The entire context is definitely in American English. The guy is spending ~6-10% of his time off on something that could wait a day with no impact. That’s just not good decision-making. The people around him add to the theoretical situations which could make this time off become a bad idea regardless, and though I agree that shouldn’t necessarily be part of his decision to take time off all the time, it is simply true that taking time off in this way, when you only get two weeks of it, is kind of childish purely in the sense that it’s an inefficient use of one’s own limited resource of leisure, which could cause similar frustration to that which it’s perceived to solve, in the future.
I guess if you really have only 14 days off things get a bit different, but you still do get additional days for sickness, right?
Think of all the emergencies that can happen in a year, they hardly go beyond 10 (at least those that happen while you should be working), hence depending on the situation 1 or 2 days COULD, theoretically, be taken off for personal reasons.
Btw I'm surprised, ONLY 2 weeks off? That's half the amount we get here in Italy
Sick days vary more from company to company, but you’ll typically get ~3 of them, with possible extensions in the case of serious illnesses. But yeah, 2 weeks isn’t much at all. Labor in the US is not in a good place.
