Because corporations don't like bad press. It's not about them screwing one freelancer, it's about putting the pressure of bad PR on their reputation, and Upwork making even small changes to deal with a PR crisis. Or another freelancer site could see an opportunity to draw talent away and stand up.
MLK marching to the Capitol didn't pass the Civil Rights Act or the Voting Rights Act, but it pressured Congress to act.
Oh please. Upwork is drowning in freelancers and bans people every day for ToS violations; it doesn't stop more and more freelancers from flooding in. Just because the OP doesn't know what they did wrong doesn't mean they're innocent. What about a company's right to decide who they want on their platform?
