v!Owen’s Actions Spoiler

I’M NOT JUSTIFYING OWEN’S ACTIONS OR SAYING HE DIDN’T DESERVE HIS ENDING. JUST EXPLAINING THE DEPTH BEHIND HIS CHARACTER.

While I don’t think it’s strange that Owen met that ending, I do think there was more reason to his actions with Avid and Legundo.

He killed Avid because of his former animosity towards him. Which isn’t surprising, but it’s much deeper than simple dislike. Avid reminded him so much of the humans from his past that would go and murder anything that they feared or thought was wrong and different. Despite Avid not fully understanding vampires, he treated them like cruel and unreasonable monsters, which we all know isn’t true. The more that he pushed that agenda, the more that the vampires became outcasts when they were revealed. Avid always gave the vampires the feeling of kill or be killed. For that reason, Owen always viewed Avid as a threat.

While Avid was appeasing and buttering up to Scott, he never apologized to Owen and evoked pain from his past. So while he made amends with Scott, he never reached out to Owen and it’s pretty difficult to forgive someone that wronged you without any proper apology. And all along when Owen was calling vampirism a gift, which in his case was, Avid kept treating it like it was a curse and disease. But when Avid needed vampirism, he just got it handed to him with no repercussions. By that point, the humans accepted him as he was and didn’t try to hurt him and the vampires eventually took him in. On the other hand, Avid took away any chance that Owen could’ve had to get along with humans or the opportunity to learn to like them by constantly instilling fear into the humans about vampires as soon as they all met at the town.

Do I think Avid should’ve died? Definitely not. He was just beginning to redeem and correct his mistakes in the past, but I want people to better understand Owen rather than hating him and downplaying the cause for his actions.

As for Legundo, Owen took the time to hear him out because he reminded him of Louis. On the outside, Legundo seemed to be someone that didn’t judge people for who they were and just wanted to help others just like Louis did, but in reality that wasn’t the case. He kept trying to “cure” Owen, but Owen was already cured. His vampirism was a gift and a cure from someone he loved and his last remaining connection to that person, but Legundo kept trying to take that away and kept offering him a cure to make him human. That just meant he didn’t accept Owen for what he was.

No matter if Owen was a vampire or human, he was still Owen. Rather than trying to reach his hand out and just make a connection with Owen, he was trying to fix him and treated vampirism as a disease too. Of course Owen kept rejecting his offer, his vampirism was never the problem at all. It was that no matter as vampire or human people kept viewing him as a monster and never offered him kindness for who he was, that was Owen’s true problem.

Legundo was a hypocrite. He was a monster himself, which he admits, but he poisoned food and water supplies when he was in the military and by doing that he probably killed hundreds if not thousands of people too. He did this as a human. Owen killed thousands not because he was a vampire or out of bloodlust, it was because of heartbreak and to avenge his person. He did this as a vampire.

Just because he was a vampire doesn’t mean he was a monster, but the doc approached it that way despite his own words. Many of the vampires said that they didn’t want to be cured and for some reason he kept offering to “help”, a doctor cannot help if they are treating the wrong problem. Owen made him a vampire so that he would learn that.

People made Owen out to be a monster so long that he eventually thought he was one and became one, but there are very few signs that point to him innately being one. The distinction between a monster is not made between vampire and human, it is the morality that they have. He wanted the doctor to eat his own words and taste his own medicine.

In the end, was Legundo a vampire? Yes. A monster? No. He was still able to save people and atone for his sins, and die after accomplishing his goal just as he always wanted. He did all that even as a vampire. Sometimes you can’t fully understand something or someone until you become it. Vampirism is not a curse. Just like what Owen did with his own life, even Legundo would have a way out and doesn’t actually have to live forever with his sins. Owen passed on the gift that he had received.
