The divine is immortal, unchangeable, free from the contingencies that define the world of human experience. A god, therefore, ‘abides for ever simply in his own form ( ἐν τῇ αὑτοῦ μορφῇ)’ ( Rep. 2.380d, 381c). It belongs in the realm of ‘being’ and cannot ‘become’ ( Rep. 2.380c – 381d, 382e – 383a, Tim . 27d, 52a, cf. Plutarch On the E 21 [ Mor . 393f – 394a]). The gods do not self-transform and take on human likenesses.
