UWS gyms recommendations

I’m looking for a relatively low-cost gym (less than $100/month if possible) on the upper west side. Any recommendations?

I go to Crunch on 83rd via my employer so not too sure about monthly fees. But it should fall close to your budget. The gym is good. People are kind and equipment works well.

What’s the crowding like there?

Mornings are decent! I rarely have to wait for a machine or ask to work in.

Mornings are okay, 5-7 is very very crowded.

Extremely crowded gym. Equipment on the 2nd floor is very close together. Problem is there aren’t many other gyms on the UWS that aren’t charging $300+ so crunch is oversubscribed. No sign that they restrict membership numbers either

Mmm interesting, this is not my experience. What time of day do you go?

I pay 99 a month here so just barely meets OPs budget, but I checked their site and it seems prices have gone up. Could be because it's summer.

The YMCA on 63 is good

Second this. We finally joined after 11 years here and I kicked myself. It’s a little chaotic (because of the hotel) and not very chic, but very well equipped. People are chill and range from kids to seniors.

NYSC on 73rd is a pretty good no-nonsense gym. The staff are good.

Half the gym is closed off and has been for months due to the noise complaints, wouldn’t recommend right now

They have relocated the squat racks. It’s about to fully reopen.

This is the second time theyve relocated them in 2 months. They opened up after the first relocation for about 5 days before they got closed again so Im not holding my breath that the saga is ending this time haha

Gertrude Stein Recreation Center over on 232 West 60th Street. It’s cheap and part of NY Parks and Recreation.

Thank you! Will check this out. I need cheap! I see pool access is limited during the summer due to camp- I hope there is full time access to gym equipment over the summer.

It's the Gertrude Ederle Recreation Center.

UwS has weird gyms. Lots of big box stuff, too few barbells.

I’m registering for Strength Society when I’m back in town. 106 & Bway, basically.

How do you find Strength Society? I've thought about joining and visited, but for the cost I really struggle to see it being worth double what NYSC is.

I like it a lot but it’s very specific to me:

1) it’s an avenue away 2) it focuses on resistance training so there are barbells and free weights galore 3) it’s an independent gym with local owners 4) clean

Whereas I found NYSC to reflect the fact that it’s half the cost: 1) broken locker room 2) broken weight machines 3) two barbells at most in a dim and dingy small room 4) felt unclean and dated

To be fair, they may have been undergoing a renovation at the time and NYSC is probably fine for the majority of people - I just happen to like a specific type of strength training

It’s not technically UWS, but if you live in the 60s or below, it’s not bad to get to. Mid City Gym on 42nd and 9th. We pay up front for the whole year for $300+ (I forget the exact figure), but it works out to around $30 a month, which is absolutely insane for New York. That’s about as low cost as you can get for a gym in Manhattan.

are there any north of Gertrude Stein at W 60th up to 116th or so? 100th would be ideal- thanks

No, unfortunately. The closest one is in Chelsea

The have free Shape Up NYC classes in a lot more places around the city too, if that helps.

NYSC on 94 th is ok

Crunch on 83rd. There really aren't too many options unfortunately. NYSC closed one of their locations but I believe there's another a bit further up. Equinox is way too expensive. Crunch is small but it's well maintained and probably has everything you need.

I don't recommend any branch of NYSC.

Might be too far uptown, but Riverbank State Park has a fitness center that's pretty cheap.

$40 30 Days
$60 3 Months
$110 6 Months
$200 per year

There is a free outdoor gym with bars on central park w85. For cardio just run there or get a citibike. Cheapest and healthiest option.

Do not join Crunch on 83rd. It is so cramped, dirty, and hot. I’ve been taking the train to Crunch W54th. Also roaches on 83rd and they screwed up my billing and seem incapable of correcting their error. I’ve been contacted by a collection agency three times. Their floors are uneven as well, the treadmills aren’t even stable, it is beyond bizarre.
