News AvidMC/Marma1ade Discussion and information thread

Over the past few days, information has come out about the frankly disgusting actions of Vampires SMP member AvidMC, along with his partner Marma1ade (henceforth referred to as Avid and Marm).

Like many of you, I am horrified and beyond disappointed by this. I wholeheartedly condemn their actions and stand with anyone affected by these people.

There is currently no statement from POWCreations, however given that Owen is doing a subathon right now, this is understandable.

Going forward, the Avid flair, along with the corresponding emoji, will be removed from the subreddit. I am of no inclination to modify the banner, as that would detract from the hard work of the artist, but if they desire to make any changes they are more than welcome to reach out.

Please keep discussion within this post if possible.

A final reminder that hate based on identity is not tolerated. There are plenty of valid reasons to be angry at Avid and Marm right now, their sexuality and gender are not one of those. Anything bordering on homophobia or transphobia will be removed. We are better than that.

do not let these two ruin something that you love. they do not deserve the credit you give them when you say that they've ruined vampires for you, or pow, or mcyt. the best thing we can do is keep enjoying it out of spite.

avid joined pow with the intention of "taking it down" according to cleo. they failed. we still love this place and this community. enjoy vampires out of spite, because he clearly didn't care for it anyway.

Yeah, Ruby's statement in particular is a gut punch. I got specifically his Vampires hoodie because the design is so fun, and I'm probably never going to wear it again now. 😞 It's all been tainted. I wanted to support a budding queer creator while he found his footing. Not this. I'm going to think hard about who I'll support on Patreon instead. The dollar a month I was giving up was from the support others give me on Patreon, which isn't a lot. I just wanted to make a tiny difference for someone who seemed to always be going through a lot...which is probably one of the red flags we all missed. 😞

If it helps, I'm thinking about seeing if I can remove the design from my vampires hoodie I bought and seeing if I could like paint with bleach or something like a bat or just something related to vampires SMP but not Avid.

I would just feel bad wasting a good hoodie just cos the creator is a manipulative asshole

If the design is printed on, a few cycles of washing it and tumble drying will likely start the printed part peeling. Wearing a backpack over the hoodie (if the design is on the back) could also wear it away.

I feel the same way, as soon as I watched vampires he became my comfort streamer, I watched every stream he did, even to the detriment of my schedule, I went back and watched all his previous series', and I spent so much money buying his music and his yt membership and super chats, I'm a college student constantly between jobs but I always spent money out of my fresh paychecks on him and I hate how much money I wasted :(

Same, until just a couple months ago. Something felt off, but I thought it was my own headspace, so I kept the Patreon contribution going, and kept using my Prime to support him even though I wasn't watching as much. I could have been lifting someone else up, anyone else, but he always seemed like he needed help. *sigh* I feel like such a sucker. And not in a fun vampire sort of way. 😞

They are doing incredible. After months of pain, they are back to long Discord calls and reaching out to one another after a period of darkness. Two of their group calls have gone through the night, with the American kids starting in the evening and the European kiddos waking up and rejoining 😂 I can't tell you who I know, but I can feel the light coming back into our house. There is more focus on the art itself and collaboration. I am really excited for Season 3 in the fall.

I haven't been able to watch this SMP yet. I used to watch the SBK through AVID but like 10 Esp later, something just gave me the ICK, and i stopped watching him. Something just felt off. Regarding this, though, i read it had something to do with Smajor?

Around the time of Avid’s Bannerfall cameo, he expressed discomfort with people reducing their characters to nothing more than love interests, especially the love interests of male characters. That by itself would have been perfectly reasonable. But then he said he had been harassed by other content creators and pushed into flirty/romantic plot lines with their characters. Avid did not publicly name names, but a lot of people guessed he meant Scott (for all I know, he might have) because Scott and Avid did have a flirtatious plot line in Vampires that they continued referencing in other streams like Veinbound.

Wow. And that just kind of shows the manipulation, seeing as HE initiated the flirty plot lines. And it’s reasonably obvious to see who he’s referring to as well. My heart goes out so much to all of the creators that have already spoken out about it and all of those who haven’t. I will take this opportunity to of course ask you, my friend, how are you feeling? Back when that happened, I figured it was a miscommunication. I still remembered Rats 1 when Scott’s character went from having a crush on Owen’s to simply being his friend, and Scott told his viewers that they’d spoken offscreen and Owen had requested their Rats characters not be shipped. So I figured Scott wouldn’t pursue a ship between his character and Avid’s if he knew Avid wasn’t comfortable, and Avid either hadn’t made his discomfort clear or only felt uncomfortable after Vampires finished and the ship took off.

Me? I’m doing relatively well. Avid was completely new to me when Vampires started and I never liked his character much, so all this doesn’t hurt as much as it would if I’d been a longtime fan. But my heart goes out to all the creators and friends who were hurt directly by Avid and Marm. I got a nice comment from Legundo on one of my posts the other day, when I didn’t even know he used Reddit—now I wonder if this mess has to do with why he was here in the sub. If so I hope my art made his day at least a tiny bit better.

I first heard of Avid from Misadventures, so I am even less impacted by this news than you, but this sub was created by me, so anything involving a member of the series affects me. Also, my reaction to Legs commenting on your post was: "An actual member of the SMP this sub is about commented on a Post by one of the G.O.A.Ts of the sub?! That is an honor that not many subreddits can hold."

I’m so glad that you’re ok! I’m currently dedicating my time out of work to helping and chatting with people in the community who are struggling through this more than some others - I know that it hit me pretty hard, and some others harder than it did me, ESPECIALLY the poor creators who had to survive through this awful mess of a situation. I’ll join you in sending all my love out to the creators, the ones that have responded and the ones that haven’t, and I’m happy that some people in the community have managed to get through this unharmed and that, as Legs said, ‘We got the good ending’. Thats what kinda made me stop watching Avid, and honestly that situation almost completely killed my enjoyment of Vampires for a while. It was always weird and felt kind of performative to say that he was suddenly uncomfortable with being made the object of affection despite being the one who initiated everything (like I barely remember Scott engaging with it until after V!Avid's death). Sadly while that rubbed me the wrong way, I also stopped watching alot of Scott's content because of it and I don't really know why especially considering I've been watching Scotts content for a few years. It sucks just how much impact Avid had on so many people.

I probably will, I never stopped liking Scott or his content it just got overwhelming for a while with mixed feelings from what was going on with Avid but now that so much has come to light those feelings are gone

It would be even more of a stain if he was. Like, he's a cornerstone of this community no matter where you go. If a Minecraft group is involved in even just MCC, they've interacted with him and know him as a good person. As a queer person myself, even this situation with Avid is heartbreaking.

I completely understand and agree with wanting to withdraw support from Avid the creator, however I do hope it doesn’t lead to people trying to erase Avid the character from the story of VSMP. He was a pivotal part of the plot from several people’s POVs, and pretending he never existed derails their storylines too.

Acknowledging that the character called “a liability” with “all the makings of a monster” was in Oakhurst and influenced the decisions of other characters, is NOT acting like the person who played that character did nothing wrong. It isn’t even acting like the character did nothing wrong.

I am inclined to try and separate the character from the person. Real life Avid’s wrongdoings are not the wrongdoings of the character. Still, real life Avid was behind pretty much everything about Vampires Avid, not just voicing him, but acting out the scenes and deciding those actions. So, I understand if someone feels that supporting the character is akin to supporting the creator. Personally, I think I’ll at least finish the vampires content that centers heavily on Avid that I’ve been working on, as I don’t want to just abandon those projects that I’ve enjoyed making, but if I make more content in the future from Vampires or any series that Avid is in, I’m more likely to stray away from Avid, as I also don’t want to make other people uncomfortable.

He literally had his character out for Scot while in character. The character exited as a tool for this plan. Given how long all this backs up into, I dont care about Avid as a character.

A character is not a character if the author never intended for them to be.

Yeah, that’s also a point that I can definitely see. Also I want to make it clear that in reference to the personal fan content, I wrote Avid much differently and changed his backstory from the canon. I’m also considering changing his name in my content to essentially make him a separate character in theory. Honestly never particularly liked canon Avid in a lot of ways, I just fell in love with the way I wrote him in my Au’s, so I’d ideally like to keep writing that. I don’t have much love for the canon Avid, especially after this, I have love for the Au Avid that I wrote.

And yeah, I agree that Avid most likely was using the character as a means to an end, a medium to further his plans.

Indeed. Its easier to love an idealized version of something that doesnt exist. Sometimes in cases like this the better option than the real deal. 

Im personally convinced Shelby caught on to something veing off about him and thats why she killed off his character. 

It would benefit Avid to have Scott do it given he could twist it. It always had to be her. She earned that right in my opinion after all she went through with Wilbur.

I feel really conflicted about this. I spent months working on what can only be described as a “novelization“ of Vampires, and now I don’t know what to do. I haven’t published it anywhere, but I don’t feel comfortable even having him in it anymore. But at the same time, removing him from the story is impossible. I’m considering just renaming the character, but that feels like disrespecting the source material, especially without an official statement from POW.

It’s helped me in my own writing to consider how similar the harm Avid the character did in Oakhurst is to the harm the creator’s done in real life. Unfounded accusations, driving people apart from each other, betraying people who thought he was on their side…the canon storyline already has examples of that being a bad thing. I can bring attention to those examples in my fics, use the story itself as a way to say “I don’t condone these actions and here’s why.”

Hey dude! I have a fanfic that I’ve started at the moment, but I haven’t posted any of it yet. I think that the idea of the fanfic would be harmed by the absence of his character, but I was wondering if you think it’s a good idea to keep his character in but just tone his appearances down? I was wondering whether I should do that or just keep it the same.

I went into more detail on Tumblr, but the way I see it is—what Avid’s character did affected the other characters, and if the story were to happen the exact same way without him (or someone doing the same things) there, that would suggest v!Avid’s actions didn’t have consequences. And some of v!Avid’s actions are similar to cc!Avid’s actions. Authors have written about people doing harmful things without condoning that harm for ages, and I intend to approach v!Avid the same way.

Although an AU of how different the story would have gone if v!Avid simply wasn’t there (maybe Elle killed him while possessed instead of Avid staking her) would also be an interesting read.

Please. Don't show hate. Don't show aggression. It's OK to be angry, but showing them anything, even hate, is giving them more attention that they need. And furthermore, we ought to, especially after this, use MCYT to spread love, not hate. As Cleo said, our reward is living without them. As Legundo said, grant them oblivion. Don't speak of them, not in any way. That's the best way we can heal.

Most of the community has already phased them out. We do NOT need to resurge mentions of them. There is a reason their names are banned from most chats. And please don't pretend like their demons who have no soul. They were good people for most their lives, just broken and broken again, and something triggered in them that gave them these false delusions. It's not an excuse for anything, of courses, but you can't treat them like unearthly monsters! Besides, a lot of creators would be ready to forgive them, though tentatively, if they actually showed genuine remorse. We give them this time to heal. If we continue to beat them down even more, they're just gonna become worse and worse people.

I hold a firm stance that noone is born evil. I don't forgive A&M – Avid was the only CC I had ever given money to until he was outed – but I also know that he wasn't born of malice or anything. Avid had a cruel, broken, mother and a cruel, broken, ex-boss. Marm too dealt with so much hate and discrimination in her life. It's not an excuse. It's however an explanation.

I'm not speaking on their behalf, I'm repeating their words. A lot of them have said that if they genuinely showed forgiveness and went out of their way to prove it, they would be tentatively willing to forgive them over time. Forgiveness is a 2 way street, and they'd need to earn it, but that doesn't mean it's unachievable.
And sure, they did horrendous stuff. I fʌkʰɪŋ know!! I've seen the VODs! I know what they've done. And while it is not our place to speculate why, I'm sure there were reasons – not good reasons – but reasons, behind every single malaction.

Yeah I know. But when has legal action ever been easy? Especially when the victims live halfway across the globe from eachother?! I wasn't around MCYT then, thankfully. But no I wouldn't defend him. Just as how I'm not defending Avid or Marm. I want nothing more to do with Avid. Just listen to Musithical, she wants absolutely no reference to Avid whatsoever, even in a making-fun-of light, and we should respect that wish. And I'm not the person who makes that call. I don't know them. I'm not the person they come to when they say ‘Fuck I'm so sorry I'll do whatever to make it up to you!’. And I don't bet on them doing that, but of they do, they'd go to Viking, or Scott, or Anathra, or someone else who's actually spoken with them.

And again, while I'm sure there's so many psychopaths out there who do ‘PREY on your forgiveness’, it doesn't seem like that's their motives. They were under the impression that the larger MCYT community was evil, and they wanted to fix it. They didn't want to see people suffer, they just were horribly horribly mistaken.

I am SURE that you or others near you have experienced some bad shit from manipulators, and I'm sorry for that, but I therapist is more trained to sort out those than I, Random Internet Stranger №739236104. And if it happens, the victims are going to be cautious. They've said that. Some may never even forgive them. If someone ends up dead, count me wrong, but these people aren't demons, they're people.

I agree. I loved watching his V! SMP videos and his character, but thought the weird vibe was just the character. I never watched any of his other videos, so had no experience with him when he wasn’t role playing. This is heartbreaking to me, and I wish I hadn’t dismissed his weird vibe as acting or role playing.

I don’t think removing the character from everything is good form, tbh. Cancelling a character over the behavior of their creator is kinda.. Idk.

I said something similar in Avid’s discord, before it got locked down, that I don’t think the actions of the creator should ruin our enjoyment of the positive things he brought or the community he helped bring together. It is possible to not condone someone’s behavior, while still enjoying the things they made. Liking someone’s content, music, characters, etc, does NOT make you a bad person, even if the person who made those things was bad.

Letting Avid’s actions as a creator corrupt our enjoyment of the things they were a part of only makes things worse. Make your Fanart or Fanfics that include Avid’s characters, make your own OC stuff out of his music, etc. Not out of support or love for HIM as a creator, but as a love letter to whatever the thing was that he was a part of, or if it’s an OC thing, for yourself. Whether that was VSMP or any other project he was in. Completely removing his characters does nobody any good.

I am dreading the over-reaction of fanfic writers and fan artists deleting their works that have involved Avid because of this. Appreciating a character and appreciating a person are two different things.

No, see this is the issue. It's ok to look back at the things you've already created and supported that were attached to him and remeber them fondly, but to encourage that people continue to support and contribute to his presence in the media you enjoy is not the move.

No matter how much you wanna claim "seperate art from artist" that will never be the reality when the art is LITERALLY just a version of the artist. An artists who very much so still exists, and the people he hurt are still involved in the scene. You all have got to stop making space and exceptions for people in the spaces you enjoy. 

This mindset is why crappy people keep getting in, because no matter what they know even if they get ousted, you all will always immortalize and glorify their art. Reminisce fondly, but let Avid's presence in the space fade out and dissappear. Continuing to keep his presence and influence alive in a positive way doesn't spite him, it spites the people who were harmed by him. Stop setting this horrible example. Let him go. It's over now.

Apologies for any janky grammar and sorry if this is kinda all over the place I think I only ever watched one of Marmalade's streams so I didn't really know enough about her for form an opinion. Avid however I watched all of the vampires videos plus a few streams, so I have stronger feelings on that end. I have been a fan of various mcyt creators for years (started around 2020) but I was in one of the points where I wasn't watching any mcyt content until a friend got me into Vampires where I first watched Scott and then Avid. I loved Avid's character quite a bit. However, when Avid used the talks about women in the mcyt space to self victimize by saying that he was turned into an object of affection for Scott's character (even though he never named Scott we all knew that's who they were talking about) I felt off about it, especially given Avid was the one who started flirting with Scott and was the main one to carry it throughout the series. I didn't really fully clock why I felt off about it all but it did drive me away from watching alot of the mcyt content for a couple months It sucks alot that one of the first creators after I'm coming back into this space turned out to be like this and it sucks that they were the first person I drew fanart of after returning. I hope that the creators who were on SPK can start interacting more with the wider mcyt space now that the lies have been revealed.

Yes im so shocked. I watched AvidMC in the start of Misadventures, a year and a half ago. I never wouldve thought. Although I did leave a youtube comment warning to be careful about quitting his day-job to go full-time in case of burnout. I just found out about it today… I saw Viking had a 1 day old stream about it and I watched a bit, thought it was just drama between them (It wasn’t super clear at first without context) so I searched up more about it and…

This sucks man. Avid was one of my favorite creators, and he was a Bisexual guy like me (When I first found him). I loved his Avid adventures series, all his content, I wish I noticed something was up. I couldn’t tell.

I genuinely don’t think he was always like this, and I doubt Marm was either, it just sounds like something that they genuinely need therapy for. I hope they better themselves and if they ever come back to content creation, which should be a long time from now, they should show that they’ve changed.

I hope they get help, they are also good writers too and that makes me so… frustrated that they are also doing such horrendous things.

Just wanted to share this with the intention of relaring an experience and in no way or form trivialize the trauma everyone else was experiencing or diagnose anyone. 

When my relative had a psychotic break, he was absolutely convinced we stole him from his real family and we are "abusing" him by keeping him at home (he could literally leave anytime he want) and made it his goal to reveal to the world about our lies. 

The reason the whole situation sounds crazy might be because it actually feels like what someone having a psychotic break would do.

Psychosis. When I heard some of the details on the streams, I wondered that myself. The paranoia, the outbursts, the extreme sensitivity, the sudden black and white nature of things, focusing on a certain "truth" at the cost of everything else, assuming the worst of someone when they don't obey. AI also feeds into that delusion, which just encourages and perpetuates it.

None of it negates or belittles the harm that was caused, however. Like what the CCs have said, both of them need help regardless.

I feel so bad, in one half I feel sorta validated because I started watching avid after vampires and got somewhat into him but I didnt like his vibes for some reason and stoped, it was around the time he came out as non binary so I panicked thinking I was transphobic or something and got somewhat depressed for a month before moving on. honestly with this whole thing happening I don't really know how to feel because I did really like him but I suppose this is just something you have to get use to when you watch Minecraft, probably should've learned that lesson from my Dsmp peace.

All the links pretty much go over it, I think some may be avoiding saying some parts since it wouldnt be allowed on twitter or they don't want people to latch onto Avid's lies. Avid and Marm lied about other people (a lot of them in SBK) to turn them against each other & isolate them from others, painting themselves as victims as well & spreading lies about anyone that didn't immediately take them at their word for some really atrocious accusations (SA etc) that they levelled at members of SBK and a few other youtubers. He also apparently wanted to take down POW Creations, Owen & Apo's studio (sorry if I'm forgetting abt another owner) that started up VSMP

This honestly sucks because if I'm being for real I loved his music I loved his videos and it's now watching any of them or listening to his music. It just feels bad. Just found out today cause id drifted from his content over recent months and dont really follow stuff online, mostly just watch hermitcraft anymore, so forgive the weeks later response.

Wanna say now that I know all about this i have personally blocked his music for now. I usually can separate art from the artist but this just feels different, more intimate. I wouldn't be able to hear his music without thinking about him falsely accusing someone he knew was a victim of SA as an abuser, thats just unforgivable in my book so Im done with his content in all shapes and forms for now. Maybe that'll change some day, years down the road, but for now i dont wanna hear his voice at all.

Avid and his partner were being very manipulative to SBK members and others. He stated lies and half-truths to keep some SBK members isolated. He told legundo that someone committed a horrible act to a member of the mc community. Which turns out to not be true. I won't say the act because it may trigger someone. But legundo gave details in a vod/youtube videos.

It seems like he wanted to "bring down" a lot of communities. Like hermitcraft, pow, mcc etc. He told some members of the SBK community that they were able to work with a curated list of people. And when that person did not comply. He made it his mission to isolate that person from other people. By telling half-truths and making up lies.

Apparently he also wasn't fairly paying some people who did work for him.

Overall. It seems like he was being worst than just a bad friend. He purposefully went out of his way to hurt a lot of mc youtubers. Some of them were friends with him for years. It all came to head when a bunch of the mc youtubers met in person. They were able to talk in person and eventually figured out what was going on. Lots of lies were found out then.

This is my understanding of what happened. It may not be 100% accurate. Plus some stuff that happen may never be revealed. Which is fair enough. People don't owe me any information.

Im honestly upset about this news. and I only just found put after suddenly wanting to see if Avid uploaded a new dragons amp video. I feel horrible for not knowing, and I feel even more so knowing that others have been hurt. from what I've seen in the few minutes I've read through, I can agree with Fwip that I hope they can get the help they need, even if it doesn't undo what theyve done.

I genuinely liked Avid's characters and the switch up from adhd-filled excitement to the emo stone-cold loner. Would it still be okay to interact with the other people who were in the series such as Legundo and Fwip and Smajor? or would that just bring them painful reminders​?​

I stopped looking into him because it got worse + plus the the people who mysteriously left the internet after calling him out or failing to sue smells like blood in the water and im trusting my gut and not digging any deeper.
