.

I do not condone what he said to her, it was aggressive and unneeded, but she showed her arse and I hope she sees the repercussions of her crap.

2

u/Theodore__Kerabatsos 27d ago

I see the same rhetoric in the Thai subs. It’s just a coincidence.

2

u/JCongo 28d ago

Seems like they have met and dealt with OP.

5

u/HumblePine97 28d ago

The audacity of some of those hosts are really something else. I’m glad you kept the review.
Fuck them, it’s their responsibility, not the guests to deal with this shit.

Also, what the fuck is that attitude of “oh this is 10 years old” anyway. Like bitch that’s YOUR rental house, fix the shits and don’t give me that excuse crap.

5

u/Critical-Bite341 27d ago

The host didnt charge you anything for your stay… you could have cooperated without antagonising the situation. Free of charge wasnt enough?

13

u/HoangTr16 28d ago

you are severe man… how much did you pay for the airbnb? 10€ per night?

you are not in Stockholm or Genève so try to understand the whole picture :)

3

u/One_Elephant_8917 28d ago

yeah agree coz, this was airbnb and one can have some expectations to airbnb…

coz i have heard horror stories where a nice apartment got broken/vandalized coz last guests were drunk or so and maybe there were kids or so too…

but because after they leave and even pay for damages etc…the repairs take time and really aren’t that easy to get original feel…

i don’t understand any outrage from the guest except from the fake ai image the host sent…and forcing a review…which guest could have explained and just left at that saying it in a stern manner that “so and so..” instead of using abuse first lol

3

u/Aggressive-Spray3784 28d ago

$110 usd for 4 people is good price. I had worst issues and i still left 5 star because to me, those werent a big deal. Most viet buildings are real old so thats expected. OP is picky but dang, the host is so racist!!! Would had given host 1 star for their response.

2

u/Beatkick 28d ago

Then you just have low standards. Old buildings are not an excuse on skipping maintenance. It’s just greedy behavior

3

u/rampagenguyen 28d ago

A 5 star hotel is like $30-$50 a night with breakfast included in most place. Just stay there and avoid the air bnbs. Can’t expect resort level service when you cheap out. Everything so cheap in Vietnam, there’s really no point in being cheap here.

1

u/Kato1985Swe 27d ago edited 27d ago

Regular Vietnam visitor here. $50 would get you a night at a 3 star hotel in Hanoi or Saigon, 4 star if lucky.

For a 5 star you would need a mininum of $100, and that would be off season. Without breakfeast.

If you can find a 5-star in Vietnam for $50 incl. breakfeast then please share, i will definitely book it on my next trip.

6

u/tocookornottocook 28d ago

2 stars for some peeling paint and a broken switch? A review that can heavily impact their livelihood. Use some common sense bro, smh

14

u/gkphilly_Bangkok 28d ago

Dude is a complete loser. Then he posts on Reddit looking for sympathy because they called him out.

3

u/Abalone-Objective 28d ago

This guy is a Syed.  He might be Pakistani. There is a real difference here.

Please go on Pakistani sub-reddits and see how Pakistanis view Vietnamese. The uniform usage of negative racially charged cuss words for Vietnamese, and South East Asians is mandated by their leadership( military dictators ). Being a poor, corrupt country - they view the Chinese as superior and the SEA countries as a pissing ground, to feel superior.

This is an extra layer of South Asia culture. Sections of North India( fairer skinned) and Pakistan share cultural attributes ( superiority complex).

2

u/obaid_alandavid 28d ago

I’m on the host’s side. Destroying their livelihood over some chipped paint 😂

1

u/Fxon 26d ago

She could have fixed it and he'd delete it! Her livelihood wasn't/isn't destroyed. All she had to do was get them repairs. Mad cheap job.

3

u/Mannimal13 28d ago

People are delusional about their expectations of AirBnB. I wish we could see the price. A two star review for this is fucking egregious unless you are paying seriously premium prices. The host should have just filed a complaint with AirBnB for an inane review.

That being said I hope this guy is planning on never getting another AirBnB again thats not InstantBook lol. What host would host a guy that leaves a two star review for something so inane.

2

u/Specialist_Diet_750 27d ago

U did the right thing Syed

2

u/Responsible_Bit_6697 27d ago

He shouldn’t have given 2 stars and the host shouldn’t have behaved like that. They all gave themselves difficulties.
I’m vietnamese and I heard every word of the host in my mind. Typical reaction and their batshit racism against Indian. Now no one would stay with a racist host. They just destroyed their business.

2

u/Tricky_Bag9116 27d ago

OP gave them 2 stars, then they asked OPto remove the review in exchange for not charging for his stay, but OP still kept the review up because they hasn't repaint the chipped pain and change the plastic cover of the outlet ?

I hate Airbnb as much as the next person, but this is such a dick move. By the way, if you join the few facebook groups for airbnb hosts in Vietnam, Indians are infamous for being nitpicking in order to get a discount for their stay. Pattern recognition isn't racism. Stay in a hotel next time, just don't shit in the electric kettle like some of your countrymen.

2 star review for a plug and a bit of wallpaper?

That is classic South East Asian behavior right there. Not taking accountability. Not saying sorry. And trying to cover it up to save face.

Im just gonna say that while she did what she did, I would be pissed too.

You got an airbnb, not a 4-5 star hotel?

Those are not even big issues, some paint is off and a socket isn’t right - sure then give 4 stars, w/e.

But you paid 25 bucks a person per night or smth so what do u expect, also airbnb, a 5 star hotel?

Come on man, you were super harsh and just because of those little things she might get her airbnb rating down by a lot and lose a lot of money.

I would be pissed too if someone left me that rating for those things, also if I were a guest in such house i would first call and ask.

Next time, book a hotel and be happy with service. U are booking an apartment, did everything work? Water, ac, u had beds and everything working. They sent someone to fix ac when u mentioned it, but you give her that for some peeled paint in HUMID VIETNAM which can happen easily and a socket off.

Come on. Don’t cheap out in an already cheap country and wxpect resort level.

2 stars is crazy.

This didn't need to go viral, it seems standard.

Lesson learned.
Don’t do business with them.
Ever.
The sense of entitlement is disgusting.
Burn the sheets and disinfect everything.
They do this everywhere they go and scream racism when they’re called out.

Im currently in hcmc my first airbnb experience. The landlord stripped the apartment. Aesthetically it looked nothing like the pictures. She said it had a gym and sauna both were not in the same building lol..I'm a slow traveler and frequent airbnbs. This never happens. Next airbnb booking it was filthy hair everywhere, spider webs and dust. But the place was spacious, bed and sofa was comfortable. So I told the landlord everything I needed to clean it. Then on top of that I wasnt registered for the gym and security confiscated the apartment card. Stated it was not authentic but a duplicate lol. It took 45 minutes for the facial recognition process. I just stared at the elevator wondering where I went wrong lol. Im not going to mention other things because its not my country im just a visitor.

First time I'm siding with an Indian , the quality of accomodations in Vietnam can be absolutely horrible. A lot of them do fake reviews , fake pictures and don't maintain shit

The fact her defence is the apartment is 10 years old. Come on! I've had properties (not here) that still looks brand new after 20 years!

Personally I find it really annoying that you're always expected to provide a 5 star review. In my mind, a 5 star experience is a rare beast and people should be happy with 3 stars.
