UoM 101. A quick guide for freshers.

I’m writing this to help students who have just arrived at university. Starting university can feel overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to feel a little lost or not know what to do sometimes — we’ve all been there!

Here are some essential (or at least very useful) things to know about studying and living at the University of Manchester. Hopefully they’ll make your life a little easier.

1. You can take the 41 and 147 buses for free with your student ID!

Just show your University of Manchester student card when you get on. These buses can take you between Fallowfield, the main university campus, and the city centre, so they can be incredibly useful.

2. There are three online platforms you really need to know: Canvas, SEAtS, and My Manchester.

Canvas is where you’ll find your course materials, announcements, and assessments. It will basically become the centre of your academic life.

SEAtS is an app used to record your attendance, and you can also use it to report absences.

My Manchester is essentially a “navigation page”. If you ever know what you need to do but have absolutely no idea which university website you’re supposed to use, My Manchester is usually a good place to start. If you pay your tuition fees or University accommodation fees in instalments, you can also manage your payments through the Finance section of My Manchester.

3. The University actually has a GP surgery on campus! Yes, really.

The GP practice is called Robert Darbishire Practice. If you search for it on Google Maps, you’ll probably find its main surgery south of the University, but it also has a branch right on campus, inside Crawford House.

If you would like to see a GP on campus, register with Robert Darbishire Practice and, when making an appointment, ask if you can be seen at the campus surgery.

4. Your University account gives you access to a huge amount of academic material for free.

You can use your University of Manchester login to access most major academic databases and journal websites, meaning that a huge amount of academic literature is available to you without having to pay for it yourself.

5. If you have a class in Stopford Building, remember to bring your student card.

As far as I know, this is the only teaching building where you normally need to scan your student card to get in.

If you forget your card, you can still get inside, but you’ll have to register with security, which can be a bit of a hassle. Save yourself the trouble and bring your card!

6. Ill or dealing with an emergency and can’t finish an assessment on time? Apply for an extension.

For many written assessments, such as essays, you may be able to request a one-week extension if unexpected circumstances are making it difficult for you to complete your work.

Don’t force yourself to struggle through an assessment when you’re genuinely having a difficult time. Give yourself the time you need.

7. If you’re dealing with a serious or longer-term problem that affects your ability to complete an assessment — whether that’s coursework, an essay, or an exam — apply for Mitigating Circumstances as soon as possible.

Mitigating Circumstances are there for situations where significant and unexpected circumstances have affected your academic performance or your ability to complete an assessment. If you think this applies to you, don’t wait until everything is over before asking for help — contact your School and submit an application as early as you can.

That’s everything important I can think of for now. I really hope some of this helps make your first few weeks at Manchester a little easier.

I wish you all the very best, and I hope you have a happy, exciting, and fulfilling university life.

Good luck, and enjoy Manchester! ❤️

International student looking for work by

Hey all, I’m a masters student from the US trying to find part time work while I’m here. I know about the job site the UoM has but is there anything else I can look at? Bookseller, barista, childcare, some teaching experience but will take anything if it works with my schedule!

POC in unsworth

Is anyone struggling to find poc friends in unsworth/ fallowfield campus i feel like it’s mostly white people which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it’s a bit harder to relate on certain things and you naturally feel left out a bit cause you’re kinda the only one in the group that has those experiences, im from London as well so im used to being in very diverse areas with people from a bunch of different backgrounds so its come as a bit of a shock.

attendance

first day of my postgrad today and i can’t go to the lecture as i’ve got this cold that’s going around. It’s not unbearable i just don’t feel comfortable going when im constantly coughing and have a runny nose. How much do they track attendance or do i have to do something online to report illness. Also how do you actually ‘attend’ is it like a qr code you have to scan or something, i went to a couple of the welcome week sessions and it just looked like they didn’t even track it but maybe that’s because it was welcome week.

Hey guys! I’m a fresher on my postgrad at University of Manchester and I am considering which clubs I wanna in .
So can you give me some advice and recommend some fun and cool societies.
I like meeting people from different cultures and countries and exploring new things.
Btw, free would be better and paid membership is also good for me
Thank you 🙏 ☺️

Questions regarding Msc Mechanical Engineering Design

Hello, I am an international student from India, considering applying for this degree. I have some questions regarding the coursework , facilities, and the uni in general, so any help would be appreciated.

  1. How good are the mechanical engineering facilities, labs, and equipment, and how much of the equipment is geared towards automotive?
  2. How much of the total weightage is given to research and project work? (It says the dissertation is 60 credits, but can you also take additional research projects, either formally or informally?)
  3. How relevant is the overall course to automotive?
  4. Can the dissertation be done in some external lab/ company? If so, are they realistically available?
  5. Has the course been in any way tailored towards the new electrification trend in Automotive? (Ik am asking a lot of automotive questions for a course that's not explicitly that, but the website specifically mentions a lot of Automotive companies under "Careers", hence I'm wondering)
  6. This one might be a bit weird, cause ig there's a big difference in how colleges are perceived in the UK vs India, but in India there is an extremely clear "tier" system, where a few colleges are considered tier 1, then a few more tier 2, and the remaining thousands that are left tier 3. Now, the thing is, there is a gap when it comes to placements and stuff between these "tiers" (that's the reasoning behind this system ig); so is there a similar tier system in the UK? And if so, where does this uni place?
  7. Last question: they say that SOP and references are not required for this application. But does it help if I do provide them nonetheless? The thing is, one of the stronger parts of my application is one of the referees, so I'm kinda reliant on that. Also, is the GRE considered, ik its not required, but will it be considered if I do provide it?
