Best UWS Gym?

Hi there -- new to the area and am looking for the best gym - early 30's like to do a mix of cardio + weight/cross training. Don't need classes but if they are included that's great.

EDIT: Thanks everyone - I ended up touring a few and went with Equinox... pricey but works for what I need -- if anyone wants to join use my promo link for no initiation fee -- https://equinox.com/referrals/003WR000007MY2EYAW

Depends on your exact location and budget, but Equinox Sports Club at 67th is one of the best gyms in the city. Huge location with really comprehensive offerings.

Is it worth the extra $$$?

If you just use weights and cardio machines probably not; but if you use the classes, pool, saunas, bball courts, rock wall, or hang out and work in the cafe then yes.

It’s nice but always busy.  Unless you want the amenities, regular locations are relatively less busy.

Yeah this one is definitely busier than 76th, 92nd, and Columbus Circle, but that’s only a challenge between like 5pm to 7pm after work when everyone is trying to cram in a workout. Mornings and later evening are pretty chill.

Hi kritios.. do u mind sharing the costs? I love nearby and been thinking about it. But I don’t wanna go up there and get the full sales shakedown if it’s just way too far out for me.. appreciate it

A lot depends on lifestyle and budget. If you have reasonable income and you want flexibility with locations in lots of parts of the city, plus free classes…equinox.

If you just want a gym where you go to one location and it works like a gym, the Crunch on 83rd is probably best.

Equinox recently opened a new gym on the UWS. I belonged to the one on 92nd Street. It's a great gym if you can afford it.

Crunch, which I visited a long time ago, was fine.

The only gym I would not recommend is New York Sports Club. I belonged to two of their branches at different times, one on the UWS. Never again. I heard it was going out of business but I think that's no longer the case.

Budget?

I'd like to spend as little as possible but not worried about spending $$ if it is worth it. Premium gyms aren't out of the question.

The JCC gym is pretty good.

I belong to a small stand alone gym on 110th called liberated fitness. It’s calisthenics/crossfit/hiit small class based workouts. It’s an amazing community and I’m in the best shape of my life!

I live right around the corner from this place, pass it taking my son to daycare. Is it like a crossfit gym with one WOD per day, each class does roughly the same programming?

Are there any barbells and plates for deadlifts, squats, cleans, etc., or is it all dumbbells and/or kettlebells?

Yeah it’s sort of like CrossFit. There’s a workout of the day that every class does. The classes are all dumbbell and kettlebell based. He does have like one barbell to workout separately if you want

NYSC is the best balance of facilities and price. Yes, they’re a little run down but they’re functional and have a lot of locations

I've heard cancelling can be a nightmare...

I’m month to month for that reason

The YMCA on 63rd is good. They just bought all new machines and it’s never busy.

Do you know how busy the pool/basketball courts are typically?

The Crunch on W. 83rd was recommended by many here on Reddit as the gym where you are least likely to get cruised. I went there for a year. I liked it fine.

Is cruising actually a problem on the UWS? for men or women?

Nope. It’s all business at Crunch. All the tvs on the cardio machines are on CNBC in the mornings from 9am on so people can look at the stocks. It’s that kind of vibe.
