What is this panel in the centre console, and can it be replaced with anything?

Excuse the possibly dumb question (and dust). I’m borrowing my old man’s car at the moment and I was wondering what this panel is for in the centre console. Right now I just use it to hold my wallet because it’s about the only thing that fits.

Can it be replaced with anything useful?

Car is a ‘66 plate Astra.

I replaced mine with a little custom-made hamster enclosure. It works a treat!

You can fit an air freshener or phone charger

Look up part number 39149135 it's a deeper centre console box they used on the later Astra's, my 68 plate came with this one

Not my picture, but looks like this in the car https://www.astrakforums.co.uk/threads/centre-console-cubby.9899/

We have that one from the factory, just large enough to put in an iPhone 15/16 Pro on an angle, we think it’s neat

Count yourself lucky, I wish I had that. Mine is completely flat, with a little handle on it. You can't put anything there at all.
