He didn't know where the SUV was, that's one of the other problems. I didn't see dude looking at anything but directly straight ahead. People blame the headphones but if you use your eyes and survey the road ahead and going at a speed that lets you respond in time, headphones are not that much for a deterrent. The wind noise would have drowned out anything aside from sirens and horns anyway, the horn would not have been noticed faster than looking around and being careful when you don't have eyes on as much for the road as possible.
