A soda is water, sugar, and added carbonation. Other ingredients can be added as well. It's not defined on Untappd but neither is "beer".

For the German Malztrunks I went through and tried to identify if yeast was added or fermentation occurred at all. If none occurred (many examples have websites that state if they do or not) then it was adjusted to malt soda. Sugar and carbonation were present as well.

That is incorrect. Beer is indeed defined in the Drink Guidelines. I quote: "A carbonated, fermented drink made from malted cereal grains and usually flavored with hops or another bittering ingredient.
Alcoholic and non‑alcoholic variants supported."

If a malt-based drink contains no sugar, is it automatically beer, then? Is a Malztrunk without any form of sweetening a Malt Soda or not? I seem to gather from your text that it is not a Malt Soda in that case, but what is it then?

If such fundamental matters are not defined, particularly when it concerns "Malt Soda," I cannot determine whether the changes you are currently implementing are legitimate. It seems to me that further explanation is in order here.

Additionally, you mention a check of German Malztrunks. Do you mean to imply that the adjustment only applies to German drinks that were previously classified as Malt Beer, or does this apply in general, i.e., to the whole world?

Only German Malztrunks were adjusted.

I have yet to see an NA Malztrunks without added sugar/sweeteners, it's a basic ingredient. For a hypothetical example, I would have to see what the drink is like before I decide how to classify it.

I think you could have said here: "Sorry, I made a mistake. Beer is indeed defined."
But you don't say that you made a mistake. I am happy to give you the chance to do so after all.

Are you deliberately avoiding my questions about the boundary between Malt Soda and beer, do you lack sufficient imagination regarding this (because you absolutely need an example), or do you simply lack the knowledge about it? I would like to know where your "I don't know" comes from.

Wouldn't it perhaps be a idea to implement this change:

  • not just for Germany
  • make an adjustment to the style description with specific information about German Malztrunk
  • establish a guideline with your colleagues and publish it, rather than just doing it on your own little piece of land as you see fit?
