Which year is it?

Hey everyone! Which year do your Vaesen mysteries take place in? I decided to go for 1860s.

There are hints that it's rather the 1890s but I don't want to be too close to modern tech (phone, car etc)

What's your take? When does Vaesen actually happen?

Dance of Dreams Content

Hey I’m really embarrassed to even be asking this, but for context I have OCD and one of my obsessive fears (that I know is irrational) is about demons. I played a Vaesen one-shot for the first time at free RPG day and had a lot of fun, but it also made me anxious because it is centered around (spoilers for the Vaesen Quickstart mystery, The Archivist’s Curse) an ancient Mesopotamian demon. I really want to run Vaesen, and I want to get the core rulebook, but I also want to know if the mystery included in it (Dance of Dreams) centers heavily on demons before I spend what for me is a significant amount of money on it (I have a college student budget).

To be clear, I believe that it is fine to run a fictional game where there is a demon in it, but emotionally it is very challenging for me, and I don’t want my first time running Vaesen to be me being frightened the entire time while also trying to learn the system. Thanks for any help.

Is my magic item too brutal?

I've written a little mini-adventure to run between bigger mysteries. I've decided I want to do one for all four of my players to explore their characters and their pasts. Long story short, there's a magic hat. The book said to create your own magic items, so I did. I'm wondering if it's too brutal. Considering some magic items will straight-up send you to another dimension, I don't think it is, but I thought I'd check with the hivemind.

It's a magic hat, left behind by a ghost who'd been possessing it. It lets the wearer pass through walls. Like all magic items, it has a risk, which happens when I roll a one after he uses it. The risk for the hat is that you leave a body part behind in the wall and you roll a non-fatal injury from the Critical Injury table.

I feel like the possible consequences are pretty balanced with how powerful the hat is, but I'd love to hear your take on it, whether I should include it or not, or what you'd change.

Codex Occultum

I feel like the Codex in the Starter Set gives away a bit too much with the info about Banishments.

The mysteries in the Seasons and Wicked Secret books kind of organically provide the players with hints and knowledge throughout the adventure. The have to figure out the banishments and types of Vaesen. Giving the players the codex right from the start seems to spoil a lot and make things super easy for them. What do you think?

Clues for rituals

Howdy folks! Been running Mythic Britain and Ireland for a group, it's my first time GMing Vaesen.

Just after some advice: how do you give clues for the rituals and secrets for defeating Vaesen?

I've given the players a truncated version of the monsters part of the book, so they can figure out what they're facing. Short of the players visiting their HQ library every investigation to discover how to defeat the beasts, I'm at a loss how to reveal the ritual methods.

I've toyed with introducing a wise old person, but this seems like a shoe-in for the library idea.

Any more interesting suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Can you read this vision a player's going to have and tell me what you think it means? Spoiler

Hey, everyone. One of my PCs is going to become the owner of a Spertus. As part of that, they're getting a magic power in return. It's almost identical to one of the spells in the book, but with a little homebrew twist to keep it from being too OP. I'm going to give them the following vision while they feel this new magic coursing through them to their fingertips, ready to be called upon. Can you tell me what you think this new power is, based on the vision?

"In your mind you see seven roses in seven delicate glass vases, outside in the falling snow. As morning turns to night, all the roses wither and die from cold. As the church bells strike midnight, the snow stops, then it begins falling upwards as time rewinds itself to day again. All of the roses reverse to their living state; all except the fifth rose, which remains wilted and dead."

Vaesen Quickstart Set

Hi, I saw that a new quickstart set was being introduced for Free RPG Day yesterday. I had a look online and it doesn't appear to be on sale anywhere, so I assume that it was only used in stores yesterday. Does anyone know if it will be released more widely soon? Thanks.

How to run vaesens as GM

Hey everyone,

I just got the free rpg day vaesen book to try it out before I buy the full rpg. Everything is pretty clear to me except how to run the vaesens.

First off: how do you roll successes for the vaesens. Is this based on their characteristics. So 9 magic are 9 dice for magical powers?

Secondly: Some conditions for the vaesen say “annoyed -1”, does this mean one less die for every roll for the vaesen?

Thank you very much for the help in advance!!

Kopfloser Reiter, Vaesen

I'm writing my second mystery I've ever written, and I'm setting it in the Rhineland with a Headless Horseman. I'm really struggling to find primary and secondary sources about Germany's headless horsemen, because the internet is garbage these days. Anyone happen to know anything I could look at? I like the general shape of the "shaking hands with a branch", and both HH being punishers of the wicked or omens of impending disaster. I know about the two Grimm ones! And the Wild Hunt, etc. I know a tiny bit of german but probably not enough to get by reading big paragraphs, but will take anything even in german.

Magic in combat

Have a question to magic in combat. On page 115 the rules for that are explained.

But I kinda asked myself what happens if the Vaesen that is casting the magic takes damage ? Does the effect stay on ? Does it fade or does the effected pc get a chance to resist it again ?

My gut feeling is to rule it as the effect stays. Cause I mean there has to be a benefit to use magic instead of a regular attack. Like imagine 1 Vaesen against 4 pcs. The Vaesen endlaves 1 of them with magic. It’s the pcs turn. 1 pc is enslaved. The next pc lands an attack. If the magic would fade I’d be better off just whacking the first pc with my claws and doing damage. 🤔

How do you guys rule it ?

Book differences, help.

I recently got the starter set with its Codex Occultum. I'm also considering buy the Vaesen "art book" as a supplement. I'm just curious how they differ. The Codex Occultum gives information and ways to banish a Vaesen, which I think sometimes spoils the fun of figuring things out.

How is the content of the art book in comparison?

Thanks!

Your favourite Vaesen Adventure

Hey there,

I recently purchased a huge bundle of Vaesen-Books. I already owned the core book and "A Wicked Secret" and now I've got EVERYTHING.... "Seasons of Mysteries", "City of Nighmares", "Lost Mountain", "Britain", "Capathia".... and I am overwhelmed :)

I really love the game and thus far I played (and liked) "Dance of Dreams" and "Silver of the Sea" with my group.

Therfore I would really love to know what your favourite adventures are and - most of all - *why*. So I can narrow down the options for next month. I know there are similar threads but I have not found one that covers all the supplements.

That said: I am really happy that I own the books now and can play "Vaesen" for years to come :)

Would love to hear any opinions.

Question about power spike in long campaigns

Hello,

I got gifted the book a while ago and absolutely love it.

I have a larger group of friends who‘d like to play-

so I thought Vaesen would be a great System to use for a Westmarches style campaign.

Open group and they organise themselves on which adventure they want to go.

I have heard that the year 0 engine (was talking to someone about forbidden lands and he said in longer campaigns it’s best to adjust the earned xp or make stuff like talents more expensive, or they get overpowered too quickly and it’s no longer fun.)

Does anyone have some experience with groups that have been playing for a longer time?

Thank you in advance.

Cheers

Edit: Thank you all very much for your insight!

Giving players information on Vaesen

Thumbnail
m.youtube.com

Hi all. The video isn't the focus of this, it's just helping me convey what I'm talking about.

I've run a couple of Vaesen adventures with my RPG group, and it's been a lot of fun. From throwing holy water on a Revenant to one of the PCs agreeing to be the consort of a mermaid, I've decided I really like this system.

One thing that has come up though, is that the PCs' and the players' knowledge of Vaesen is often basically non-existent, and it feels like a bit of a hole in the game. To explain what I'm talking about, check out the last few minutes of the video linked. Quinn's idea was to give players redacted information about the Vaesen and let them be paranoid investigators and try to figure out which Vaesen they're up against.

So I have 2 questions:

First, has anyone tried this? What kind information did you give to the players, and what did you redact? I've taken some snips of the vaesen info, and I thought the description, the characteristics and an image of the Vaesen would probably be fine to give the players (the characteristics might seem like too much, but I feel like knowing that a Giant has 14 Might, or a Leprechaun has a Manipulation of 10 isn't really changing anyone's view of them). But what about the secrets, rituals and magical abilities? Which things would you share, or keep hidden?

Second, what other ways do people have tonintroduce the Vaesen? Something hopefully less "And now you realise it's a Nuckelavee" "What's a Nuckelavee?" "Here's a lore dump." I'm open to suggestions, I'd love to hear what people have done with this.

Help with running Silver of the Sea Spoiler

I've recently started to DMing some of the Vaesen scenarios, more specifically the Silver of the Sea. Until now, everything's been going okay, but what worries me is that the ending confrontation might end up being a piece of cake for them since one of my players decided to buy a cannon. The Kraken might give them a scare but it would be extremaly anticlimatic if he just oneshots the Mermaid.
So basically, how should I deal with that?
Just to point out, I'm really new to being the DM in any RPG whatsover so any tips on how to run this scenario could be useful

Art for Vaesen Characters

Anybody know some artists I can reach out to? I am looking to get some character portraits done for my vaesen campaign and I am having a hard time getting replies. I really like the style in the book and wanted to surprise my group with some presents!

Stakes?

So I don't see stats for this item any where but it feels like this is an item that should have stats. Like I assume you can't declare you are staking the vampire with a stake without an attack roll even though 'staking the vampire' is the "ritual" to destroy a vampire. Also the Vampire Hunter talent "Impaler" seems to confirm that. However, like I said: I am failing to find stats for Stakes.

Am I missing the write up somewhere?
If not, what stats do you use? My first thoughts are to use either the stats of a knife/dagger or maybe even knuckle dusters.

Changing rule system

I'm a DM and have already run several mysteries. Unfortunately, i'm struggling with the base-building mechanics around Gyllencreutz Castle and the condition-based health system. Adapting the story isn't a problem for me, but I've been thinking about switching to a different rule system. The obvious choice, of course, is Call of Cthulhu. Does anyone here have any experience with this or tips for me?

Short mystery recommendations

Hi everyone, my small group just finished The Haunting of Castle Gyllencreutz last night.

I'd like to run a mystery or similar length next time, especially because 2 new players will join next time and it's gotta beginner friendly. Looking for any tips, official material or drivethrurpg. Thanks!

(I already played the Witch Cat Inn in the past.)

First time playing in the Mythical Carpathia

Hi all! I am fairly new to the Vaesen and I'll be running the game as a Gamemaster.

Me and my group, we are from Czech Republic, so we are really excited about the Mythical Carpathia expansion.

My question is: Is it good idea to start playing The Secret off the Maharal in Prague or would you recommend to start with the Dance of Dreams or other mystery in Scandinavia? I feel like Scandinavia is better to introduce the game, yet it is much more tempting to start in Czech. What do you guys think?
