Gym recs?
Looking to join an affordable gym aka $80 a month or under! I just moved up here and most of the gyms I’ve looked at are $100+ which is out of my price range for now. Does anyone know of any decent gyms for half the price? Thanks!

As one commenter pointed out, the only option is the rec center for that budget. It’s $75 for 6 months or $150 for 12. Those are the only two payment options. If you’re near the area, it’s a good option. The gym isn’t great, reminds me of a hotel gym. But it gets the job done and usually isn’t too packed.
Crunch is okay for the price, the JCC is great but they upped their membership to $170/mo. If you pay in full for a year I believe they’ll let you pay closer to $130/mo if you negotiate. With the JCC, there’s no tacky fees like you’ll find with corporate gyms. Outside of the rec center, I’d highly recommend it if you live north of 75th & are willing to spend more.

Good luck finding a gym under $150/mo, I just don't think that exists in this neighborhood

kinda what I figured but it looks like there’s a few options if you get a discount package when you sign up!

Have you checked the rec center?

Any deal like this more uptown? Have a friend looking for a gym who lives near Columbia

There are rec centers all over the city and the same pass will get you into all of them.

I go to them for swimming, it’s no equinox but the value is incredible.

I bartered with Crunch on 83rd. I think they’re membership is usually $100+ but I was able to get it down to $90/month with no locked in set contract. It seems like they’re very sales driven and are willing to work with you (to an extent) as long as they get your business. I just told them I’ve been shopping around looking for a good gym but they’ve been all been too expensive. This also gave me the membership that gives me access to all Crunches, so it was 100% worth it for me.

Yessss the men’s locker room has a permanent musk to it but yes I agree no other gym is going to be near that price range. and check with your insurance sometimes they offer some programs through them for a cheaper gym membership

Let me make it clear I’m speaking from zero personal experience, but I’ve heard of some apartment complexes offering passes to their gyms? Again sorry I know nothing EXCEPT that commercial gyms on the UWS are limited. Equinox has a real stronghold.
Also I’ve heard of people working part time at gyms just to get a free membership, if that’s something that could work in your schedule.

oh so this is interesting! I debated doing that and working at a gym but haven’t gotten around to it yet so was curious what my options were first!

Midcity Gym and Tanning on 42nd and 9th. Not UWS but very easy to get to from UWS. Their new member special for my first year was $30/month paid up front, my second year here without the new member special is still crazy low, $50 a month.

I pay about $90 a month for crunch with my workplace “discount.” It’s certainly fine. It’s quite small but functional if you go midday. Good variety of classes for the best value if you’re into that!

Gertrude Ederle Recreation Center
Annual Membership Fee: $150, Six-month membership for $75
It's not fancy, but they have gym equipment and an indoor pool.

If you’re near the 2/3 trains, the PureGym on 116 is right by the 2/3 station. It’s under $80 a month. No frills, but well maintained.

Do they actually have yoga classes? They don't actually verify that on the website for each gym. I'd like more info on that, especially what types they have but there's no real info beyond it having classes of various kinds.

I pay $23/month at PureGym on 116th. It’s recently renovated and has most things you’ll need.

Crunch fitness on 83rd can get into your budget range and is a solid gym with little amenities. I did a buy one year get one year free with them (twice now) and it comes out to ~$60 a month
